My washing machine just made me cry..

Had it about 7 years, it’s served us well...

Until about 2 weeks ago when it started stopping mid cycle, and needing several restarts to get it going again. It now stops each time we use it, and I’m getting fed up of one wash taking all afternoon to get finished.

We decided it’s time was up, and agreed to get a new one. We are both off work Wednesday so a trip to John Lewis is planned.

This morning, after some googling, we decided to try a descaler to see if that helps, it stalled a bit, but finished in just over the correct time. We agreed to give the machine one more chance, so I just put bedsheets in on a boil wash. Should take 2.5 hrs.

I texted my partner who is now at work, and said jokingly to keep his fingers crossed it worked.

He text back, ‘this could be the last wash it ever does..’.

I shed a few tears at this. In my defence I am hormonal, very tired from a very busy week at work and getting over a cold.

Has a household appliance ever reduced you to tears?

I’ve had the same calculator since pre-GCSE which is still working, on original battery! And I did A level maths and an engineering degree so it had quite a bit of use

I still have all the pens and drawing equipment from my first job in 1985, working in a drawing office.

grafittiartist · 27/10/2019 18:20

I cried when the car was dragged away in an undignified manner to be scrapped. So sad!

OneTerrificMouse · 27/10/2019 18:21

Oh the other hand i had an iron for 25 years, from when i left home, which had only ever been used to melt wax after tie dying stuff...and my OH when we moved in together scoffed at this ancient bi of kit, flounced out and came back with super duper iron and ironing board and secured himself a job for life. The Mouse does not iron shit.

PotterHead1985 · 27/10/2019 18:29

My washer has me concerned. It's still washing ok but my floor and under the cupboard is wet. Not sure where from exactly.

On the other hand I have a mixer of my mams that's shuuusssh over 40!

Outsomnia · 27/10/2019 18:35

Sorry now, but what the heck is a 2.5 hour boil wash and why?

We wash ourselves so much now that surely to save a corner of the planet we should reduce the wash cycle times. Are we really that unclean. I think it is a marketing joke myself.

I do realise that with young kids it maybe necessary. So a pass is given there, but otherwise?

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 27/10/2019 18:38

@Outsomnia

Norovirus. That is why. Just...norovirus. nothing under boiling point will do.

blowmybarnacles · 27/10/2019 18:41

We had to get a new machine recently and the delivery man gave a little snigger when I patted the old one and said 'bye-bye old faithful, you've been great. '

It had, 12 years and a lot of pooy nappies. Was said to see it go but very happy with new one and it's quick half hour wash.

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 18:44

outsomnia the dog had had a poo related incident...

@cantfindname
Oh yes, it is supposed to be 'pop up', too. Which in its case means raise bread level with the opening. Then I am expected to either burn my fingers angling for the wedged in bread or start poking inside the slits with a knife (I know - metal and electric devices).
DH simply stands next to the toaster staring inside and then whisking the bread out with a chop stick when he feels it is done.

Paddybare · 27/10/2019 19:03

Just something else to try OP. Ours kept stopping because of a clog which we managed to clear but unscrewing the round drainage plug on the front of the machine right at the bottom (you might need to pull down a panel to see it). Worth a try, unbelievable how much fluff and gunk came out of ours- just be ready with some towels when you do undo it. Good luck.

Outsomnia · 27/10/2019 19:07

Ah OK folks. Boil wash for Noro and doggy poo. Gotcha!

But is that EVERY day?

DontCallMeShitley · 27/10/2019 19:08

Outsomnia I would love to have shorter cycles as standard but my new machine tells me mine is going to be 3 hours for a normal 40 or 60 wash with extra rinse which I have to use because it doesn't rinse properly.

I do use the shorter programmes but they are not enough for smelly socks and armpits in shirts and I have to put them in again.

The eco stuff just doesn't work like the old way when you could put a wash on for an hour and it came out clean and soap free. I don't get how it can be good to use less water and 3 x more power and still have un-rinsed laundry.

Oldraver · 27/10/2019 19:08

Well Ive not been reduced to tears over a washing machine but have had several OMG moments when I saw some programmes on the latest machiens take 3 pissing hours, I mean who has time for that.

Been looking at machines recently for DS and you need to look carefully at the programme times

Outsomnia · 27/10/2019 19:13

Dontcallmeshitly

Indeed, the two hour+ cycles have to be a marketing joke!

Saving electricity?
Saving water?
Rinsing properly?

We need to question all this lol NOW

Likethebattle · 27/10/2019 19:15

Our little car, little adventure mobile....when he was being taken away I shed a tear and said to DH ‘he’s got new adventures to go on’ he said ‘oh don’t it’s making me sad’. It was a great wee motor and never let us down!

Confuseddotcotton · 27/10/2019 19:19

Ours is going to live another day! Yay!

I mourned over the demise of a washing machine many years ago. It had been such a good, steady friend. Not since, they're just machinery and easily replaceable.

Avenilson · 27/10/2019 19:25

@Prokupatuscrakedatus I too have to babysit my toaster. I've lost countless slices of bread to it.

I have to admit I only ever use one cycle setting on my washing machine (there are about 10 e.g. wool, cottons, delicates etc) I just stick it all in and press the button on economy wash. Everything comes out clean, takes less than an hour. I have tried the 2.5 hour cycle at 90 degrees for white sheets once, to be honest they didn't seem any different when they came out than if I had just used the economy cycle. Maybe I am missing a trick. I think I am.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 27/10/2019 19:43

A toaster made me cry on holiday when the DC were very small (3 under 6). We finally worked out how to calibrate the settings on "browning" (microscopic differences between "warm bread" and "charcoal") when we discovered that, on completion, the toast pinged itself out of the toaster straight into the bin underneath the toaster shelf.

We laugh about it now, but it was Not Funny at the time.

Pleased to hear your WM appears to have recovered itself.

I have just joined mumsnet because of your post because I can totally relate!!

I actually got so emotional when my washing machine broke, I believe I became emotionally attached to my old washing machine as it was what was used to wash both my babies clothes.. My washing machine decided to call it a day when my son was just about a year old and I was so sad that it wouldn't wash any more of them.. I literally cried when they took it away and felt sadness when my new one came.. Even though it was a better machine I just didn't like it at all.. Just wanted my old one back.

I have since recovered.. 😂

Mydogmylife · 27/10/2019 19:58

@needsahouseboy
Halogen ovens are fab - we use ours all the time, hardly ever use the ordinary oven now 👍

Mydogmylife · 27/10/2019 20:11

OP our washing machine died - devastated! Dithered about meaning to get another one , 3 weeks passed, still hadn't got round to it.

I went out for the morning, came home to find DH mopping the kitchen floor BUT the washing machine was fixed!!!! He'd decided to have a go at fixing it. It turned out to be a 2 euro coin and a small empty plastic bag stuck in the drain pump at the front of the machine. I was SOOOOO excited!!!! (Really need to get a life!)

Kiki275 · 27/10/2019 20:29

Mine kept stopping due to drainage problems. Had a look at the filter and it was clogged with mostly colour catcher sheets, but also hair grips and a pencil. I now put colour catchers in a net lingerie wash bag x

x2boys · 27/10/2019 20:42

£2500 for a washing machine Shock for that amount of money I would want it to fold the clothes and put them away ,I don't have much luck with washing machine ,s they never seen to last more than 2 or 3 years calculators however my boyfriend lent me his calculator when I was doing Alevel.psychology in 1993 I think it's still working at my parents house also the original battery and he had a few years ,it's lasted much longer than the boyfriend!
