Have you gone cashless as yet?

Was recently looking for a new wallet.
So many places now seem to do just cardholders.

So do you still carry cash?

I guess there might be a trend for more and more card use seeing as pretty much everywhere now has a card machine and I suppose they scrapped those 2%/3% fees that sometimes used to be added on to the total cost of the transaction.
I suppose also as more purchases move online, obviously that's card only.

What happens when your mobile phone network crashes and you can't use apple pay?

Apple Pay doesn't require an internet connection.

Elphame · 17/10/2019 17:54

Getting there. I use my K-ring to make small payments

newbienan · 17/10/2019 17:54

I use a credit card for most purchases but like cash for small amounts of shopping. Easier to budget.

I think we should all keep using cash especially with small businesses.

Cashless society could control people and know your movements

But presumably Apple Pay requires access to the mobile phone network? And there have been several well-publicised incidents recently where networks have gone down for a whole day. How would Apple Pay work then?

I always carry £16000 in cash in case I accidentally cross the US/Canadian border on a fishing trip.

I sent a letter via the post office this morning and the cost was £1.90 - I was embarrassed I didn't have that paltry amount in cash and had to use my card.

I'm going to have to get into the habit of getting a bit of cash out, because it felt ridiculous.

redeyetonowheregood · 17/10/2019 21:24

I have very deliberately, consciously, switched back to all cash as I was in a lot of debt. I find it far easier to budget and keep a reign on my spending when I use cash and I feel quite empowered by it.

I also don't like being told what to do and I am feeling very manipulated over this. My bank has closed down (Barclays) nearest is 20 miles away in opposite direction to my work. I had been using the post office but it looks as though that won't be possible from January. There is one bank left in town, Lloyds, but I am not sure it is worth changing as it could well head the same way.

How does Apple pay work without an internet connection. Off to google K-ring.

HoldMyLobster · 17/10/2019 22:39

I believe Apple Pay on your phone/watch can talk to the terminal in the shop without internet, but the terminal then needs to have some kind of connection to verify the transaction. So if the shop's internet is down then it wouldn't work (which happens where I live fairly often, including today).

I’ve gone to using my Apple Watch to pay for as much as possible. I love not needing to rifle around my handbag for purse etc. I still need cash for kid’s stuff and odds and sods.
