Are there any singers/actors/tv presenters whose continued success you find utterly baffling?

I’m just watching TOTP from 1988 and Kim Wilde’s on.

I’m sure she’s a lovely woman, but fuck me, the lass couldn’t sing. Or dance. Or mime.
And yet, she’s still doing the rounds, all these decades later.

See also Bananarama. Who goes to see these acts?

I’m not sure if it’s me that’s missing something, so which acts leave you confused at their success?

The whole panel of loose women

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/11/2019 11:00

The Beatles were way more than just a 'boy band'.

I don't know if it's been verified one way or the other, but I read that in THAT well-known 'Beatlemania' scene with the half-dozen or so screaming girls on the front row at the gig, where you're supposed to assume they're representative of the whole crowd who are doing the same, the photo has been carefully cropped and those girls are the only ones in the entire place who are screaming and going crazy; and everybody else there is just standing listening calmly to the music like at any concert.

Not helped by him buying his way into the industry and stealing other people's songs.

He did?! I did not know that >> off to Google

Make sure you research it thoroughly - don't back down as if it were merely a petty matter Grin

Dec needs to jettison drunk. Alcoholism is an illness. Drunk driving is a vicious choice. They were always quite annoying but are now an instant 'change channel'.

same for Emma 'it's ok for me to fly' Thompson and all the similar silly sods.

Daniel O'Donnell

Greg Something-or-other from Master Chef

Carol Vorderman - why, just why??

Nestlyn · 14/11/2019 20:19

Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, who on earth decided that they work well together. He's an obnoxious bully and she clearly hates him.

Also, on the breakfast tele theme shouty repetitive Martin Lewis, how has he still got regular work. Yes we know we have to change our energy supplier we've heard it all before like a billion times.

Tartyflette · 14/11/2019 20:38

I saw Amanda Holden in a recent sitcom the other day -- Plebs. I thought she was OK actually.
Sam Smith - Not nearly as good as he thinks he is.( His mum sounds quite interesting, though. )
Ditto Keith Lemon/Leigh Francis.
Steve Wright -- I don't want to listen to you singing, mate. Or talking over the record. You're a deejay, just tell us what the fucking song was.
Jeremy Vine - Just horrible, lowest common denominator phone-in bollocks. Ken Bruce is the only one worth listening to on Radio 2 these days,

dayswithaY · 14/11/2019 20:56

Paloma Faith - awful voice, annoying personality and that car advert! Rita Ora - she's on everything and gets everywhere - how?

RuffleCrow · 14/11/2019 21:10

I also like Rylan, I think he's got character on R2 and he picks some tracks you wouldn't expect. I'm a sucker for an Essex boy though.

Pinkblueberry · 14/11/2019 21:18

Marvin and Rochelle Humes as presenters - especially when together. Decent singers - I don’t mind that - and obviously both very nice looking which is I guess what the producers are thinking when they put them on the tv but I think presenting does require its own kind of skill and talent which they really don’t have! Zero personality or humour when it comes to presenting, they are so boring and awkward to watch.

Pinkblueberry · 14/11/2019 21:23

Also Amanda Holden as presenter/tv judge. I agree with PP she’s a good actress - I kind of scoffed when I saw her on plebs and then had to eat my words as she was pretty good and funny! As I said to DH at the time, she should stick to acting because her real life personality annoying and stupid - literally. So many times on This Morning she’s asked a stupid/ignorant/offensive question to a guest because she obviously didn’t listen to/ couldn’t remember the briefing...

Corneliawildthing · 14/11/2019 21:23

Kylie
Ed Sheeran
Abba, The Beatles - never got the love for either of those bands
Adele
Stormzy and the entire grime thing

katseyes7 · 14/11/2019 21:27

Holly Willoughby. There should be a photo of her in the dictionary next to the word 'vacuous'. She's either ditsy, giggling, or putting on her 'concerned' face, tilting her head like a bemused dog.

Carol Vorderman. Yes, she's got a brain. But we're well into the realms of mutton with more than a whiff of mint sauce these days. l refuse to watch that Heroes of Britain (or whatever it's called) because it just feels like her wanting to be centre stage and get all the attention.

Tess Daly. l don't get her at all. Every time l see her l wonder if Vernon's still in the spare room. And the way she says "judges" is like nails down a blackboard.

Kylie. Perfectly nice woman, l've seen her interviewed and l liked her. But she can't sing. She sounds like a shrill five year old piping away.

Lorraine Kelly. l didn't mind her til that tax malarkey. l've never heard such rubbish in my life. "Playing a person called Lorraine Kelly"!?

katseyes7 · 14/11/2019 21:46

Steve Wright. Well past his sell by date. That "serious jockin' (no G!)" bollocks is abysmal.
Gregggg Wallace. Absolutely appalling man.
Lee Mack. l don't know why, l just can't stand him. l can't even look at him.

katseyes7 · 14/11/2019 21:48

Rylan - Aw l love Rylan. He's funny and genuine. (Apart from the teeth, the fake tan and the hair dye, but l'm willing to let those go).
l quite like Claudia Winkelman. She's funny. Even if she does look like a Goth peering through a hedge.

katseyes7 · 14/11/2019 21:50

l've just remembered Miriam Margolyes from an earlier poster. l adore her. She doesn't care two hoots and she's a very funny, if outrageous raconteur.

SeaWitchly · 14/11/2019 21:56

Keira Shitely.
Dreadful actress who thankfully seems to be off our screens for the time being. ‘‘Twas a time when she seemed to be in everything and ruined what could have been good films if they had hired a competent actress instead.

singymummy · 14/11/2019 22:09

Caroline Flack

Cannot stand the women
She's a god awful presenter

Potnoodledoo · 15/11/2019 05:09

Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson.I cant stand these 3.There was a time they where in every movie ever made. And it was just overkill.

Ritascornershop · 15/11/2019 05:19

Stella Gonet - I used to watch House of Elliott occasionally just to be amazed at how incredibly bad it was, particularly Stella Gonet. The over-acting on her part was breathtakingly bad.

Potnoodledoo · 15/11/2019 05:40

Taylor Swift. She always seems to fall out with people and shes always the victim.

Rockbird · 15/11/2019 06:41

That finished in 1994 @Ritascornershop Grin Give her a break!

RipleysCat · 15/11/2019 07:21

The desperate Caroline Flack, a 40 year old presented to us and acts like, a teenage stunner. Maybe she identifies as an adolescent. I find the whole thing weird. Especially after the Harry Styles romance 🤢

Frenchw1fe · 15/11/2019 07:54

Keira Knightley, thank God it's not just me.
Tess Daly
Lorraine Kelly
Maureen Lipman in Educating Rita
Cilla Black
Amanda Holden
Craig Revell Whorewould
A controversial one I think, Dame Judy is a lovely woman but whenever she's acting I can't get past her being Judy Dench (except as M )whereas Maggie Smith is brilliant and believable.
