What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

I use washing powder too @Mrsjayy . It is better at washing the clothes due to the mechanical friction of the particles and the chemical action of the ingredients. I've never fallen for the advertisements with washing powder . Plus you can regulate the amount you need per wash.

Suet puddings and suet pastry. Not that I make either now but I made a steamed suet pud about ten years ago for my sister and I to share, as kids looked on in horror. 2 tablespoons of golden syrup, 1oz of butter, put in pudding basin, add about 8oz of suet dough - dumpling mix- rolled into a ball, make a greaseproof paper lid and steam for a couple of hours. Serve with custard and, if you can stand it another spoonful of syrup. Suet pastry for a meat pie is excellent, crisp and golden, and a steamed steak (&kidney?) Pud is delicious. Suet should make a comeback.

Husband uses arrowroot to thicken gravy or chick pea flour as we are gluten free

sockittome123 · 15/10/2019 19:42

Pink Panther biscuits, always remind me of my great aunt. Eating half a packet of them now!

StillWeRise · 15/10/2019 19:47

Dowser · 15/10/2019 19:47

Always have some victory vs
I think they have a mild laxative effect
Always welcome here and always Epsom salts in the bath
( you can make cheap magnesium oil with ES and some boiled cooled water. Put in a spray bottle
Costs pennies)

Katinski - where do you get pink Camay? My mother loved it! And is that Crabbies Green Ginger Wine? You only saw it advertised at Christmas. Anyone remember the Woollies Christmas advertisements?

Rosesarere · 15/10/2019 19:51

Love this thread, flan was a firm favourite in my house growing up up, I still use bar soap, washing powder in a box and I love victory vs!

Dowser · 15/10/2019 19:54

Katinski · 15/10/2019 19:55

Oh OK, you near Birmingham Markets? There's a stall in the Indoor Market that sells themSmile

ExhaustedGrinch · 15/10/2019 19:56

Caramac ... I don't even know anyone else who likes it!

MarkinTime · 15/10/2019 19:57

I forgot cornflower. I use a lot of that.
You can buy atora vegetable suet for years. It's a decent substitute if you run out of the beef one. Not made with Palm oil as far as I know @StillWeRise

SomewhereInbetween1 · 15/10/2019 19:57

ExhaustedGrinch I do!! I was so excited when they bought out caramac buttons!

Katinski - I wish! Loved those chocs. No I live on the south coast so don't get up to Birmingham very often.

Time40 · 15/10/2019 19:58

Brillo pads- every kitchen should have them

Definitely. Brillo pads are amazing. Nothing else works as well.

And Yes to green ginger wine. There are loads of things on this thread that I use.

Has anyone else got a vintage non-steam iron?

lettersbyowl · 15/10/2019 19:58

They do still make nightclothes cases - google pyjama case!

Wombleish · 15/10/2019 19:59

The veggie Atora suet is made with palm oil.

andannabegins · 15/10/2019 20:11

@Nowisthemonthofmaying I bought a kilo of coltfoot rock and liquorice rock off amazon the other day!! Some of it might make it into my mums Christmas present!

newroundhere · 15/10/2019 20:12

Bovril
Heinz Macaroni Cheese in a tin
Salad Cream

Can't live without any of the (much to DH's confusion)

DodgeRainClouds · 15/10/2019 20:13

Max Factor translucent face powder. Started using it as a teen and still using it in my late 30’s.

LBOCS2 · 15/10/2019 20:18

Loads of these...

Lard (for roast potatoes and pastry)
Washing powder in a box
Gravy browning
Faggots
Ajax powder for cleaning
Brillo pads
Corned beef in a tin

I'm sure there were more but I can't remember them!

Youreterriblemuriel99 · 15/10/2019 20:25

Laundry soap bar for stains
Blancmange
Custard powder

Branster · 15/10/2019 20:28

I’ve never stopped buying soap bars. Shower gels or hand wash gel don’t give me that proper clean feeling.
Barkeepers Friend to clean my oven and stubborn stains on stainless steel heavy duty pans.

Crawley65 · 15/10/2019 20:29

Powdered blamanche.

historysock · 15/10/2019 20:29

Bovril.
Nothing better on a cold day as a drink, but I was raised on it as a spread on toast. My siblings and I are yet to meet anyone else that has this as standard. We love it.
We've all got the same vintage Bovril poster (copies) up in our kitchens.
