How would you pronounce my baby name

My little girl is called Mia but people are saying it differently and it’s really annoying me! I pronounce it Mia as in mee-ah but she keeps getting calling mya, she’s only 10 days old and it’s putting me off it to the point of changing it.

Mee-ah.

Fwiw, I can't stand Mya. I always want to pronounce it m'yah with the emphasis on the yah.

I would say it like you do op. Just correct them people will learn.

Mia is 100% nicer than Evie there is just so many of them.

However talk to your dh again and have a conversation asking him to listen to your concerns and not interfere until you have had your say. Then see what you can do.

I have a DD with a Irish name she is almost 16 and we still have to correct people in how to say it (they get confused by the silent o) she doesnt mind very much with strangers but does get sharp with people who knows her. I think thats fair enough.

I'd pronounce it Mee-ah and it's a shame that there is so much ignorance about it. You're going to have to put them right every time which is tiresome. Those who have studied a foreign language for instance will know immediately but as that's gone by the wayside it doesn't help, does it? FWIW it's a lovely name.

Mee-ah 100%
But not sure I'm understanding why posters are saying that Maya would be pronounced My-ah. It's May-ah surely.
My-ah would be Mya or Maia.

Dont change it - Mia is a beautiful name.

Honestly this is so tricky. As a teacher I know girls called Mia/Mya/Maya/Maia and the pronunciations seem to vary wildly (often bearing no relation to the chosen spelling). I always thought Mia was pronounced Mee-a but i now always ask!

Use Evie. You birthed her your vote is final. Not fair at all to railroad you in the hospital when you'd just gone through labour and birth.

People will unlearn and relearn her name, it's a very small fraction of her life she has had this name!

Sexist bollocks.

If it’s bothering you already I would change it! I know a Mee-ah and a My-ah both with the Mia spelling.

People will always get it wrong sometimes because people are idiots. People choosing the wrong spelling for the wrong pronunciation have exacerbated this. I think most James have occasional issues with pronunciation and or spelling. However, your DH sounds like he's been a total control freak over this and that's more of the reason you aren't happy with the name. It's very definitely not too late to change it. W changed one of ours after announcing. It's no biggy, cards with the wrong name in are just as fun for their memory box. Don't let him rail road you, sounds like he planned this all along and pushed you when you were particularly vulnerable.

I'd have said Me-ah.

I would pronounce it as you do. It's a lovely name and I think it's normal to an extent to have some doubts over the name as it's a huge thing. However it sounds as though it was a last minute change made hastily so maybe don't register her just yet and see how you feel in a few days.

Part of my job involves working with children at an attraction, so on an average week I meet around 100 different children.

I've lost count of how many Mias I've met over the years but they've all pronounced their names as 'Me-ah'. I can't think of a single 'Mya' at all.

I'd say 'Mee-ah' - but I have a great niece called Mia, and that's how her name's pronounced and has been for the last 8.5 years. I don't know any 'My-ah's, at all, but suspect you might get an odd 'May-ah' thrown in at some point.

Thing is... it's your baby's name. The first tangible gift you bestowed upon her. Sod other people getting it wrong - you simply correct it. My daughter's name has a very distinctive "ah" sound in the middle of it, which people presume to not be there/be silent. It used to drive me mad, but... everyone got the hang of it after a few weeks. They will with your baby's name, too. Just correct, smile, correct again if necessary, and... they ought to twig. Make a fuss, though, and if you have family like mine, they'll deliberately keep on with the getting it wrong just to wind you up.

Mia is a beautiful name. Flowers

Mee-ah is how I would pronounce it and is how every other Mia I know is pronounced.
I know a my-ah who is named Maia.

Mi-ya , but that's only if I'd seen it written down before I'd heard it said. I'd pronounce it however you pronounced it when telling me her name.

I would say Mia. For what its worth. I absolutely love it and is top of my list if I had another daughter. I am suprised that it is so confusing for people to say. That said, if it bothers you, I would consider changing it. But give it bit more time
