My washing machine just made me cry..

Had it about 7 years, it’s served us well...

Until about 2 weeks ago when it started stopping mid cycle, and needing several restarts to get it going again. It now stops each time we use it, and I’m getting fed up of one wash taking all afternoon to get finished.

We decided it’s time was up, and agreed to get a new one. We are both off work Wednesday so a trip to John Lewis is planned.

This morning, after some googling, we decided to try a descaler to see if that helps, it stalled a bit, but finished in just over the correct time. We agreed to give the machine one more chance, so I just put bedsheets in on a boil wash. Should take 2.5 hrs.

I texted my partner who is now at work, and said jokingly to keep his fingers crossed it worked.

He text back, ‘this could be the last wash it ever does..’.

I shed a few tears at this. In my defence I am hormonal, very tired from a very busy week at work and getting over a cold.

Has a household appliance ever reduced you to tears?

Did you check the filter?

Northernsoullover · 27/10/2019 20:49

@DontCallMeShitley was it a purple Bissell? I had my nan's until last year. She died 14 years ago. I was happily using it when it started to burn Sad

My wash machine stopped mid cycle. I checked the filter. Bad idea if it's full of water. The water comes out. Blush

Glad your washing machine lives to fight another day. I've still got my temperamental bastard.

Mine made me cry when it decided to spew gallons of hot soapy water out of the soap dispenser drawer. It did at least get the kitchen floor clean.

DontCallMeShitley · 27/10/2019 20:59

@Northernsoullover, not one of those, it was black and I think it was a Boss, used to think it was a Dirt Devil but seem to recall it wasn't when I looked. Sweet little thing, it wasn't me that was using it and I kept shouting to turn it off but was ignored until I went and pulled the plug to try to save it.

I love my machine again.

I thought I'd killed our relatively new washing machine when I discovered it vomiting water all over the floor.
Turns out I'd been a bit too heavy handed ramming dirty laundry in and had managed to muck up the door seal. A "simple" fix than involved wrestling a rubber gasket and a metal ring with a powerful spring on it back into place. Firm words were said.

I was sad to see my old Citroen saxo go. It was "harvest red" aka dusky pink and it always seemed very happy being a car. I drove it for years and it never gave me trouble - bar a bolt falling out of the door leaving me stranded in a car park holding the door on until rescue arrived - it just always seemed keen to go. Still miss it. Sigh. It was called Sammy.
We then bought a clunky ford which had a number plate similar to the name of a notorious spree killer, the incident happening the same year we bought the car. I can't help but think of that horrible name whenever I look at the car. I've never quite warmed to it, what with horrific criminal association and it's very heavy steering.

I shed a hormonal tear when I said goodbye to my faithful 18 year old dishwasher, that for the last couple of years had to be coaxed to finish a cycle by nudging the dial around manually, and made so much noise it sounded like it was trying to get into orbit Sad I don't like its replacement half as much.

The oven is probably just the element often a bit fiddly to replace if a build in model as you need to pull it out, but not a difficult job and not the end of the oven. Espares are a good place for replacement parts. We've had to change a few they do tend to burn out on electric ovens over time. Same thing happened to me actually mine died during cooking a roast dinner only at lest it was almost done. So I just left it in the hot oven it was fine. Although that did make me cry when DH fixed it as I really wanted a new one.

SistersOfPercy · 28/10/2019 08:28

My dad worked at the washing machine factory and bought DH and I our machine when we bought our first home.
It packed it not long after Dad died.

I was a bit sentimental over anything he’d had a hand in for a while.

Had a new oven on Friday. Practically skipped down the drive behind the old one waving ‘bye you fucker’ Grin
