What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

Another bar soap user here - when we were on holiday on a Scottish island earlier this year we found a shop that makes the best soap ever, and we buy it online a whole loaf at a time and cut off a bar as we need it. The rest of the loaf lives in the cupboard with my woollies - they smell luuurvely.

Just had a tin of mandarins and evaporated milk. Stolen from my Brexit store cupboard which looks like the 1970s revisited. Tinned stewed steak, tinned ravioli, pilchards, sandwich spread, potted meat etc. Hope I dont have to eat it!

SomewhereInbetween1 · 15/10/2019 15:31

Zoidbergonthehalfshell care to share the shop name? 😁

I love a good dollop of condensed milk in porridge and still regularly buy sandwich spreads, which I'm pleased to read other people do as well! 😁

Was looking around for Callard & Bowser's butterscotch recently. Alas, long gone, it seems.

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 15/10/2019 15:40

I buy fried onions in the Eastern European section of the supermarket

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/10/2019 15:44

Have always used bar soap - used to buy Asda baby soap but a BiL found a trad. olive oil soap factory in Marseilles that was about to close, and bought up several huge blocks. It doesn't look very nice but lathers up beautifully and we probably now have enough for ten years!

BTW in the absence of Lux flakes etc. you can grate a bit of bar soap for hand washing delicates or wool, or else just swish a bar around in warm water. Works fine.

Bisto powder (not granules) - I've always used a little for making proper gravy in the roasting tin with the meat juices and a little flour - Bisto adds browning/seasoning.

Angel delight
Asda little pots of sandwich paste

My dp buys fisherman's friend

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 15/10/2019 15:55

Tinned chicken in sauce, tinned ham, tinned and dried potatoes,

Kaykay06 · 15/10/2019 15:56

Scottish and have never bought Lorne sausage can’t stand the stuff. I buy shake and vac the lemon one though. Only use bar soap either Wright’s/pears or Palmolive and a nice one from tk maxx they last forever!
Love angel delight butterscotch/chocolate but occasionally buy tip top to have on tinned fruit cocktail. Loved chicken spread too yum getting hungry now. Also still buy rice pudding my older boys love it

SpiderCharlotte · 15/10/2019 15:57

Boil in the bag cod in butter sauce. Don't think anyone else has bought them since the 1970s. They remind me of my mum.

I just let out a little 'awww' at your post @Scarlett555, they remind me of my mum too. 😊

Whathappenedtothelego · 15/10/2019 15:57

Just thought of another - dd's favourite chocolate bar is a peppermint ruffle, she buys them with her pocket money.

StillWeRise · 15/10/2019 16:04

cotton hankies can be sterilised in the microwave, just put them in a microwave proof container with a lid (don't seal it) and some water, blast it on high for a few mins, then you can wash with everything else

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/10/2019 16:10

TCP best thing ever for grazes.

Coal Tar soap, love the smell.

NaomiFromMilkShake · 15/10/2019 16:24

Grapefruit segments.

SilverySurfer · 15/10/2019 16:24

Blankets - I think I'm the last person in the world who uses sheets and blankets rather than a duvet.

Bar soap - Cussons Imperial Leather - have used it for 70+ years, unlikely to change now.

Pudding rice to make my own rice pudding - the nutmeggy crust is to die for.

I buy a £20 voucher once a year to top up my PAYG mobile phone.

Agree re lard, it's impossible to make good shortcrust pastry without it.

Roussette · 15/10/2019 16:26

I only use Bisto powder for making gravy, granules are rubbish.

My DH uses proper handkerchiefs, except if he has a cold. Grin

Fray Bentos steak and kidney out of a tin (not me! DH)

Tinned sardines (not me! DH)

One thing out of fashion is a nightclothes holder. My oldest had a Mickey mouse I don't think they even make them now
I'm very reminiscent now. I always had a nightdress case that sat on the bed. Forgotten all about them till I read that.

Salene · 15/10/2019 16:27

Camp coffee

Kernowgal · 15/10/2019 16:28

Tins of stewing steak. Like someone upthread, it reminds me of my mum. Lovely with steamed broccoli and potatoes, or mash.

And whoever mentioned the sponge flans with tinned fruit and quick gel, and lashings of evaporated milk - YES YES YES! Mum would do them with tinned mandarin slices. I bloody loved that as a pudding. I might have to recreate that at Christmas for my dad and brother.

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 15/10/2019 16:30

I also buy quite a few bars of soap. Not the stuff you get in supermarkets though, proper soaps from small batch makers.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 15/10/2019 16:34

I use washing powder, loose leaf tea, bars of soap and a im when I can find it.

lazyarse123 · 15/10/2019 16:35

I always make a sponge flan with mandarins at christmas but we have it with ice cream.
Dh likes proper hankies which we usually get from markets, if he's got a cold he washes them himself.

Janaih · 15/10/2019 16:37

tinned potatoes make a delicious Spanish omelette.

MountainDweller · 15/10/2019 16:43

@Time40 Clinique still makes powder compacts

MilkTrayLimeBarrel I still use a paper diary!
