What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

@FritataPatate I use pearl barley when I make Scotch Broth . And marrowfat peas

57Varieties · 16/10/2019 21:18

Do you still get mentholatum? It was a kind of menthol Vaseline. The only person I ever knew to buy it was my gran

ThePortlyPinUp · 16/10/2019 21:20

Slips for under my dresses. I'm into the rockabilly scene and no one wants to see my knickers when I'm jiving on the dance floor.

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 16/10/2019 21:23

Those red packets of little rum truffle balls with the chocolate sprinkles.

Whathappenedtothelego · 16/10/2019 21:23

I had no idea some people don't use flannels Shock
And as for people not eating marmalade, I'm reeling in shock.

MissBattleaxe · 16/10/2019 21:24

Flannels. We all use them and rewash them. I've become obsessed with bar soap. I'm always drooling in TK Maxx. They have the best selection.

Itsjustmee · 16/10/2019 21:24

Boil in the bag COD in butter sauce ( Iceland do 4 for £2 ) so I stock up on loads of them
Angel Cake - this used to be a Sunday night treat with my mum & dad
Faggots
Findus crispy pancakes

MissBattleaxe · 16/10/2019 21:24

Also Green's cheesecake mix. Gorgeous.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/10/2019 21:27

If you're in Scotland, dried split peas are easy to find, they're the Scotty brand.
Their fresh soups are great too, traditional ones like lentil, and chicken and rice etc.
I also love Simon Howie traditional meat products, beef olives, smoked hough, black pudding.

MissBattleaxe · 16/10/2019 21:30

Battenburg

SamBeckettslastleap · 16/10/2019 21:30

Starch spray for my washing

longtimelurkerhelen · 16/10/2019 21:33

Bisto gravy powder, the granules don't disintegrate properly and taste chemically , still have to buy the granules for dh as he cant manage the powder.
Bovril on toast or white bread and butter, never in a drink weirdos
Soda crystals
Tinned Ham occasionally, I like the jelly stuff on it.
Tinned Corned Beef.
Tinned Sardines
Vegetable Suet though not any more now I know it has been infected with palm oil ffs

Hadtonamechangeforthis123 · 16/10/2019 21:36

Sardines/pilchards in tomato sauce in those little tins with a ring pull.
Bar of soap - don;t like shower gels.
Brillo pads - Think I must be the only person I know who doesn't have a dishwasher!
Turkish delight bars - LOVE them!

MitziK · 16/10/2019 21:41

Kohlrabi - from the nearest Turkish shop. Really cheap, too.

Household stuff - Stardrops when I can get hold of it, it's rarely in the pound shop and nowhere else stocks it round here.
Vim/Ajax - sent DP out to get some and he knew exactly what I meant, can't remember which one he came back with, but scouring powder nonetheless.
Zoflora - but it's not cheap anymore, thanks to certain brand promoters.
Solid soap. Used to be Pears or Wright's Coal Tar, but since they took out the bit that actually did my skin any good, I get Dove and then use Psoriderm bath additive to sort out itchy skin.
Fullsize box detergent, Daz in my case.
Brasso (even if I still call it Duraglit). Brilliant on the sink.
Windowlene pink goop. Smells evil, but at least the inside of window looks clean afterwards, unlike with modern sprays, vinegar or soapy water. Only gets done once a month (mainly because the windowcleaner coming fortnightly means that you can see we don't clean the inside anywhere near as often.

Did get dried Marrowfats (and sprouted them regularly), but they disappeared from local shops a few years ago. DP won't countenance rating the tinned ones, though.
DP gets tinned potatoes occasionally. And tinned ravoli. We draw the line at the disgusting muck that is tinned macaroni cheese.
Pease pudding tins for when I CBA to make the stuff.

Smoked fish in a packet with a frilly pat of butter inside. DP despises the stuff, but gets it for me occasionally. I'd have boil in the bag cod in parsley sauce and frozen peas as well if I could get it nearby, as that was my childhood 'not well but being looked after by Granddad whilst Your Mother goes down the village' food.
Goblin Steak and Kidney Pies.
Marmite and Bovril.
Gold Top Milk. Mainly for DP, as I'm sadly not good with milk anymore, but I sometimes let myself take the hit just for a taste.

Instead of Fisherman's Friends, I get VocalZone pastilles.

I want some hankies (and I would embroider them, haven't done any sewing in years, but wouldn't mind trying again). After all, I use a Mooncup and had two kids in proper old terry nappies, so washing things that desperately need a good wash isn't that much effort in comparison - I'd just stick them in the hot wash with towels.

And - confession time - I've just bought some thermal vests from M&S. I work right in front of an automatic door and I'm freezing my arse off first thing in the morning.

Never mind middleage, we're well on the way to old age with our purchasing choices.

Sundancer77 · 16/10/2019 21:45

@PrincessHoneysuckle I live abroad and it’s in more or less every shop here 🤷‍♀️🤣
The other bits I mentioned are in Iceland shops here..it’s like going back to the 80’s when I go in

morrisseysquif · 16/10/2019 21:56

@SamBeckett
I still have , and won't part with my free standing gas cooker with eye level grill.

How else can you make perfect cheese on toast or welsh rarebit? I don't think you can get those now Sad

Wombleish · 16/10/2019 22:00

The death of eye-level grills is saddening, I bet it leads to far more burnt offerings these days.

threatmatrix · 16/10/2019 22:05

joyfullittlehippo

I always use soap. I buy the posh ones from TK Max they last for ever and such good quality. Also better for the environment x

user1469830006 · 16/10/2019 22:07

Liga biscuits and barleycup

justasking111 · 16/10/2019 22:12

Cannot find horlicks tablets. Something else I miss is Bournvita, such a lovely memory flavour wise.

user1486131602 · 16/10/2019 22:19

Thank you!
Love the boil in the bag butter sauce cod, couldn’t find it. I’ll have to slum it at farm foods........needs must!
And suet so I can make dump, inns!

browneyes77 · 16/10/2019 22:19

Ooh I’ve thought of some more

Brandy Snaps
Malted Milk biscuits

My mom still buys Mint Vienetta every Xmas for when my younger brother goes round, as he’s loved it since he was a kiddy (he’s now 37).

My parents also still buy Neapolitan Icecream and icecream cones to go with it Grin

SweetMarmalade · 16/10/2019 22:27

Amore Amore perfume by Cacharel Blush absolutely love it though and so many people comment how nice I smell Grin

I buy the veggie mushroom pate from Asda to remind me of my childhood school lunches. Couldn’t bring myself to try the meat paste varieties these days.

Ds loves lemon curd so we usually have a jar lurking in the fridge.

Golden Wonder crisps, although the flavours don’t seem to be so intense these days! Shame, I loved the raw feeling in my mouth after consuming a few packets of their Salt and Vinegar flavour Grin

Talking of crisps and a bit off topic. Anyone wonder why Walkers decided to put their cheese and onion crisps in blue packs and salt & vinegar in green? Everyone else is the other way! Cheese & onion just don’t taste the same out of a blue packet.

Ooh, one more crisp one, I still buy Smiths salt & shake crisps occasionally.

fatimashortbread · 16/10/2019 22:28

Mushroom Ketchup

NoProblem123 · 16/10/2019 22:49

That liquid ‘camp’ coffee - just with cold milk for a coffee milkshake - yum 😋

And boxes of Radox bath salts -saving on the plastic again and they are way better than bubble bath for achey muscles
