Have you gone cashless as yet?

Was recently looking for a new wallet.
So many places now seem to do just cardholders.

So do you still carry cash?

I guess there might be a trend for more and more card use seeing as pretty much everywhere now has a card machine and I suppose they scrapped those 2%/3% fees that sometimes used to be added on to the total cost of the transaction.
I suppose also as more purchases move online, obviously that's card only.

I always carry cash these days.

Have you read the A Handmaid’s Tale?

BettaSplenden · 15/10/2019 20:58

No i still use cash on occasion. However I also collect coins so often choose to lay cash in the hope of getting a coin I need

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 15/10/2019 20:58

I never use cash, most of my purchases are online and anything else I Apple Pay.

Youngatheart00 · 15/10/2019 20:59

I very very rarely use cash at all these days, especially over the last 12m

Aderyn19 · 15/10/2019 20:59

I don't want to just use my card - what happens when the bank site crashes and the card doesn't work? Also Handmaid's tale has scared the shit out of me - the state has you by the short and curlies if you live in a cashless society.
I note that Barclays is cancelling their customers ability to use the post office from January, having closed lots of branches, so taking away easy access to cash

Greatnorthwoods · 15/10/2019 21:00

I use cash and cheques a lot. I like cash because it’s untraceable.

Morgenrot · 15/10/2019 21:00

Mostly cashless. Although where I live is a bit backward and some places are cash only so I need to allow for that.

Fantababy · 15/10/2019 21:02

I still use cash in the pub (on the rare occasion I go to the pub!) as it's definitely quicker. Some smaller places also only accept card payments over a certain amount too.

MustardScreams · 15/10/2019 21:03

I think the last time I had cash was a good few months ago. I don’t even have a wallet anymore. Store cards kept in a pocket of my handbag and all credit/debit cards on Apple Pay.

puppyconfetti · 15/10/2019 21:03

I get paid in cash so usually carry quite a bit.

Sparklingbrook · 15/10/2019 21:04

I never use cash, just cards and online banking.

SunshineAngel · 15/10/2019 21:05

I practically never use cash, but always like to have some with me just in case. So I still need a purse with a space for money. I really love Radley purses, though they're not the cheapest (I always get mine from Cheshire Oaks, though).

Rafiple · 15/10/2019 21:05

I never use cash, its was a faff to get cash out, nearest cash point is a bit away and always seemed to be running low. Can't remember last time I used any.

Anothernotherone · 15/10/2019 21:05

I live abroad where you very much still need cash pretty much every day.

I wouldn't want to go completely cashless but the fact that places only take cash can be a pain occasionally. Anything paid for via school - both tiny village primary and secondary of well over 1000 is cash. First week of term always involves multiple envelopes of exact amounts of cash. Village shops only take cash, bakeries only take cash, many places only take one specific type of debit card not credit cards, or cash.

I do like cash just in case of a temporary problem with the banks' electronic systems or indeed mobile signal which many handheld card readers used by small businesses need. Obviously cards are preferable for big purchases.

I won't be going cashless any time soon, it wouldn't be possible here and I wouldn't actually want to.

Drizzzle · 15/10/2019 21:06

Use cash a lot.

PegasusReturns · 15/10/2019 21:07

I pay my cleaner in cash as is her preference otherwise it's almost entirely Apple Pay.

I do try to keep a reasonable sum of cash on the house - it's a hangover from living in the Middle East and it not being uncommon for ATMs to run out of cash and not be refilled in the event of an incident.

coconuttelegraph · 15/10/2019 21:09

I use cash all the time, still very much alive and well in my life

MongerTruffle · 15/10/2019 21:10

I carry cash just in case, but I haven't actually used any for a very long time.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/10/2019 21:10

Do the people who say they are cashless really pay every transaction by card - even the purchases that are a quid or two, or even less like a can of pop, bag of crisps, stamp?

I like to keep a cash float of £10/20 to pay for stuff like that, plus parking and other stuff that's cash only - a newspaper or snack/sandwich shop type purchase.

Anothernotherone · 15/10/2019 21:11

Our cleaner sends us a bill and we pay it electronically though - she's very above board with a tax number and business insurance etc which is why I'm happy for her to have a key to the house, and we can set her bills against our own tax bill.

Cash in shops, electronic bank transfer upon receipt of monthly bill sent by email to pay the cleaner Grin

I’m more or less cash free. I actually do normally have a bit on me just in case but it’s ages since I used any.

Anothernotherone · 15/10/2019 21:15

I also have 100€ in cash as "hand money" from work at all times just in case I randomly need to pay for anything small or a taxi or anything - submit the receipt, get whatever I've spent back so I always have 100€ cash (or the balance of plusa receipt) which isn't actually mine.

MsChatterbox · 15/10/2019 21:16

I have cash for playgroups thats it. Take out £10 a month for that.

MrsT1405 · 15/10/2019 21:19

I live in a small Spanish village and we only need cash for the Euromillion ticket otherwise we pay for everything with our phones or cards. It's quick and painless and everyone does it. Coffee, drinks all ok.
