How would you pronounce my baby name

My little girl is called Mia but people are saying it differently and it’s really annoying me! I pronounce it Mia as in mee-ah but she keeps getting calling mya, she’s only 10 days old and it’s putting me off it to the point of changing it.

Mee-ah, 100%. Otherwise it should be spelt Maya, Maia or Mya.

Every Mia I know is "Mee-ah"

MontyBowJangles · 20/10/2019 10:27

Oh yes, correction, Maya could be May-ah or My-ah.

Then you've got all the Amelias and Emilias... And now Malia (Barrack Obama's daughter's name) they all just sound so similar...

diddl · 20/10/2019 10:27

I'd say Me-a.

But I agree, if he doesn't like Evie & you don't like Mia then you need a new name.

Don't let him sneak off & register!

Mia I would pronounce Mee-ah.
Maia, Myah, Mya I would pronounce My-ah
Maya... I wouldn't be sure if it's May-ah or My-ah

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 20/10/2019 10:28

My DD is called Leah, which I thought was an old and well established name and people would know how to pronounce it.

Nope, she is regularly called Laya or just Lee.

1066vegan · 20/10/2019 10:28

Teacher here. I've known quite a few Mias and have heard both pronunciations so would ask the child (or the parents in the case of a baby) how they pronounced their name.

MissMadEyeMoody · 20/10/2019 10:29

I have this same issue when DD, also named Mia. Wanted to change but she's already registered.

I'd change if you don't love it

chartreuse · 20/10/2019 10:30

I would say Mee ah. It's a beautiful name and people will realise once you say it, but it sounds as if you really love Evie.

Don't let DH bully you into calling her a name you don't love. I firmly believe that the person who carried her and gave birth to her should have the final say over the name. People change their minds all the time, often weeks after the birth, don't worry about that. Everyone apart from you will forget you even considered Mia in a few weeks.

Go with your heart on this, and congratulations on your beautiful daughter!

Wheat2Harvest · 20/10/2019 10:30

I would just correct people as you go along and say her name is pronounced mee-ah.

A friend of mine and his DP named their baby son Elias. My DP and I were pronouncing it Ee-lie-us until we were were told it was Ellie-us. No big deal - they were nice about it and we apologised for getting it wrong.

Geneva1995 · 20/10/2019 10:30

Definitely mee-ah, although I would probably double check with the parent as I know a little girl called Mia and it’s pronounced My-ah Hmm in that case I would of spelt it Mya.

MorningMonsters · 20/10/2019 10:30

I would think Me-uh but I have met a few Pronounced My-uh so now I would always check the pronunciation first .

MotherOfDragonite · 20/10/2019 10:32

Mee-ah as in Mia Farrow!

Geneva1995 · 20/10/2019 10:32

I actually remember saying to one of the girls mum I looked after a few years ago, is it pronounced Mee-ah or My-ah and she said “oh which ever”

In my opinion they are 2 different names

Beautiful3 · 20/10/2019 10:32

Go with Evie.

Hellabove5 · 20/10/2019 10:33

Mee-ah for sure.
I'd not change it. Just keep correcting people and they will soon learn.
My name is a long one and still people get it wrong and I'm 28. Doesn't bother me too much

Blondebakingmumma · 20/10/2019 10:34

Mee ah

Horsemad · 20/10/2019 10:36

Stick to your guns on this one, OP. Why does his choice overrule yours? 🤔

Personally I like both Evie and Mia (Me-yah) .

Equimum · 20/10/2019 10:39

As others have said, once she can talk, she’ll happily correct people (and there’s nothing like a pre-schooler putting you in your place). We didn’t even realise there was another way of saying our son’s name, but when people do, he always tells them it’s actually pronounced....

If you live the name, go with it.

daisypond · 20/10/2019 10:39

Me-ah. It’s an Italian word and that is how it’s pronounced.

mintich · 20/10/2019 10:41

Mee-a

SoupDragon · 20/10/2019 10:41

if he doesn't like Evie & you don't like Mia then you need a new name

This.

(Me-a is my go to pronunciation for Mia unless told otherwise)

LouiseLouisa87 · 20/10/2019 10:41

Me-a

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 20/10/2019 10:43

I’d say it your way but I work with someone who has the same spelling but pronounces it maya. I think yours is the more common way.

Mummyshark2018 · 20/10/2019 10:47

I think it's one of those names that people say it in different ways so if this really annoys you then change it. It's not to late and people will understand- maybe not your dh though, he sounds a bit of an arse. Btw I love Evie, this was on my list when I was expecting.

GrumpiestCat · 20/10/2019 10:48

Defo Mee-ya. I'd expect a name said as MY-A to have a Y in it.

Honestly if you haven't registered it yet there's time to change it. Mia could be a lovely middle name. Get the name books out again there's millions to choose from.
