Something you didn’t know that blew your mind

My Dd1 had ALL 3 years ago and needed a stem cell transplant.
We knew that her DNA would change and she would have the same DNA as her donor.
However, she’s just spent 8 days in hospital with an infection that turned into pleurisy and suspected sepsis. (Thanks to the selfish bastard who thought going to see an immuno compromised person whilst ill was nothing to worry about)
What we didn’t know was that her blood group has changed, she was O positive, she’s now O negative! The nurse showed us her records where it says “After X date (date of her transplant) ALL blood products MUST be O neg”.
Shock
Science and medicine is amazing.
Is there anything you’ve learned that blew your mind?

@meridaofthefabulousredhair
Mate, he was pulling your leg. A rainbow is a prism effect, which is a phenomena that is explained by physics and can be replicated quite easily on a smaller scale. In fact, at our secondary school we played around with them for several lessons.

WeDidNotChangeTheLocks · 12/10/2019 08:41

@GenuineKlatchianPottery are you sure the blood types actually changed? O negative blood is known as the universal donor which means anyone of any blood type can receive it. That could be why the notes suggest she can only have O negative blood now.

I’ve seen the effect that @meridaofthefabulousredhair’s son described when caught in a snow flurry on a sunny day in snow covered mountains. The sun reflecting off the lying snow and hundreds of tiny falling snowflakes made thousands and thousands of tiny falling rainbows. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

Here is evidence that it is possible to drive a car through rainbow.

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 12/10/2019 09:39

So many interesting things to read.
To those who asked. Yes, DD is now Oneg, she was previously Opos. I queried it when they brought in the blood (we’ve lost count of how many blood/platelets/plasma transfusions she’s had). The nurse explained that she’s now Oneg.

The 'pupil' of the eye is from the Latin pupilla, 'little doll', because we see a tiny reflection of ourselves when we look into another person's eyes.

Saw that on Susie Dent's twitter years ago and it has stayed with me!

Genuinely interesting this one

Love that! And the one about vegan wine.
Well I’ve learnt something today! Grin

Skimmed milk isn’t white, it’s clear/blue. It has product added to make it white. Not dissimilar to what they use to coat ibuprofen etc.

wanderings · 12/10/2019 12:28

@mammabearandhercubs I heard about bees stinging other bees; the first queen bee to emerge stings the others and kills them, to establish herself as head of the colony. All very contrary to the BFG’s (Roald Dahl’s) insistence that “humans are the only animals that kill their own kind”.

Slappadabass · 12/10/2019 12:32

@RogersVideo Mind blown, I can't think in pictures, I thought that was just the norm. Just googled it and apparently notShock

As the long-time owner of a penis, I was unaware of this grower / show-er distinction, so I've learnt something. (No, I'm not telling you which I am Blush ). I suppose in my defence, in my 49 years, I've only seen the one penis become erect. Confused

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 12/10/2019 13:15

I knew the chimera thing (it was a storyline on CSI at one point). I also read a book where following some sort of transplant the character had different DNA in their saliva and their blood / sperm, and nearly got away with their crimes because of it.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/10/2019 13:27

@meridaofthefabulousredhair this explains why you can’t reach a rainbow people.howstuffworks.com/end-of-rainbow.htm so someone else can pass through your rainbow but you can’t reach your own

MissLadyM Lake Bassenthwaite is the only bloody lake in the Lake District because the rest are named Tarn or Mere etc as others have said.

DadDadDad · 12/10/2019 13:44

Thing is, if you look up tarn or mere, they are defined to be types of lakes. So there are plenty of lakes in the Lake District even if only one has "Lake" in its name - although I read that Windermere is sometimes called Lake Windermere to distinguish it from the town of the same name.

OMGshefoundmeout · 12/10/2019 13:52

The skimmed milk thing is interesting. I remember when I was little and the milkman came round on his float. He’d always have a couple of bottles of skimmed milk for people on special diets and they were noticeably blue-tinged. I thought I had imagined it as it’s all I drink now and it no longer looks blue n

MsChatterbox · 12/10/2019 16:52

It's called blue riband not blue ribbon!!

BalloonSlayer · 12/10/2019 17:24

Not as interesting as everyone else's but have had my mind blown today watching an old episode of Bake Off.

They had to make a "hand raised, chicken, pork and apricot pie." I was like huh? How are they all going to do that?

I genuinely believed that a hand-raised chicken and pork pie meant that you had raised the chicken and pig yourself from when they were a chick and piglet respectively, tenderly caring for them and making sure they ate the right diet etc etc . . . till you had them slaughtered and turned into a pie.

You could have knocked me down with a feather when I learned that the hand raised bit just means something you do with the sodding pastry!

Titanium dioxide?

SunshineAngel · 12/10/2019 19:47

@Windydaysuponus I had to tell my 88yo grandmother what was meant by "a grower not a shower" when my brother and DP had a drunken conversation at the Christmas family gathering last year. Why I always get tasked with the explanations is beyond me!

sueelleker · 12/10/2019 20:25

wanderings; I believe the drones are killed at the end of the summer as well.

I just found out that in northern China the government control all the central heating in homes. So it decides when to switch it on which is mid November to March and all homes are kept at the same temp of 20 degrees. Southern China had no central heating at all.
