Have you gone cashless as yet?

Was recently looking for a new wallet.
So many places now seem to do just cardholders.

So do you still carry cash?

I guess there might be a trend for more and more card use seeing as pretty much everywhere now has a card machine and I suppose they scrapped those 2%/3% fees that sometimes used to be added on to the total cost of the transaction.
I suppose also as more purchases move online, obviously that's card only.

I still use cash a lot. I've read of people on here going out without a penny in their purse and don't understand why you would do that.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 15/10/2019 23:11

I mostly use cards but do like cash and certainly don't want a cashless society!

CatCave · 15/10/2019 23:11

I very rarely carry cash, not even small change.

Even the parking meters in my town let you pay via an app. I only lift cash if I'm using the Chinese takeaway who don't have a card machine/just eat facility.

Ginfordinner · 15/10/2019 23:18

No. I do mostly pay by card, but there are occasions where I need cash

In the local farm shop
Parking - not all pay and display near where I live takes cards
I bought an ice cream at the theatre this evening. They don't have a card machine for ice creams
Birthday collections at work
Pilates classes

I mostly use cards, but I always carry cash. We have some restaurants here which don't take cards, plus I always like to be prepared in case there's an issue with the card machine/network. I even have a little keyring that I keep a £20 note rolled up inside. It's come in handy quite a few times!

I don't use any payment apps on my phone although I have a Samsung. We get a lot of phone thefts in this area where people just grab them from your hand on a moped, so I'm wary of putting too much financial stuff on my phone. I do feel a bit old-fashioned in shops paying with a card as it's increasingly common to pay with a phone.

MuseumOfYou · 15/10/2019 23:21

I like to use cash, I don't like the thought of "big brother" knowing how and where I spend my money

Absolutely this! Last time I made a bacs payment, I had to provide a reason. There wasn't a option for 'none of your bloody business'.

Scbchl · 15/10/2019 23:21

Very very rarely have cash. Mostly use my card or my phone - that my card is set up on, if I dont have my card.

AgeLikeWine · 15/10/2019 23:21

I still use cash for small purchases at pubs and independent local shops. I have no plans to go cashless, and I always have at least £40 & €40 in my purse in case I need some cash.

isittheholidaysyet · 15/10/2019 23:23

Places I have had to use cash recently:
Cubs/scouts subs
Kids youth group entry money (And tuckshop)
School coffee morning
Donation for coffee after church
School PTA disco
Home ed sports class
Paying back an aquaintance in Wetherspoons, who had ordered for us all on the app.
Tooth fairy

Places I have used cash by choice recently:
Pub
Home ed French class
Church collection (I can't gift aid, so no reason to do standing order)
Coffee shop.
Pay a mate back for some thing she bought on my behalf.
Cash into a join kitty for a friend's birthday present.
Hairdresser.
Paying for items which were less than £2.
Kids pocket money.

isittheholidaysyet · 15/10/2019 23:24

And parking!

SwedishEdith · 15/10/2019 23:25

I'm mainly card but my local Chinese takeaway is cash only and I get the right hump that I need to withdraw cash for this .. WHY ? is this btw ? Why cash only ?

Why do you think?

PickAChew · 15/10/2019 23:28

of course I do. DS1 takes his pocket money in cash, I prefer to give cash to smaller local shops when buying small amounts or else it costs them more. I pay for small (under a fiver) bus fares in cash, I send cash to DS2's school for his weekly activities and for him to buy his morning break toast from the tuck shop run by the 6th form enterprise group.

Itsrebekahvardysaccount · 15/10/2019 23:31

Recently stopped withdrawing cash for our weekly spends as moved to Monzo.

It’s now a complete pain in my arse having to go for a tenner to pay for my weekly breakfast roll at work!

PickAChew · 15/10/2019 23:31

And never mind handmaid's tale, there's been a few times I've gone into town (actually a small city) or a nearby larger city and all the shops' card systems have been down as the internet really is not 100% reliable. I've been glad of over £50 in my purse on both occasions.

megletthesecond · 15/10/2019 23:33

Mainly cash here. I find it easier to budget.

Direct debits for bills, credit card for large purchases or on-line shopping.

Aridane · 15/10/2019 23:33

I use cash other than for online purchases or goods over £100 where I may want the CCA protection

Aridane · 15/10/2019 23:35

Cracked me up at airport in Hurghada where people came along totally cashless and then Found visas to be purchased on arrival could only be done in cash

Aridane · 15/10/2019 23:36

Sorry - meant to say carryi g some cash is always a good idea

Ginfordinner · 15/10/2019 23:40

I am amazed that some people assume everywhere is cashless. I agree that supporting small, local shops by using cash for small purchases is a good idea.

Sparklingbrook · 16/10/2019 03:34

If I find a shop that doesn’t take cards (rare) I go and get some cash out there and then. But I can’t remember the last time I had to.

scaryteacher · 16/10/2019 04:03

I use cash as I live in Belgium (til next week), and whilst Pritchard moved more towards cars as, contact less and paying with your phone....some places still prefer cash.

When I move back to UK next week, I'll need cash for the catteries I'm using as neither take cards, just cash or cheques. The village shop is cash or cheque only as well.

Purpleartichoke · 16/10/2019 04:35

I always carry cash, but it is rarely used so it is folded up and slipped into one of the card slots in my wallet.

I don’t even access my wallet that often anymore since I can pay via my phone at so many places.

minesagin37 · 16/10/2019 04:42

What about all those people with absolutely no access to cards? I still see a large number of people paying cash in Aldi. I pay for most things with card but it started to dawn on me last week that I hardly use cash now.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 16/10/2019 04:44

Never use cash. I can't remember the last time I got any out or handled any.

minesagin37 · 16/10/2019 04:44

@Aridane they are told to take cash for this on all the sites so no sympathy there.
