House plants?

How many have you got?

I mentioned my house plants at work yesterday, as I was discussing how I was going to transport them when I move soon and my colleagues were surprised at how many I had. I thought I'd take them to work over the course of a week and then move them back when I'm in my new place.

My mum has just been round and coincidentally she said I was the only person she knows now, who has them?

Really? I didn't think house plants were that odd or out of fashion. I've got about a dozen across the house, I think.

I've got about 30 and am planning to add more soon! Love having plants indoors.

cometothinkofit · 16/10/2019 21:44

I've got about 15, including two chilli plants on the kitchen windowsill that have just come inside as it is too cold for them outdoors now.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 16/10/2019 21:48

Am umbrella plant that's about 5ft tall, a few aloe Veras, a tradescantia, a little money plant, couple of orchids, something variegated from IKEA, plus hordes of spider plants.

But I need more! Planning a special shelf in the kitchen...

BillywilliamV · 16/10/2019 21:49

100 odd, at least one in each room, loads on porch and conservatory, I love them. I have a dozen at work as well, they brighten the place up.

Pinkbendyman · 16/10/2019 21:51

I have 10. I’d like more but don’t have enough room.

YorkieTheRabbit · 16/10/2019 21:58

26, not including the herbs on the kitchen windowsill or the two baskets of miniature daffodils I’ve planted which are sat in the garage until they sprout, I’ll bring them into the house once they start growing

SKMCR · 16/10/2019 22:02

None until 2 weeks ago when i was reading the benefits. I do feel relaxed in the same room as them. They are away in my bedroom. I want more but kids a little too young and will mess with them so I'll wait until older.

Sallylondon · 16/10/2019 22:02

If your workmate thinks houseplants are out of fashion, then she is out of fashion! Has she not been on Instagram or Pinterest in the last three years?

PlatinumBrunette · 16/10/2019 22:07

About 15 downstairs, probably 20 or so upstairs. There’s not enough safe space for them due to cats. Got a 4’ Beaucarnea that has just come inside for the first time and the cats think it’s a new scratching post 🙄

Ginkypig · 16/10/2019 23:08

I have 8 at the moment but 4 of them are quite big. Iv just realised now Iv been thinking about them that those 4 must be at least 15 to 20 years old too

I would have more but the cat is obsessed with eating all plants so I can only have what I can keep in the kitchen!

TreacherousPissFlap · 16/10/2019 23:21

Three in the bathroom (most excellent for sexy looking tropical jobs that like the humidity)
Three cacti on DS's bedroom windowsill - they all have names and he's never watered them once since he bought them about two years ago.
Between 2 and 5 potted herbs on the kitchen windowsill. I like to use them in cooking, they're cheaper than cut herbs and they look nice too so I have no qualms.
I also have a couple of unknown green plants in the sitting room, as well as a tragic looking tiny orchid that once in a while sprouts a spectacular flower, then dies quickly and sits there looking wan for the next year or so.

ADrabLittleCrab · 17/10/2019 07:44

Sat here in my front room and counted 8 just in here, two of which are spider plants with loads of babies. There isn't a room in the flat that doesn't have plants - even ds7 asked for plants in his bedroom so he now has a windowsill of succulents. I think I'd find it a bit strange not to have any plants.

Skyejuly · 17/10/2019 07:49

1

Only cause they tend to die :(

dalmatianmad · 17/10/2019 07:55

I have a 4 in living room
2 in my kichen
1 at the top of stairs
1 in each bathroom

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/10/2019 08:00

3 at home, 3 at work. I'd have loads more if we had a porch, conservatory or kitchen windowsill (cats don't help either TBH). I've alway had plants, my mum has a houseful (she has a big porch full of them plus long kitchen windowsills). I lost one last year just short of its 30th birthday, I was gutted.

Weepingwillows12 · 17/10/2019 08:05

I have about 6 at the moment but will be bringing a few in from the garden soon for the winter and need to divide a few. I am not great at keeping them alive unfortunately. Aloe vera seem to do well with me but the rest I kill.

Someone up thread mentioned repotting in spring? Am I meant to do that? Maybe that's why they die on me (that and the occasional forgetting to water for a week).

murmuration · 17/10/2019 09:22

One, I’ve got one! That I’ve managed to keep alive for years. Probably because it’s in the birdcage. I do way better with animals than plants for some reason. I’m ridiculously proud of this success. And so hopped up on it I’m thinking of getting more. Maybe if I put them next to the bird it will help? I’d really love some indoor citrus.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 17/10/2019 09:30

20 - a mixture of succulents, cacti, peace lily's, orchids and yucca's.

SaveKevin · 17/10/2019 09:31

IVe got 7 in the living room and two terrariums.
3 in the bathroom (one that’s desperate for a repot but I can’t find just the right pot!)

I would have more if I didn’t rent so could attach more hanging / shelves for them.

I thought they were fashionable now?

SoundofSilence · 17/10/2019 10:20

I have eight if you count the kitchen basil. Not too OTT.

Another 16 at work though, if you count the cactus garden and the terrarium as one each. In my defence, though, eight peace lilies were window dressing for a project which a colleague asked me to take on when it ended and another peace lily and a huge weeping fig were inherited from colleagues/offices being emptied.

Watering on Monday morning is a pain but people often say nice things about them when they visit our end of the office.

areyoubeingserviced · 17/10/2019 10:23

Ten plants and five vases of flowers
I love them

witherwings · 17/10/2019 10:30

1 orchid and I think it might be dead ☹️
I'm not good with plants.
When I was a kid, we had loads in the house and I always think they make a room look lovely.

Whattodoabout · 17/10/2019 10:31

Eight. We have a huge one in the living room, I love it.

They’re fashionable atm.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2019 15:59

This thread has reminded me to bring in the yucca before it gets too cold. It had grown very leggy and out of shape, and when I got back from our nearly 3 weeks long spring holiday it was looking poorly, and a citrus I'd grown from a pip looked dead. I beheaded them both and put the stumps outside - both have regrown healthily.

My kitchen table is half covered with plants at this point, I need to distribute them round the house if not the neighbourhood.

EmmaStone · 17/10/2019 16:13

I've got none as I'm terrible at keeping them alive, but DD14 has had plants for a few years now and takes wonderful care of them - she's got several on her windowsill.

We've recently moved and I think the downstairs loo and main bathroom would benefit from some foliage, but I don't know where to start - I'll have to ask DD! Grin
