House plants?

How many have you got?

I mentioned my house plants at work yesterday, as I was discussing how I was going to transport them when I move soon and my colleagues were surprised at how many I had. I thought I'd take them to work over the course of a week and then move them back when I'm in my new place.

My mum has just been round and coincidentally she said I was the only person she knows now, who has them?

Really? I didn't think house plants were that odd or out of fashion. I've got about a dozen across the house, I think.

43 on the ground floor. Love them. I think they bring character and life to a room.

I have several taller than 7 feet that we have more than a decade. Very proud of them🙄😁

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 17/10/2019 16:59

Three, but I'm planning on getting more. I love the look they bring to a room! Now off the Google how to grow a citrus plant from a pip a la @ErrolTheDragon. I've only just managed to stop killing every plant I have – a lovely lady at the garden centre told me plants rarely die of underwatering, but many die from overwatering.

MaureenMLove · 17/10/2019 17:13

I'm so pleased I'm not odd! I keep looking at the pictures of my new flat and imagining where all the plants are going. Every room has 2 windows, so I'm hoping plenty of lovely sunlight and warmth to turn it into a little oasis.

I also noticed that the current owners don't have any and although it's a beautiful flat, it needs some life!

Ideally get some ericaceous compost, and always use rainwater not tap. The trick to get a high rate of germination is to carefully peel off the outer woody layer.

Citrus plants indoors are buggers for getting scale insect, does anyone know a good way of getting rid of them?

ToLiveInPeace · 17/10/2019 18:34

I have 17 but this thread has me eyeing places for more! DH always tells me how sad the house looks when I move them all out for holidays or repotting, so I like that they make it a happy home. I'm early 40s, had houseplants since I was a teenager.

FionaOgre · 17/10/2019 18:41

I have quite a few. I had a huge Dracena Margenata that was a good 7ft tall and I'd had it since I was 16. I finally dared to chop it up and make new plants. I have to get some more pots now because I've a good dozen now, a peace lily and an unknown mini tree/bush type. They're supposedly very good for the health, having live plants indoors.

PurpleFrames · 17/10/2019 18:43

I have about 10/15 in my bedsit- I think plants are quite fashionable with the whole cactus trend?

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 18/10/2019 10:59

Thanks, @ErrolTheDragon, I'm definitely going to try that! You've actually reminded me not to use tap water for houseplants – we're in a hard water area and I read ages ago that it's a killer for some plants.

Nyon · 18/10/2019 13:36

I love houseplants but am not brilliant at keeping them alive! Can I ask, are there any plants that would love a shady hall way? It really doesn't get much light but is in desperate need of something to perk up the space (ideally tall as well). I've thought about getting a fake plant but they never look as good.

PlatinumBrunette · 18/10/2019 20:48

@Nyon Aspidistra is made for that space.

I love this place for ideas hortology.co.uk/collections/shade-tolerant-indoor-plants

ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether · 18/10/2019 21:29

I don't give a flying monkey what's fashionable or not. I have far too many plants to mention, for fun, for looks, for eating, for skincare (Aloe Vera). How can anyone not want life in the world? I could use a bigger house with more window sills for them ideally.

ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether · 18/10/2019 21:40

Nyon ferns are supposed to be good for shade but I'm not an expert. You can google for 'houseplants you can't kill and tolerate shade'. I'm sure one of mine is an Aspidistra Elatior, nicknamed Cast Iron plant for a reason. Snake plants are also supposed to be super-hardy.

I do hate cacti personally. Someone once gave me one that broke off irritating little hairs every time you brushed it in any way. I usually try to rescue plants - one reason why I have so many - but that one ended in the bin.

ClientListQueen · 18/10/2019 21:58

I don't have any Blush but I'm going to get some after this thread! I have a kitchen windowsill free and I fancy some for in the bathrooms

HidingFromDD · 18/10/2019 22:07

I've got 14 just in the lounge, and it's not a large lounge... probably another 10 scattered around the house. Tend to get them in small pots and then they just go mad!

Noflora · 18/10/2019 22:14

25 in proper ceramic outer pots and a windowsill full of cuttings/recovering plants. And herbs in the kitchen

Mitebiteatnite · 18/10/2019 22:19

For those who have lots of plant babies springing up all over the place, if you use Facebook, there's a group called houseplant swap UK. Great for offloading baby plants and acquiring new ones! People are usually happy to buy or cover postage, or swap for other plant babies you want but don't have.

I only have 8 now as a few of mine didn't survive a house move.

Mitebiteatnite · 18/10/2019 22:21

Actually 8 is a lie, I've got another 3 on the kitchen windowsill and 1 each in the kids rooms so 13 in total. Unlucky number, perhaps I need to buy another 20 one or 2.

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2019 22:22

Loads haven’t counted. I love buying plants but nearly at saturation point.

BuildBuildings · 18/10/2019 22:45

I thought house plants were trendy at the mo? I've got tons I would have more too if I could keep them alive and had room. Great idea on transportation too!

Rotollali · 18/10/2019 22:46

I was about to say not that many... but I’ve counted up 37

Nyon · 19/10/2019 16:26

@PlatinumBrunette & @ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether

Thank you for those suggestions - I shall investigate and see what I don't kill!

SunsetBeetch · 19/10/2019 16:32

I have 14, including two large floor ones. I was brought up in a house full of plants myself.

Doobigetta · 19/10/2019 16:36

@ErrolTheDragon, please could you share the citrus pip tip?

FireUnderpants · 19/10/2019 17:01

I have around 40 through the whole house. DH didn't notice them until he was asked to water them before a holiday. He now thinks I have a plant problem.

Moondancer73 · 19/10/2019 17:21

About 20 but that's not enough 😂
I love them, they make my house look better and more homely.
