How would you pronounce my baby name

My little girl is called Mia but people are saying it differently and it’s really annoying me! I pronounce it Mia as in mee-ah but she keeps getting calling mya, she’s only 10 days old and it’s putting me off it to the point of changing it.

The Eevie pronunciation is a mistake.

Most of the name websites I've been on list Evie as a variant of the Hebrew name Eve, meaning life. I've only found one that mentions Evelyn under the Evie heading and that's alongside Eve. Like Katharine is a variant of Catherine. Maybe you're both right and there are two names with the same spelling but different history and pronunciation?

I would pronounce Mia, Mee-ah.
Mya, Maya, Maia are all pronounced the same way.

You have misunderstood the word 'variant' there. It doesn't mean 'diminutive'. And the site is wrong as to the origin of the name Evie too.

Evie was originally a diminutive of the name Evelyn and its variants, all of which feature a short E sound. Evelyn comes from the Old French Aveline, and is used as a version of the Irish Eibhlin (pronounced Ev-leen, often anglicised to Eileen, Aileen or Evelyn).

The Eevie pronunciation is a mistake.

Evaleen (or Evaline) is not a common name but it was popular back when the original grannies bore names that are now back in vogue.

Evelyn is and was much more common and Evie (rhyming with heavy) is short for it.

Eve was never a popular name even 75-150 years ago. The name Evie did not derive from Eve.

I would have pronounced it Mee ah.

I once had 2 Mias in my class, one was Me ah and one was My ah, I always got them the wrong way round!

People saying My-a clearly need grammar lessons as my is my so Mia can't be My-a

That's not how it works!! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ someone needs to learn about how English isn't a phonetic language, wow. And the name is not the Italian word for mine either.

People absolutely can and obviously do pronounce it both ways. That is not necessarily an issue OP but you are obviously not sure about the name in general and that just adds to it.

FWIW I think Evie is a lovely name and if you are unhappy about changing it you should stick to your guns.

Start a new thread asking if you should change your baby's name because you don't like it and your husband railroaded you.

This one is going to run and run with pages of people saying 'I've always said Mee-a'.

CHANGE IT!!!

You CANNOT hate your daughter's name.

Do NOT listen to anyone else. It's just nothing to do with them really, you decide on the name and they accept it!

15 weeks is nothing - and if you were going to get used to it, you would have by now.

In a year's time it will all be forgotten and the new name will just be her.

Nonnymum · 23/10/2019 22:17

You haven't failed her. She is 10 days old having a baby is the biggest change in your life you can imagine and your hormones will be raging. Talk to your DH, tell him how you feel and if you really hate Mia try and think of a new name that you both think will suit her.
Good luck and Congratulations on the birtj of your lovely daughter!

It is definitely pronounced Mee-Ah.
My-ah is The pronunciation for Maia or Maya.

I’m bias though because our dog is called Maia.

If you both of you do not agree on a name then you need to go back to scratch and start again.

No Mia and no Evie.

Names are a compromise between a couple. I think lots of children are named compromise names, unfortunately one parent’s favourite name is often disliked by the other parent. Disappointing if you love it but the baby’s name ultimately needs to be liked by both both parents.

Go and discuss it. It doesn’t sound as if enough discussion happened while you were pregnant.

I officially hate it

Decision made then, surely. It has to change. You are her mum. You can't give your child a name that makes you cringe.

The first name and middle name thing does fade when babies stop being newborns, I think.

I've never met a Mia pronounced My-a. I'd always assume it was Mee-ah!

Her middle name is my mums name so we can’t use that, I’ve even been googling names that Mia can be used as a nickname but I’ve came up with nothing, I feel like I’ve failed her.

If you don't like Mia even if it is pronounced properly then you should choose something else. If your DH doesn't like Evie is there something you both like? You say she has a middle name do you both like that? Could you turn it into her first name and forget both Evie and Mia

No I value everyone’s opinion on here because it’s subjective I meant my family and friends etc

The problem is that when you first started the thread, you didn't mention the back story about deciding on another name and being bullied into this one by your partner. Some people will only read your first post and not subsequent ones, and that's why loads of people replying have just said to keep Mia because it's a lovely name. The fact is that you need to love (or at least really like) the name - and your partner does not have the right to bully you into accepting his choice. Other people's opinions don't matter, even if everyone else loves Mia, you don't have to stick with it if you don't like it.
