Anyone else fine Eye colour genetics fascinating?

Just randomly thinking about eye colours and the genetics behind them tonight. (I find genetics fascinating). What eye colour do you, your partner and children have? Anyone have rare occurrences ie: two brown eye parents having blue eyes child or 2 different coloured eyes etc.

I have blue eyes, DH has green eyes that occasionally look a bit orange/light brown depending on lighting. DD has Grey eyes - they look blueish most of the time, grey when she wears dark clothes or at night and greenish in photos. Out of all our eye colours I like DD’s the best as they look particularly striking when they are ‘grey’.

I dont have kids yet but my mums eyes are brown, dads are grey, mine are blue and my sisters are green. It is very interesting. We're all dark haired and 3 of us very pale but my mum is slightly more olive skinned.

Dad - blue
Mum - brown
Sister - brown
Me - blue
DH - brown
DS1 - blue
DS2 - brown
DD- blue

I find it fascinating too! I have 2 blue eyed parents and my sisters and I all have blue. Both my kids are blue eyed too as they have 2 blue eyed parents and I have 3 blue eyed nephews. Next to no variation in our family, aside from subtle differences in the shade of blue.

My mum is one of 5 sisters who all had brown eyes except her. Her mum had brown eyes and her dad blue. All her nieces have brown eyes except one, who we think got the blue eyed gene from my mums dad. Interestingly, my cousins baby has very blue eyes, despite having 2 brown eyes parents and 2 brown eyed grandparents.

Thought provoking post OP!

I'm fascinated by this too.

My eyes are browny/green, DH's are dark green. One DC has grey/blue eyes with a gold centre, another has blue/grey with a gold centre. Middle DC's eyes are an interesting mixture of brown, blue & gold.

I had four blue eyed grandparents so must carry the recessive gene for blue eyes, and there are blue eyes in DH's family too, which explains the blue eyes that have come out in our DC.

Our grey/blue eyed DC has the same colour as my grandmother, which is a lovely link between them three generations apart.

DH and I both have greeny brown eyes. Both of our children have bright blue eyes. Oldest DS have gone a more steely grey blue now.

Weird eh

I have blue eyes : both parents have brown eyes, my granddad had 'my' eyes

Both my kids have blue eyes, DH has blue eyes too

64sNewName · 27/09/2019 00:29

I have what my mum calls hazel eyes (I’d say they’re just a boring sort of brown). My mum’s are brown, and my dad’s are blue-grey.

XDP is blue-eyed and so is everyone in his family.

Both our dc have blue eyes.

Teddybear45 · 27/09/2019 00:39

I am Indian - brown and black (dark grey) coloured eyes run in the family as do blue and green. Surprisingly all the half-white members of my family have brown eyes - the unusual colours only seem to come out when we marry Afghans / Pakistanis and other Indians.

passionfruit11 · 27/09/2019 00:41

I have green and DH has dark brown. DS has dark brown yet DD has very light blue! We are also all olive skinned and dark whereas she has pinky pale skin and very blonde hair Hmm

3littlemonkeys82 · 27/09/2019 00:44

My Dad had brown eyes, my Mom has green eyes...
I have 1 blue eye, 1 green eye!
Both DD have blue and DD has brown like my DP

savingshoes · 27/09/2019 00:53

Same - very interested to learn and understand more!

Teddybear45 so jealous of your family's eye colours! Lol

I heard somewhere that blue eyes are very new/original seen as a mutation. Not sure if it's reality

NorthEndGal · 27/09/2019 00:55

My eyes are grey (M green, F blue), DH has blue/green eyes(M dark hazel, F blue), DD (22)has green eyes and DS (20) has deep blue

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 27/09/2019 00:57

My dad has pale blue eyes, mum has darker blue with a hint of green. Sister 1 medium blue, sister 2 green, brother pale blue and me, dark brown. Maternal grandparents hazel and blue paternal grandparents light blue and grey.

fatulousatforty · 27/09/2019 00:59

I have brown eyes
Dp has brown eyes
Dd1 (27) has brown eyes
Dd2 (22) has a green left eye and brown right eye

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 27/09/2019 00:59

Oh, and my eldest child has dark brown, middle has dark blue and youngest has crazy blue/ grey/ green eyes, iv never seen eyes like his before- their fathers eyes are blue.

QueenofPain · 27/09/2019 01:03

Dad - blue.
Mum - hazel brown.
Me - Green.

Recently had the 23 and Me genetic test thing done and you can download your raw data and upload into other genetic sites, was told they predict from my DNA that i’m most likely blue eyed and fair straight haired, also said i’m likely pale skinned. My hair is actually black, thick, curly and my eyes are green, i’m olive skinned.

pikapikachu · 27/09/2019 01:04

Ex and I have brown eyes.
Our 3 children have blue, green and brown eyes.

NotMeNoNo · 27/09/2019 01:05

My DC are adopted and both have striking blue eyes (as does their birth mum) . My eyes are brown, when they were small a stranger looked at them in the buggy and then at me and said how unusual they have blue eyes and you don't. I just mumbled something, I felt like she'd seen right through us! But is it an impossible combination?

DippyAvocado · 27/09/2019 01:17

I have blue eyes - a very bright blue. DM has brown eyes, DF grey and DB Hazel so we run quite a spectrum.

My DH has brown eyes but all his three children - my two DC and my DSC have blue eyes.

One of my DC has a heterochromia. Her eyes are blue but there is a brown patch in one of them. We don't have any family history of this so I have often wondered if it is chimerism. I had some quite heavy bleeding very early in my pregnancy with her and thought it's possible I may have miscarried a twin.

OkPedro · 27/09/2019 01:22

Hazel is an eye colour though pp..

I have hazel eyes, exdp has hazel, dd has the most unusual mix of grey and hazel.. really beautiful. Ds has those chocolate brown eyes that I envy.. My Mam had blue eyes, my Dad brown. I have six siblings. I have hazel..four have brown and two have blue

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 27/09/2019 01:23

I find eye colour so fascinating, especially because we still don't know for sure how it is determined!
I'm childless/childfree, but my entire family has brown eyes. Heck, we all look terribly alike on DM's side, I often think back to Game of Thrones and think "the seed (from my grandfather) is strong".

As for someone above who asked, seeing how eye colour doesn't follow Mendel's peas model, you can totally have a blue eyed child from two brown eyed parents, as long as you have the genes necessary to make it happen (or your child has a mutation that makes them blue).

I remember learning about eye development in embryos early this year; the whole subject is fascinating. If I recall correctly, scientists knew at least four genes that contributed to eye colour, so it's definitely not as simple as drawing a Punnett Square.

Oh! If you are generally interested in classical inheritance, google Mendelian Extensions. I miss the days those were the only thing I had to learn, turns out I hate molecular genetics.

Boohooyouho · 27/09/2019 01:25

We have something similar in that I have green and my Husband has blue eyes. Our adopted son has the most gorgeous chocolate brown eyes while his sisters both have bright blue eyes. I’m told that brown eyes from two pale eyes parents would be very unusual but not impossible. I fear it gives us away as not being genetically related.

Lulubelle15 · 27/09/2019 01:26

I find this sort of thing very interesting. I have brown eyes and my husband has rather unusual hazel/ amber coloured eyes that sometimes look green. We have 2 boys and our oldest have dark brown eyes like mine and our youngest has green eyes which sometimes seem like a blue/grey colour.

benadrylcucumberpatch · 27/09/2019 01:33

Both my parents have grey eyes and both me and my brother have green eyes, all my grandparents had either blue or brown eyes! Baffling!
