I’m taking my stepdaughters stepson out to tea later and two of his friends a brother and sister.

They are called Sid(ney) and Nancy!

My step daughter told me this with a straight face but given that she is a generation down from me aren’t the names rather ‘obvious’?!

I don't get it. Confused They are both perfectly nice names.

Haworthia · 27/09/2019 14:38

It’s a pop culture reference that’s only recognisable by the over 40s (or close to 40) I think!

MrsDimmond · 27/09/2019 14:40

Oh no, punk is now ancient history !

You have to be a certain age to realise the significance of Sid and Nancy. Sid Viscious was in the 70’s punk band The Sex Pistols. His girlfrined was Nancy Spungeon. She died from a stab wound in a hotel. He was suspected of stabbing her. Not sure of the outcome but Google will tell you.
I wouldn’t have used those names for siblings!

Twospaniels · 27/09/2019 14:42

I know of someone with twin boys called Ronnie and Reggie. She claims she didn’t know the significance of this pairing, but I would have thought someone older would have enlightened her when she announced the babies names!

Enko · 27/09/2019 14:43

I am apparently I'd the right age but I has a big ??? For this never knew. They are nice enough names together imo

Thiswayorthatway · 27/09/2019 14:43

I am mid 40's and I know of Sid Vicious and the allegations, but it would never occur to me not to use those names for siblings though.

MrsDimmond · 27/09/2019 14:44

I've also met Ronnie and Reggie twins!

MrsDimmond · 27/09/2019 14:50

I think it's because there was a film titled Sid and Nancy that they are stuck as a pair of names for some of us.

TawnyPippit · 27/09/2019 14:53

My DHs grandparents were called Sid and Nancy - I guess neither of them are particularly unusual Victorian names, but it used to make him snigger.

We came across B/G twins called Taylor and Tyler, which boggled me somewhat

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/09/2019 14:54

I'm in my 40s and didn't get the connection. I've met a Charlie and Lola before. I'd probably avoid Bonnie and Clyde.

youngestisapsycho · 27/09/2019 14:54

My friend had a Sid and would have called secon child Nancy if a girl... luckily it was a boy. Someone I know has sons called Bert and Ernie!

SpoonBlender · 27/09/2019 14:58

I pointed out to a friend that they'd named their twins Edward and William, a year after Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure had come out.

Fortunately no negative connotations or even anything notable in the way of playground jeering, and they're lovely lads now. Just in time for the new sequal!

YaySeptember · 27/09/2019 15:05

I once knew some twins whose names were April and May. Another pair of siblings were Jacob and Robert and another were Harley and David.

EmAreSea · 27/09/2019 15:10

There were two guys I used to know whose first names were Clark and Kent...

Crunchymum · 27/09/2019 15:21

@EmAreSea

Were the two guys you used to know where brothers?

@YaySeptember

Sorry I don't get the Jacon Robert thing?

Crunchymum · 27/09/2019 15:21
  • Jacob / Robert.
DianaBlythe · 27/09/2019 15:24

There are siblings Jane and Janet in my family. They are different names but only one letter different! I know they had 5 children but still think they could have gone for something else!

I know Ronnie and Reggie cat siblings but not people!

CheerfulMuddler · 27/09/2019 15:32

I know someone with kids called Fred and George. Apparently she just went "Oh those names sound nice together" and didn't click why until after they'd announced the name.
She and her husband call them "the Weasleys", but I think she'd have called DS 2 something else if she'd realised.

Charlesandfred · 27/09/2019 15:39

There were twins in my son's baby group called Marcus (Marc) and Spencer 😂

Orangecake123 · 27/09/2019 15:42

My mother's name is Amina. Her sister's name is Samina.

Hmm
GeorgiaGirl52 · 27/09/2019 15:47

I know several pairs of brothers named Harley and Davidson.
Also one set of siblings who are Max and Ruby. (It was intentional choice of the mother because she likes bunnies and watched the show as a child!)

quety · 27/09/2019 15:53

I thought it was going to be a thread on when people deliberately choose a sibling's name based on whether it'll 'go' with the first.

Such, as "I chose Emily as it goes really well with Jack". No one ever asks your sibling's names when you're older (or otherwise). Why bother? Does it look better in a Xmas card? Who cares. I don't get it.

MrsDimmond · 27/09/2019 15:54

I met a couple who named their daughter Katie Morag! I mean I liked the books and the tv programme but ....

aintnutinchanged · 27/09/2019 16:30

@Crunchymum Jacob and Robert Marley haunted Scrooge 😂
