Matching sibling names

I’m taking my stepdaughters stepson out to tea later and two of his friends a brother and sister.

They are called Sid(ney) and Nancy!

My step daughter told me this with a straight face but given that she is a generation down from me aren’t the names rather ‘obvious’?!

@Crunchymum yes, forgot to mention that!

36degrees · 27/09/2019 23:00

I know siblings named Liz and Phil, deliberately.

BigusBumus · 27/09/2019 23:07

A v posh friend of mine has young children called Florence and fred. Completely oblivious to the Tesco clothing brand.

My husband has a mate with grown up twins called Chas and Dave. 😂

I've got no idea about Katie Morag or Bert and Ernie. Fred and George wouldn't mean anything to me either. Sid and Nancy definitely though. I know a Ben and Holly, but they are older than the TV programme.

Soola · 28/09/2019 01:12

Well, they were delightful children and not remotely punk rocker-like!

ha ha, that'd make me raise an eyebrow! but I'm 49.

whiteroseredrose · 28/09/2019 01:18

DD went to school with a Sara who had sisters called Zara and Zahara.

RoxytheRexy · 28/09/2019 08:07

I have a Nancy and my best friend has a Sid. We giggle about sometimes

RickOShay · 28/09/2019 08:15

@BigusBumus*. I think I might know your friend Grin, does her last name begin with A?

Katinski · 28/09/2019 08:21

This reminds me of two sisters named Flavia and Lavinia. Nice enough names, but given to two very 'entitled' and disruptive children, so when the invites for childrens parties went out, we'd routinely ask each other "do you know if Flav and Lav are going?"

BigusBumus · 30/09/2019 23:37

RickOShay, I don't know if her name once was an A but it's not now.

MuseumOfYou · 01/10/2019 07:26

Someone locally has called their DD's Lola and Lyla. Nothing wrong with either but a bit of a mindfuck together?

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 01/10/2019 07:36

I knew a Michaela who had a brother only a year older called Michael.

x2boys · 01/10/2019 09:25

I'm 46 and I didn't get it at first ,I have heard of Sid and Nancy of course but Punk was a bit before my time, My Grandad,s ( so no relation to each other ) were Bill and Ben Grin

HotChocolateLover · 01/10/2019 09:32

I know someone who called their twins Jack and Daniel 🤦‍♀️

x2boys · 01/10/2019 09:33

When people do thread such as will Emily go with Jack @quety I always assume it's more to do with the type of name for example, if you have a James and a Matthew and then called a third sibling Lexie -May they are totally different kind of names to.their sibling .

MeganTheVegan · 01/10/2019 09:38

I know a woman whose husband is called Denis. Their 3 daughters are called:

Denise
Niselle
Deniselle.

NearlyGranny · 01/10/2019 09:47

People used to peer under the pram hoods and ask what we'd named our b/g twins. OH used to tell them Kylie and Jason. That dates it! Before they were born we got questions about whether we planned to choose biblical names (DH and I randomly have OT names, like Ruth and Daniel, but not) and DH would say top of the list were Salome and Herod.

Needless to say they were not given any of those names, nor were they given names that sounded similar when called across a stubble field or playground!

8misskitty8 · 01/10/2019 10:02

I taught siblings a few years apart called Rosie and Jim. The tv series had been out a few years and was being regularly repeated at the time.
Mum said that she thought the names sounded nice together and hadn’t realised.

Soola · 01/10/2019 10:13

@MeganTheVegan in the 1970s we had a family nearby with two children close in age called Daniel and Danielle.

I remember my mother throwing me ‘the look’ when I started questioning the lady why the names were so similar!

I'm actually surprised there aren't more siblings called Antony and Declan!

I once worked with a girl called Melanie,
Her sister was called Melissa.

And a friends niece called her twins Eleanor and Samuel and didn't realise until to late what would happen!

amusedbush · 01/10/2019 11:33

I'm 29 and get the Sid and Nancy reference!

I pointed out to a friend that they'd named their twins Edward and William, a year after Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure had come out.

I know someone whose young kids are called Bill and Ted (well, William and Teddie) Grin

gabsdot · 01/10/2019 11:39

There is a set of BG twins around here called Keanu and Trinity.
You'll only get that if you're a Matrix fan.

MrsDimmond · 01/10/2019 12:01

Not siblings but I worked with a woman called Janet whose husband was called John. Again, only amusing to those of us over a certain age Grin

FishCanFly · 01/10/2019 12:30

I don't like when people give names of literally lovers for siblings, a.k.a. Romeo & Juliet. It's weird Confused
Also when names sound almost the same, like Jack and Jake
