Have you put your heating on yet?

I think this is the first year that I've managed not to have the heating on during the summer at some point. I live in the north west and June is often pretty chilly at times. This last week has been pretty cold but I've been determined to stick it out as is only cold when we first get up and if I'm home alone during the day. I just put my dressing gown and socks on and I'm fine. I live with my 3 dc so no one to argue with over the heating which is great but I'm conscious of the financial and environmental impact of central heating and trying to cut down. Won reduced my payments from £150 a month to £139 and I don't want it to increase again.

Is yours on yet? If so, where abouts in the UK do you live?

Mine is never actually off. The heating will come on at specified times if the temperature in the house drops below 18 degrees regardless of the time of year. This morning was the first time I noticed warm radiators since before the summer.

VictoriaBun · 02/10/2019 20:03

Live North West ( think 30 miles from Scottish borders)
Not had heating on yet, but have put on an oil filled radiator on this evening a bit was showing as 14.5° where I'm sat . Brrrr.

Catquest1 · 02/10/2019 20:11

Its been lovely today here (east mids) but ive noticed a nip in the air morning and night. Thermostat is still saying 18 degs so still mot turned heating on.

I may light the fire though as log delivery came today Grin

GiantKitten · 02/10/2019 20:46

IHaveBrilloHair
No, no I haven't.
I let the calendar dictate my heating use, rather than the temperature.

What happens if you get a mild spell in December or February? You keep the heating on because of the calendar? Confused

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/10/2019 21:20

I was being sarcastic!

GiantKitten · 02/10/2019 21:22

Oh sorry Grin

Asdf12345 · 02/10/2019 21:25

No heating yet here. I did light the fire this evening for the first time since spring though.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 02/10/2019 21:27

I gave in and stuck it on for an hour tonight as the top floor was very cold and my nose was cold sat in the living room. If my nose is cold, then it's cold. Most of the radiators had been turned off at the thermostat when it started getting warmer and we only needed a few on.

Dd is on the ground floor in a north facing room. I was wondering about getting her an electric blanket-does anyone recommend one? I always feared them setting the bed on fire as I remember news stories when I was little of that happening. I had a fleecy undersheet for the winter months as a child and a plug in radiator as we had no central heating. We had fires though. No fires in this house Sad

Not yet. We have blankets on the sofas for wrapping up, lots of warm clothes and heated airers for when we really can't dry outside. I really feel the cold but I have v good thermals and decent hats, gloves and socks. The children and dh are still in t-shirts so it's not time yet. As soon as they feel cold, it'll go on. Usually late October and set to 18 but only in the morning and 90 minutes after school. Never heat up bedrooms either.

MrsTumbletap · 02/10/2019 21:34

We always wait until November.

Currently sitting with a blanket over my lap and perfectly cozy.

ShowOfHands · 02/10/2019 21:35

Electric blankets are really safe now. Our dc have always had them.

BishopFrownofStThigh · 02/10/2019 21:45

Just put an extra blanket on.

managedmis · 03/10/2019 00:56

Supposed to get down to 3 degrees tonight

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 03/10/2019 02:06

I am awake at 2am because I woke up freezing to the bone. That's after having had the heating on in the evening. I am not sure how I will get through winter Smile. Now I'm bed in two hoodies, two duvets and a hot water bottle.

Aprillygirl · 03/10/2019 02:54

Still got the windows open most of the day and wearing a T-shirt around the house here in the South East. I seldom have my heating on before November and usually only for an hour in the morning then.

RingtheBells · 03/10/2019 05:07

I would get an electric blanket OP as long as you get a recognised make it will be fine, Slumberdown, Deamland, Silentnight etc. Argos have a lot. I've used one for years, the dangerous ones were old ones which people kept for years.

Pollydocket · 03/10/2019 05:42

OP mine have flanalette sheets, duvets and hot water bottles. They also have the dunelm teddy bear fleece mattress toppers, which are divine.
Plus nice warm PJs.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/10/2019 06:01

Not yet, but it was chilly last night so I had a blanket over me on the sofa. I like to try and hold off until mid October at least. We’re also still sleeping with the thin summer quilt!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 03/10/2019 07:31

Frost on the garage roofs this morning and radiator was warm when I got up! It didn’t come on yesterday evening though.

Preggosaurus9 · 03/10/2019 07:33

Ours is on all year round too but only actually fires up when temp drops below a specific number. Usually set to 18. Whacked it up to 20 yesterday as cold winds always seem to suck the heat out.

For those on tight budget, it's more effective to have all rads going constantly at a low heat level than to have a blast once in a day. It takes more energy to bring the house up to temp than it does to maintain it at a temp.

Our thermostat is a godsend, pay less on gas as it's never having to bring the house up from cold and don't have to constantly go fiddle with the timer or the boiler.

Crimson72 · 03/10/2019 08:32

I’m in London and have had mine of a bit. Temperatures are down to single figures at night now and I live in an old and draughty house!

Crimson72 · 03/10/2019 08:33
  • ON a bit!
ConFusion360 · 03/10/2019 10:47

It was 2 degrees this morning.

" According to experts at the Energy Saving Trust, as well as British Gas, the idea it's cheaper to leave the heating on low all day is a myth. They're clear that having the heating on only when you need it is, in the long run, the best way to save energy, and therefore money. "

Just turned it on today, mostly because my mum is visiting and shivering!

South East of England.
