Something you didn’t know that blew your mind

My Dd1 had ALL 3 years ago and needed a stem cell transplant.
We knew that her DNA would change and she would have the same DNA as her donor.
However, she’s just spent 8 days in hospital with an infection that turned into pleurisy and suspected sepsis. (Thanks to the selfish bastard who thought going to see an immuno compromised person whilst ill was nothing to worry about)
What we didn’t know was that her blood group has changed, she was O positive, she’s now O negative! The nurse showed us her records where it says “After X date (date of her transplant) ALL blood products MUST be O neg”.
Shock
Science and medicine is amazing.
Is there anything you’ve learned that blew your mind?

Wow. That’s fascinating. So with her DNA being different has she changed dramatically or at all in appearance.
This has the potential to be an excellent thread. It’d be a-shame for it to disappear off the radar. I’ll give it a few bumps.

An amazing thing I found out about was chimerism all about DNA. It’s too long winded for me to write it all down.
She gave birth to her children conceived spontaneously. When she had split up from her partner and applied for welfare. She had to take a DNA test to prove she was her children’s mother. Shockingly she failed the Test. They did the test again and it still said. She wasn’t their mother. Even though like I say she had conceived carried them and given birth.
Their dad was tested and he indeed was the father, so It wasn’t a case that they had been switched at birth and that certainly wouldn’t happen with all 3 children, would it.
It turned out she had Chimerism. In the womb she was actually a twin and she absorbed her twin.
Her children rather than picking up her DNA they picked up her twins DNA. Therefore biological she is actually her children’s auntie.

Not quite on the scale of yours but.... the numbers on the toaster are not heart settings, they are minutes! 🤯

*heat settings! 🤦🏼‍♀️

HotChocolateLover · 11/10/2019 09:26

@Awwlookatmybabyspider Wow! I’ve not got anything as good at that. Going to tell DH that later.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/10/2019 09:26

WhAts ALL, btw.

StealthPolarBear · 11/10/2019 09:29

Leukemia
Like this thread, I'm amazed your daughter's blood group changed!

Mrsmummy90 · 11/10/2019 09:30

A friend of mine had multiple transplants when she had leukaemia and her blood type changed as well! I never knew it could happen until she told me. It really is fascinating.

Mine is rather silly but I found out that puffer fish inflate with water - not air 😂 why I thought they'd get air underwater is beyond me lol

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/10/2019 09:35

Flamingos aren’t actually pink, they’re white.
It’s the food they eat that makes them turn pink.

StealthPolarBear · 11/10/2019 09:37

Ah yes that puffer fish thing was stupidity on your part. None of us thought the same and have also had a light bulb moment. Oh not at all...

NotSoThinLizzy · 11/10/2019 09:40

Hippo milk is pink 😊

Rickytickytembo · 11/10/2019 09:55

Wow, I also just assumed pufferfish filled up with air! Clearly never really stopped to think about it.

Mine is not science related, but....there are more CEOs of Australian companies listed on the ASX (Aus stock exchange) called Andrew than there are women CEOs.

That figure always sticks in mind as it really sums up the inequality Angry

Best wishes to your daughter OP.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/10/2019 10:00

Indeed love to your daughter.

Ducklings don’t naturally know how to swim. Their mummy has to teach them.

HollowTalk · 11/10/2019 10:03

Best wishes to your daughter, OP. I'm sure I remember reading something similar to this in a thriller, where the blood tested differently from skin/hair because of a transplant (I think - my memory's rubbish.)

Downunderduchess · 11/10/2019 10:38

Mind is rather lame but I didn't realise if you have short(er) hair it's called pig tails (when tied up) and a pony tail when the hair is longer.

Downunderduchess · 11/10/2019 10:39

*Mine not mind

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/10/2019 10:43

That if you put cheese on cream crackers and microwave them, the cheese melts but the crackers stay room temperature

Windydaysuponus · 11/10/2019 10:43

I never knew a penis could be a grower or a shower until I met dh at 42!!

multivac · 11/10/2019 10:45

That thing about the toaster is complete nonsense, sorry.

StealthPolarBear · 11/10/2019 10:51

Windydaysuponus Erm what? Do I want to know?

AthollPlace · 11/10/2019 10:52

Has her blood type actually changed? Or does she just need O negative because it’s a universal donor type?

Aposterhasnoname · 11/10/2019 10:57

I never knew a penis could be a grower or a shower until

Could someone translate please?

Nottobesoldseparately · 11/10/2019 10:59

downunder
I thought pigtails were plaits and ponytails loose regardless of length?

My never knew that, I always thought reservoirs were for storing water for drinking, sewage treatment etc. However some of them are used to simply store water to refill canals after locks have been used!

AthollPlace · 11/10/2019 11:01

I didn't realise if you have short(er) hair it's called pig tails (when tied up) and a pony tail when the hair is longer

I don’t think that’s right? A pony tail is one bunch of hair and pig tails are two bunches of hair on either side.

Skyejuly · 11/10/2019 11:06

My toaster is definitely in minutes!
