Something you didn’t know that blew your mind

My Dd1 had ALL 3 years ago and needed a stem cell transplant.
We knew that her DNA would change and she would have the same DNA as her donor.
However, she’s just spent 8 days in hospital with an infection that turned into pleurisy and suspected sepsis. (Thanks to the selfish bastard who thought going to see an immuno compromised person whilst ill was nothing to worry about)
What we didn’t know was that her blood group has changed, she was O positive, she’s now O negative! The nurse showed us her records where it says “After X date (date of her transplant) ALL blood products MUST be O neg”.
Shock
Science and medicine is amazing.
Is there anything you’ve learned that blew your mind?

I know the dinosaur one in a slightly different and even more mind blowing form: Tyrannosaurus Rex lived closer to the iPhone than to Stegosaurus.

Surely that depends on weather condoms are used or not?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/10/2019 15:51

Of course Hedges. Like I say though. I don’t know how true it is either

Some people cannot think in pictures - it's called aphantasia.

And there's quite a few of us on MN!

LighteningRidge · 11/10/2019 16:08

In pregnancy your blood can also change. That's why they test throughout not only to check iron levels etc but also to check you are still the same type as when you started. I can't remember if it is only the rhesus status or type too but my midwife mentioned it and I just thought it was amazing. The body is a wonderful thing.

The retaining DNA from a Male partner, how does that work exactly? Like I know how it gets there but the rest after that

The Middle East: The non-oil revenues of the Gulf states add up to less than the GDP of Finland.

My embarrassing thing is that I was 40 before I realised that turning the number up on the toaster doesn’t make it hotter, it makes it cook for longer Blush.

DH couldn’t stop laughing when he heard.

Fog lights.

My husband was watching a YouTube video of someone in America reviewing a car and them going on about front fog lights.

I was a bit Confused as I said surely all cars have super-duper bright lights on the front so the driver can see what's ahead of them a bit more clearly when driving in fog.

Apparently not.

What's standard in cars is a rear fog light so that you can be seen by the car behind you. (Although apparently some cars do come with super-duper bright lights at the front.)

Mind blown.

(I'm not a driver BTW...)

A female is born with all of her eggs she ever produces in her life fully formed. So if a mum to be is carrying a daughter, she is also carrying the eggs which will become her grandchildren.

The egg which became my DD was inside my DM when she was pregnant with me. And if my DD has kids, the eggs which make them were inside me.

I think about this when I see my DD and DM together.

@GenuineKlatchianPottery

ALL survivor here!

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Got it 10 years ago. Not the only Mumsnetter either. The treatment involved the most toxic chemo, followed a split-second later with the antidote to stop me from dying. It is that split second that counts. Everytime I had to crawl out of those days.

Rats' antibodies, horses' too. All these things and more kept us alive. Yes I am a chimera. My mind and heart are the same, but sometimes the body does its own thing.

I can feel vibrations across the floor wherever I am. Closing my eyes I can count the people walking around me at different degrees. Now I can look into a person's eyes and tell what they are really thinking. Could not do that before, always unsure, but now I know.

There is only one lake in the Lake District

Barnowl25 · 11/10/2019 20:28

That the N and S on the M25 isn't the direction you are heading but whether you are South or North of the river. Found out this year which makes it much less confusing when leaving Heathrow and heading for home.

I drive 2 cars and the petrol cap is on different sides on each and I can never remember which is which. I recently found out that next to the symbol of the petrol pump on the dashboard is a little arrow to show which side the cap is! Couldn’t believe I’ve never known this before

StarbucksSmarterSister · 11/10/2019 20:45

A friend of mine had multiple transplants when she had leukaemia and her blood type changed as well

This happened to my Dad as well.

That pouring expired milk down the sink is a crime for businesses.

Why only businesses I don't know.

captainprincess · 11/10/2019 20:51

@Jantolee not on my car Grin

Aberhonddu · 11/10/2019 20:53

Are there people that think in pictures? I don't see pictures at all.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/10/2019 20:53

That English people pronounce the word 'proven' as 'prooven'.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 11/10/2019 20:55

Instead of like 'woven' as in the Scottish alternative verdict

Not Proven
