How would you pronounce my baby name

My little girl is called Mia but people are saying it differently and it’s really annoying me! I pronounce it Mia as in mee-ah but she keeps getting calling mya, she’s only 10 days old and it’s putting me off it to the point of changing it.

I'd pronounce it Evie and tell people your husband was a damn bully.

Evie rhymes with Stevie surely?

All the Evies I know are pronounced Ee- vee

Every Evie I know it’s pronounced Eee-Vee.

The Evies I know are spread between Ireland ( several relatives named after my granny) and the US and greater London metropolitan area.

The name is short for Evelyn, pronounced with short Es. Evv- uh- linn.

The long E pronunciation was Evelyn Waugh, a man.

Quite honestly, I have never heard of an Evie with the long E pronunciation.

Well yes but two points.

  • not all shortened versions of names follow the pronunciation of the original name. Jim for James, Kate for Kathrine for example
  • it is now used as a name in its own right so often isn’t short for anything.

Evie pronounces Evvie?? Never heard of that in all my years!

Report
NannyR · 22/10/2019 14:19

All the Evies I've come across pronounce it eevie, as it's a standalone name or a pet name for Eve or Eva. I know of only one Evvie, that's short for Evangeline.

I'd say Mee-a, the only 'My-a' I know is spelled Maya so pretty obvious.

When Mike and Zara Tindall (Queens granddaughter and her rugby player husband in case no one else is sad enough to know Grin) announced the name of their eldest it was Mia (pronounced My-a). I'd never heard of it pronounced that way and always though it was Meeah

Someone had it right back on page 2 or 3. If you don't like Mia and he doesn't like Evie then you haven't named her, have you?

You are her mum. Your DH just can't ignore you on this.

Evie's gorgeous (and 100% Ee-vie not Evvy. It's adding a "ee" sound onto Eve like Kate to Katie). If your DH has gone off it, fair enough, but you HAVE to go back to the drawing board and find a name you both like. Neither of you should be the unilateral decision maker on this. A few days old and a few cards sent are no reason at all. She needs a name you both like.

Evie is short for Evelyn, Eveline, Evalina, Evaleen and all other variations, and should follow the E pronunciation of the original name even when used as a stand alone name. (Edie follows the long E pronunciation of Edith.)

The male form of the name was pronounced with the initial long E (as in Evelyn Waugh). As a male name it has gone the way of the dodo.

It hasn't traditionally been used as a short form of names that are equally or just about as short, like Eve or Eva. (And Eva is very often pronounced Ava.)

I’d ask if she was a Mee-a or a Mi-ya. There are quite a few in our village and there’s a 50:50 split on pronunciation.

Having grown up with a name people couldn’t spell or pronounce (albeit a surname) I’d be tempted to change to something else if the confusion is irritating already,

Math I think we will just have to agree to disagree. I wonder where you are based that makes "Evaleen" a common name.

Ashb123 · 23/10/2019 18:40

Everyone around me is telling me not to change it they like it, I officially hate it and people keep putting her middle name with it and making it sounds like a double barrel name and it’s making me cringe!

I thought it was pronounced mee ah. If people pronounce it wrong you just need to tell them the correct pronunciation they will soon get used to it.

The problem is that when you first started the thread, you didn't mention the back story about deciding on another name and being bullied into this one by your partner. Some people will only read your first post and not subsequent ones, and that's why loads of people replying have just said to keep Mia because it's a lovely name. The fact is that you need to love (or at least really like) the name - and your partner does not have the right to bully you into accepting his choice. Other people's opinions don't matter, even if everyone else loves Mia, you don't have to stick with it if you don't like it.
