What’s the FIRST thing you would buy if you won the lottery

Feel free to be as shallow as possible. Forbidden choices include: paying off your mortgage, going on holiday or charitable donations. You know, all the stuff we’d all actually do with a lottery win Grin

Mine would be to buy a really bloody nice handbag (never had one).

(Then of course I’d move on to the boring but important stuff).

OP posts:

Oooh.....books. so, so many books

A canal boat

A big squashy corner sofa

VanyaHargreeves · 02/11/2019 23:52

I think, I'd go to John Lewis and completely lose my head in

Beauty
Cookware
Home Furnishings
and
Clothing

I think I'd get all the Dyson shit as well. Beauty and Home.

According to another poster on another thread not having a John Lewis crepe pan, is abject poverty, who knew?

BackforGood · 02/11/2019 23:53

A personal assistant - they'd be needed to do all the leg work in hiring my personal chef, personal trainer, and researching all the stuff I'd buy in terms of holidays and houses etc.

VanyaHargreeves · 02/11/2019 23:53

And yes, absolutely go mad on books as would definitely have a library in my mansion

😂

Corneysjazzband · 02/11/2019 23:54

A second hand bass recorder. Has to be second hand because the one I want is now made in a different colour that won't match my other renaissance recorders. It would not be the same if they didn't match. Maybe a custom case to store my beautiful renaissance recorders.

motorcyclenumptiness · 02/11/2019 23:55

Red velvet Doc Martens and some fancy socks without holes

HeronLanyon · 02/11/2019 23:55

A taxi to Cornwall with dp to sit on a high cliff and ponder everything.

wishing4sun · 02/11/2019 23:55

Some new boots mine are buggered, pay someone to do my shift at work tomorrow. Order a new sofa. Gym membership, all very sensible but all the things I really could do with. And then.......a giant steak meal

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 02/11/2019 23:57

A good face lift
My own library
A cat cafe
Alpacas

Amani · 02/11/2019 23:57

I know you mentioned no holidays but I've always wanted to fly first class somewhere with Emirates and experience luxury as opposed to cattle class travel ...

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 02/11/2019 23:59

Oooh ...fabulous question, OP - literally the first thing, find out you've won and the next thing you buy that you wouldn't otherwise have bought ... hmmm ... I would probably upgrade my laptop. But if I happened to be going to Tesco before I could get to Currys, I might buy a bottle of the best champers they had to offer. Grin

PechaKucha · 03/11/2019 00:03

Bail money, I'm going to have to go murder my downstairs neighbour for having thumping bass music still going at midnight Angry

fluffydogcat · 03/11/2019 00:05

The medication that I need that is not available on the NHS

buckeejit · 03/11/2019 00:05

Stillfunny · 03/11/2019 00:06

A plot of land to build my dream house , just for me.

Redcliff · 03/11/2019 00:06

A car a daily driving lessons so my husband doesn't have to do all the driving. And a new kitchen.

The very first thing I’d buy...

Hmm well there is a house I love. I pass it everyday as it’s only 15 minutes from me. I love it, perfect location, perfect look. Even my seven year old knows it is my lottery house. Imagine my excitement when it came on the market last year so I could see the inside (it was way out my price range so I only saw the inside virtually) and the interior is literally perfect too. I’ve slavishly looked at it on Right Move everyday ...it took a year to sell (was stupidly overpriced) and I honestly looked at it over 300 times if not more. I’ve got the details saved.

Realistically it wouldn’t be the FIRST thing though. Neither would the Aston Martin DB11 I’d buy.

The first thing would be a really nice breakfast to celebrate with DH somewhere, and probably a new computer and iPad.

After breakfast we’d stop at Waitrose and I really would go to town on all the lovely things I normally look at longingly. Would probably stop at the gym on the way home from that to book a PT which would be needed!

feelinghelplesstoday · 03/11/2019 00:11

@Nat6999 I hate my new build. On paper it should be perfect but it has no soul and I feel looks awful if untidy. I'd buy an old house that looks lived in and homely x

KitNCaboodle · 03/11/2019 00:14

A holiday home in Florida
A holiday to Australia, followed by Japan, New York, Vegas and Canada. Oooh and a trip to Lapland.

I love my neighbours so would be reluctant to move. Would look into what renovations we could do to the house though, including a bar in the garden.

Look into private education for my children
A chef, cleaner and personal trainer.

Icantreachthepretzels · 03/11/2019 00:14

I'd arrange to buy my flat - but as that would take several weeks, if not months, to process my technical first purchase would probably be a whole load of new clothes (from asos so I don't actually have to leave the house - hate shopping.)
Before the parcels of shiny new things arrived, I would do a huge clearout of all the junk I've collected over the years - throw out clothes I never wear but keep 'just in case' Hmm , shoes that have been hidden under my bed for the past decade and burn my work clothes. (not really I'll give them to a charity shop).

Once the flat was bought, I'd get it decorated, new kitchen put in (or maybe just paint the doors and change the worktops) and buy new furniture, put down new flooring and buy a beautiful kettle and toaster - probably from John Lewis.

Then I'd sit tight and wait to see how the whole brexit debacle shakes out (because damn it this political catastrofuck is actually so bad it now interferes with my fantasies). I'm fleeing the country - no two ways about that, but it's easier to wait and find out what paperwork I'll need in advance, than run away as an EU citizen and then have to apply for new paperwork once I'm there and in a foreign language .

But once I know whether I need a visa or not - I'm buying this:
www.lionard.com/wonderful-luxury-villa-for-sale-in-camaiore-1.html I'll renovate the inside and donate my old flat to a women's shelter or homeless charity and then I will live out my days running a vineyard (a very hands off type of 'running' - I'll have minions).

Thehagonthehill · 03/11/2019 00:15

A pair of white gold earrings.Dd is having her ears pierced and wants these to wear as sleepers(but a bit fancier). All the nice ones are outside my budget.
I could also not worry about money.
I want to relocate in 2 years and would not have to carry on working after retirement,I could also afford a house I love and make it as carbon neutral as possible.
I wouldn't stop working yet as I love my job and frustrations are easier to take when you have a choice. But when I do leave a nice big party with transport laid on so that everyone who wants to can come.
I wouldn't tell anyone either, family I would only say it was a small amount.
I would invest most and live off the interest and leave excess to charities.
I could also afford to buy my DDS garret in which she could persue her dream of being an artist but that's a few years off.
Pity I don't do the lottery.

Howisitparentseveningagain · 03/11/2019 00:16

I'd hire someone to overhaul my wardrobe and get a nanny-housekeeper so we don't constantly have childcare issues when DS is ill. I'd drastically reduce my hours in work. I'd buy the fanciest bright red pram on the market and start TTC number 2.

Howisitparentseveningagain · 03/11/2019 00:18

Very first thing would probably be first class flights for my parents to come and look after DS. Then DH and I would check into the nearest five star hotel and get blind drunk on the most expensive champagne on the menu.

BillyAndTheSillies · 03/11/2019 00:21

I'd hire a night nanny. DS2 is 5 weeks old and I'm exhausted.

And pay to have every scrap of laundry in my house right now taken to be washed, ironed and bought back.

Then go and get my hair, nails, lashes and waxing done.

KeepYourCup · 03/11/2019 00:21

I'd phone a taxi to go to 24h McDonalds for me
because I'm starving but can't be arsed cooking and cant justify the cost of getting a midnight McDs... if I knew I didn't have to budget what I have in the bank atm, I'd have a share box of cheese bites and a large fries Grin

And have my teeth fixed.
