My washing machine just made me cry..

Had it about 7 years, it’s served us well...

Until about 2 weeks ago when it started stopping mid cycle, and needing several restarts to get it going again. It now stops each time we use it, and I’m getting fed up of one wash taking all afternoon to get finished.

We decided it’s time was up, and agreed to get a new one. We are both off work Wednesday so a trip to John Lewis is planned.

This morning, after some googling, we decided to try a descaler to see if that helps, it stalled a bit, but finished in just over the correct time. We agreed to give the machine one more chance, so I just put bedsheets in on a boil wash. Should take 2.5 hrs.

I texted my partner who is now at work, and said jokingly to keep his fingers crossed it worked.

He text back, ‘this could be the last wash it ever does..’.

I shed a few tears at this. In my defence I am hormonal, very tired from a very busy week at work and getting over a cold.

Has a household appliance ever reduced you to tears?

Only new ones when i have to cry at the expense of paying for a new one

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 15:58

Yes, I have to say my research in to possible new machines has left me quite sad.
That said, the prices seem to vary between £200 and £2500, what does a £2.5k machine do that a £200 doesn’t?!

I nearly cried when my washing machine decided to not stop filling...when I walked into the utility room the water was like Niagra Falls-flowing out of the top of the soap drawer. The floor was about three inches under water. My poor dogs were just sat in their bed with their best “it wasn’t us” look. (Don’t know why they didn’t come into the kitchen)
Took my ages to clear up and weeks to fully dry the room.

No, but my toaster today heard a few words it probably never heard before. It currently delivers toast in two ways:
slightly warm or charcoal both on setting 2 from 6

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 16:36

Status report on washing machine,

Seems to be doing well, down to 1hr 20 and not stopped yet..

It normally ceases washing at 1hr 50!

I’m not convinced toaster settings actually mean anything.

But slightly warm or charcoal isn’t a good choice.

@Prokup tell me about it. I have a two month old toaster, the most expensive I have ever bought and it does the same as yours. Plus every slice of toast from any kind of bread gets jammed and the turny on slidey thing frequently refuses to work.

Reduces me to tears most morning as I stand there in hypoglycemic state having to eat bread! Bread is NOT a breakfast food... toast is.

tanstaafl · 27/10/2019 16:40

Sounds like the drain hose inside the machine is clogged.
We had the same - machine would stop in wash cycle.

Turned out to be small change (and fluff ) sitting in the ‘u-bend’ in the drain hose. Creating a back pressure I guess.

Oh and not an appliance as such, but an electric drill.. after drilling into a water pipe under the landing. The water stain on the living room wall downstairs was almost artistic.

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 16:40

We got a toaster at the same time as the washing machine.

It’s a Krups make. Was expensive, but it’s brilliant. Actually toasts bread properly. Still going strong.

As is my washing machine! Yay!

WOE! Your glorious machine is winging it's way to silicone heaven where all the calculators and other burnt out appliances/bits of tech go.

Rest in pieces.

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 16:42

We checked the external plumbing last week, all seemed ok so reckon it was something internal.
Google suggests a circuit board issue with our model, but limescale on the element was also a possibility.

My dishwasher should return tomorrow having been fixed. The mugs, bowls and plates just left on the side have almost brought to tears when I got from work last week.

gamerchick · 27/10/2019 16:42

Have you actually unhooked it to check for blockages? They usually get caught in the attachment under the sink or in the drain hose. Have you pulled the filter out and checked that?

gamerchick · 27/10/2019 16:43

Xposts.

Nice shiney washer for you then soon Grin

I’ve had the same calculator since pre-GCSE which is still working, on original battery! And I did A level maths and an engineering degree so it had quite a bit of use!

My oven went pop today and stopped working before I’d finished the roast dinner. I’ve no money at all for a new one. That made me cry.
On a good note though, I’ve had a halogen cooker for a few years now and never used it so at least I could finish off the dinner in it.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/10/2019 17:01

How's she doing? Did she make it?

ControversialFerret · 27/10/2019 17:05

I've got the original calculator my work gave me on my first day in the sector I work in (over 20 years ago). It's still going strong and I am protective about it - to the extent that I brought it home with me because a colleague kept stealing it out of my hot desk drawers Blush

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 17:37

22 mins to go, no stops.

I think we might be on for a winner..

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/10/2019 17:48

Fingers crossed!

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 17:55

4 mins and counting...

I had a little vacuum cleaner that I was given as a gift. It was years before I used it, but it was great for the stairs.

It started to smell of burning and had to be retired. I haven't been able to get rid of it yet, am hoping it could be repaired. My mini fridge is also doing weird things and I dread the day it has to go.

Did the washing finish OK?

Mumofboth · 27/10/2019 18:10

I cried once because the tv broke and “it was such a lovely TV and I don’t want another one”. I was also tired and hormonal but perked up when I started shopping and got a better one. 🙈

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 18:12

The washing machine did it!!
Yay!

If it can do a 2.5hr boil wash without stopping it should be ok, right?

My last crappy washing machine did this. It was an Indesit. Bloke came to fix it said it was an issue with a circuit board and no point fixing as it would just happen again.

On the plus side my new washer/dryer is fabulous.
