Are there any singers/actors/tv presenters whose continued success you find utterly baffling?

I’m just watching TOTP from 1988 and Kim Wilde’s on.

I’m sure she’s a lovely woman, but fuck me, the lass couldn’t sing. Or dance. Or mime.
And yet, she’s still doing the rounds, all these decades later.

See also Bananarama. Who goes to see these acts?

I’m not sure if it’s me that’s missing something, so which acts leave you confused at their success?

Sorry I know it said actors; he’s certainly trying to act like he knows what he’s doing

DatsunCogs · 13/11/2019 18:41

Haven't RTFT but just have to say Jane MacDonald! Has seemingly hundreds of shows with her name on, just don't get why

Slaymill · 13/11/2019 19:21

Kelly Brooke, Liz Hurley, Fearne (limp lettuce) Cotton, Chris Evans and Andi Peters I have to mute any of them I hear on TV/Radio.

There seems to be alot more annoying ppl on ITV Holden, Kelly , Holmes, Willoughby, Walliams, Lemon, Ant & Dec, Davina, Morgan etc...

Chesntoots · 13/11/2019 19:36

Nicholas Cage. I once read an article where he was described as a "startled moose" and that's all I think about now when i see him.

NightsOfCabiria · 13/11/2019 19:49

and the thread’s back!

I wanted to add:

Paul McCartney
Olivia Colman

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/11/2019 21:17

Aled jones. There’s a reason you won’t see him on bbc anymore

He must have been forgiven - he's a regular on Songs of Praise again now.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2019 21:21

Ellie Goulding - shit voice, massive head

Ok so you don't like her voice but why does the size of her head bother you? Confused

I see that in the New Year that ITV Daytime is having a bit of a shuffle following the Jeremy Kyle debacle. Good time to bin Lorraine Kelly off I thought. But no! She's getting an extra 15 minutes a day. What does she know? There must be something.

LiterallyCantBelieveIt · 13/11/2019 21:21

Sam Smith makes my teeth itch

Mine too. Not helped by him buying his way into the industry and stealing other people's songs.

Disfordarkchocolate · 13/11/2019 21:25

And yet Leaving Las Vegas is amazing @Chesntoots. All the rest, dross.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/11/2019 21:26

I agree 100% about Bob Dylan. It's not even like he has a pleasant voice with lots of expression and emotion albeit not the most technically accomplished - as is/was the case with Johnny Cash or Tom Petty.

And talking about linking Bob Dylan with Tom Petty, the Travelin' Wilburys always baffle me. There must have been numerous occasions where a lead singer needed to be chosen for a particular song or verse and somebody pondered the options very carefully: "Roy Orbison? Behave yourself! Jeff Lynne? Give me a break! George Harrison? Not even close! Bob Dylan? Oooooh, now HE'S the only one who can do this song real justice!!!!"

Don't ask me how I know, but I have it on good authority that the person who was in charge of doing that pondering had the initials BD (also answering to RZ).

Gingernaut · 13/11/2019 21:29

Leigh Francis aka Bo'Selecta and Keith Lemon.

WTF

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/11/2019 21:34

Daniel O'Donnell (aka Eoin McLove) is another one. His voice is OK, but he looks and sounds so incredibly bored whatever he sings - and his songs are mostly covers anyway. Why would anybody prefer to listen to him monotonously and emotionlessly singing an Elvis or Buddy Holly song whilst looking like he's mentally re-organising his herb and spice cupboard, when you could just listen to Elvis or Buddy singing it?!

And yet the ladies of a certain age (as a demographic) just can't get enough of him and book far in advance to stay at his hotel in Donegal in the hope of catching a glimpse of him. He's worth an absolute shedload of money. How?!?!?!

derxa · 13/11/2019 21:34

I've seen kim Wilde live and I can assure you she can absolutely sing. She's talented I love her voice

MyAuntyBadger · 13/11/2019 22:02

Jeremy Vine.
Danny Dyer.
Lenny Henry.
David Walliams.
Matt Lucas.
I'm old enough to remember Amanda Holden when she was an actress; she was good. I don't watch anything she's in now though.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/11/2019 22:05

Sophie Ellis Baxter - whiney little thin voice

AnnabellaFagina · 13/11/2019 22:23

James Corden, so much screen time, so devoid of talent

PathOfLeastResitance · 13/11/2019 22:29

Piers Morgan
Amanda Holden
I instantly turn off the TV at the first whiff of either of them and their ridiculousness.
I’d be shit at presenting, but I’d still be better than them and certainly less annoying.

nevergotthehangofthursdays · 13/11/2019 23:59

steaming vag Paltrow

GrinGrin
Now doesn't that give a whole new slant to the phrase 'utter tripe'.

titnomatani · 14/11/2019 01:00

Don't know if she's been mentioned on this thread but that awful Winkleman woman. How she's still on TV is beyond me.

GlitterToast · 14/11/2019 01:21

Rita ora

OpheIiaBaIIs · 14/11/2019 07:15

Morrissey. Utter dickhead.

feelingverylazytoday · 14/11/2019 07:54

The Beatles were way more than just a 'boy band'. Well, at least according to many musicians. I believe they were instrumental in developing the entire recording process. And Lennon/McCartney songs feature very heavily in the 'songs with the most covers' list.
It's not hard at all to see why so many of these people are so popular and succesful. Kylie Minogue, eg. She's hard working and professional, and nice to her fans, and knows how to use her small voice to it's best advantage.
Many other people just made the most advantage of whatever talent (no matter how small) and opportunities they were given. And, well, different people like different things. Always a difficult concept to grasp on Mumsnet, I know.

Funnyface1 · 14/11/2019 09:11

Amanda Holden, Dermot O'Leary, Tess Daly and most of all Mark Wahlberg.

Funnyface1 · 14/11/2019 09:12

Oh god and Tulisa! If she is still about? Ugh.

theendoftheendoftheend · 14/11/2019 10:09

Not helped by him buying his way into the industry and stealing other people's songs.

He did?! I did not know that >> off to Google
