you have a property budget of £145k and can move anywhere any the UK. Where do you go?

Definitely, totally theoretical situation...absolutely not mucking about on Rightmove and Google trying to find where to move my family to...

But let's say you were a young working class family who a had 145k budget and could move anywhere, where would you go? Requirements being that you need at least 3 bedrooms, public transportation, schools nearby and somewhere relatively safe. We're not very fussy and open to anything! But I am absolutely overwhelmed by the options!

I'd stay where I am in my town in the east Midlands. Good transport to two big cities, primaries and secondary schools near by and you can easily get a 3 bedroom house on that budget. In fact I'm buying one myself next year!

Waxonwaxoff0 what town is that if you don't mind sharing? I've looked at a few east Midland towns and the ones in my budget have people saying what dumps they are. But I live in Scunthorpe for years and thought it was lovely, so definitely don't trust a lot of those kinds of reviews.

You can buy in several Midlands cities, but it will be the rough part of town for that price ... it's more like £300 in a nice neighbourhood

stucknoue that suits us, we are rough! Grin We've been stretching ourselves financially to rent in a very middle class area and I'm suffering a bit of imposter syndrome. As long as crime and antisocial behavior aren't a massive issue then we're good.

I live in the Midlands but you'd get nothing near 3 bedrooms in any of the cities near me - our one bed was £190k. My instinct would have said further north. I'd check out the places you are suggested for a few nights if you can; and see if they could feel like home. Is there a jobs requirement? Do you need a certain industry or income level?

Anchor my husband works from home, so apart from once a monthish heading to London, which is no drama from pretty much most of the UK, and I work in care, so shouldn't have any issues picking up work. Definitely not looking properly rural though.

The plan is draw up a shortlist of towns that fit the bill, then spend late winter, early spring doing weekends away in them and see where we like. But there's so many options!

why dont you stay in Scunthorpe or basically anywhere in north lincs?
you wont really find better. seriously under rated part of the country.

Liverpool but go south of the city - bettet schools, transport, parks, safer. You can afford wavertree but not the posh bit. Still decent though.

North shields - great schools, transport, by the beach.

Jobs not great in either area though.

You'd be able to achieve that in much of the north east.

For example, this (www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-66490771.html) is in Newcastle, near good schools, local amenities and public transport (bus and metro - plus easy access to the east coast mainline and airport). The area is totally fine.

Your money would go even further in other areas of Newcastle and in the surrounding area.

izzy we live down south now, we moved to be near family which I feel was a mistake. It's definitely on the cards, it's a lovely part of the UK and doesn't deserve the reputation it seems to carry. If it were up to me we'd be going to Brigg or Barton, but DH isn't as keen sadly.

East Lancashire, specifically around Burnley, Padiham or Colne. Burnley gets sneered at sometimes and like anywhere you do have to pick your area/street wisely but it's a good town with a lot going for it. On the doorstep of some terrific countryside but good-size towns and well-connected. Fast trains to London from either Manchester or Preston, both reachable by train (or to a lesser extent car) from Burnley. Housing is (comparatively) cheap there and you'd get a good three-bed for your budget.

The other one you could look at would be in/around Crewe in Cheshire. Not dissimilar to Burnley actually but a slightly different vibe. Possibly a touch more expensive though.

I'd stick close to where I am. You'd get change for your £140k. Choice of good schools, local amenities, public transport, easy to get to train station for the east coast mainline for the London trips.

You say not properly rural - but do you prefer small towns or cities? I love Birmingham and it has every suburb from very rough to posh to suit all people, but if you aren't into cities it's less good.

Pumpkinpie66 We've never lived in a city so I can't discount it, small towns are our comfort zone though.
