Anyone else fine Eye colour genetics fascinating?

Just randomly thinking about eye colours and the genetics behind them tonight. (I find genetics fascinating). What eye colour do you, your partner and children have? Anyone have rare occurrences ie: two brown eye parents having blue eyes child or 2 different coloured eyes etc.

I have blue eyes, DH has green eyes that occasionally look a bit orange/light brown depending on lighting. DD has Grey eyes - they look blueish most of the time, grey when she wears dark clothes or at night and greenish in photos. Out of all our eye colours I like DD’s the best as they look particularly striking when they are ‘grey’.

Yes! It always amazes me with my 3 DC.
Eldest DD has the darkest brown eyes ever. DS has the brightest blue eyes, and youngest DD also has blue eyes.

However they all look identical, exact same colour hair, skin etc. Just DD threw out dark eyes while DS and other DD have blue.

I have blue and DH brown.

I always think if we had another DS, he would have brown eyes Smile

AlunWynsKnee · 27/09/2019 13:59

My DF and I have identical blue eyes. Everyone else has some variation between brown and hazel. I'm hoping both dc have the genes required to pop up a blue eyed dc. It feels like the last of that genetic bit of heritage.

yumscrumfatbum · 27/09/2019 14:03

Dh has blue eyes, I have dark brown as do all my siblings. Three of my children have blue eyes, one green. Not a brown eye amoungst them!

Minai · 27/09/2019 14:44

Me and my entire family have blue eyes. Mine are very light blue with dark blue circle around the irises. I get a lot of comments on this as they are quite a noticeable feature.

DHs dad has green eyes, his mum has brown eyes. Dh’s are somewhere in the middle, hazel green and quite distinctive.

Both our ds have his exact shade of eyes. Love their eyes but would quite like to have had one with my eyes too!

BananaPlant · 27/09/2019 14:54

Me blue
DH brown
DC1 blue
DC2 were blue until they age of about 3 then they’ve turned green!

I’m secretly pleased they have blue eyes. GrinGrin

hipposarerad · 27/09/2019 15:00

Me: hazel
DP: blue
DS1: impossible to describe succinctly, but kind of greenish-hazelish-greyish
DS2: similar to DS1 but with a bigger dose of green.

Also, the DC don't look especially alike and you wouldn't think they were brothers, but DS1 looks like DP and DS2 looks like me.

Genetics are weird.

hipposarerad · 27/09/2019 15:02

... actually, if I were to be a bit pretentious about it, I would describe DS1's eye colour as 'kind of a beigy faun'

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 27/09/2019 15:14

Mine are pale blue/grey. Dh's are bright blue as our children's.

My dm has blue eyes, her eldest brother had brown eyes and her middle brother has one blue and one hazel. Both their parents had brown eyes. Her df died when she was small and her dm remarried someone with brown eyes. Both her half brothers have brown eyes as do their children.

Enko · 27/09/2019 15:46

I love this sort of stuff it fascinates me. I am Scandinavian descent light blue grey eyes
my mother's were blue
my fathers are grey.

Dh brown
Mil light blue
FIL hazel

Dd1 light grey with same pattern as my dad

Dd2 brown darker than fil and dhs

Ds brown with one eye being lighter than the other and half of this eye has a lighter patch his eye colour didnt change from blue until 2 so we thought he would be blue eyed

Dd3 she is almost 16 and honestly I cant describe her eyes they are blue brown green with some orange flecks in them. I have honestly never seen eyes like hers they change depending on her mood too it's like the orange becomes brighter when she is in a good mood and disappear when she is stressed. She tends to tell people green but more often than not do they disagree. I recall once her saying they are green to have 2 friend say at the same time friend 1 no they are blue
friend 2 no they are brown.

They are beautiful though that much we all agree on.

BearSoFair · 27/09/2019 15:53

I have hazel that look very green in bright sunlight.
DH has brown. DS1 hazel, DD and DS2 brown.

FIL had blue eyes, but one had a brown streak from the pupil right down to the edge of his iris. Segmental heterochromia (?) if I remember the name for it rightly!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 27/09/2019 16:45

Never actually answered your question .

I also find eye colour genetics interesting .
Put my immediate families earlier but we also had .
Gt Grandfather (maternal) Grey eyes
Grandfather Green/Hazel
Gt Grandfather (paternal) Blue eyes
Gt Grandmother (paternal) Blue eyes
Mum Green

Gt grandfather (Paternal) Not sure
Grandfather (Paternal) Brown
Gt Grandmother No idea
Grandmother Blue
Dad Brown

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 27/09/2019 16:45

Agggh my illness is making me type nonsense

First list are of course all on the Maternal side, not Paternal

CardiFree · 27/09/2019 16:50

I'm not sure thinking about it, if my eyes actually do change or it's people's perception.

Technically I'd say hazel but I was bullied a little bit starting secondary school and told I looked like an alien as my eyes were "yellow". When I cry they definitely look green.

So, I have no idea really.

Silversun83 · 27/09/2019 16:59

Both DH and I have dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.. DD has dark blonde hair and grey/blue/green eyes. DS has strawberry blonde hair and bright blue eyes.

We were expecting at least one dark haired brown eyed child! I think there was a 78% chance of brown eyed children.

sodrained · 27/09/2019 17:11

Me and my partner both have brown eyes our DD is green

Spied · 27/09/2019 17:17

DH dark brown
Me bluey turquoise
Dc1 khaki
Dc2 khaki

thaegumathteth · 27/09/2019 17:23

Dh has brown eyes
I have blue / green eyes
Dd (9) has brown eyes which were black at birth
Ds(12) has blue eyes until he was 9 and now they're green.

Gotakeahike · 27/09/2019 17:34

DH and I both have brown hair and brown eyes. We have 2 DCs that have white blond hair and blue eyes. We get loads of comments on the striking difference between us and the DCs. Both my DP and DP in law have blue eyes so we knew blue eyes was a possibility, but didn’t expect to get the blond/blue combo twice.

Grimbles · 27/09/2019 17:41

My side all have blue eyes - mum, dad, me siblings. On DHs side all the men have brown and all the women are blue.

Our DS has brown and DD looks to be sticking with blue so we are following DH family trend.

sleepyhead · 27/09/2019 17:41

My dad - blue
My mum - brown
Dh's dad - brown
Dh's mum - blue

Dh - brown
Me - blue
Ds1 - brown
Ds2 - blue

My dbro - brown
Dsil - blue
3 dns - 1 brown & 2 blue

tootiredforyourshit · 27/09/2019 17:47

I’m blue eyed, very ‘Scottish’ ie born with fair (reddish) with lots of freckles . Parents are both exactly the same, covered in freckles and blonde/gingerish hair .

Parental grandmother was ginger and full Scottish decent, maternal grandmother was darker but Scottish/Irish decent back to 1700s.

Sister is very dark haired, dark features and slightly olive skinned . Father never knew his dad and we strongly suspect sister has got her colouring from him !

stairway · 27/09/2019 18:02

My mum has brown my dad blue. I have blue and my brother has green.
My husband has brown eyes and all my 3 kids have exactly his eye colour. I was hoping for a bit of variation tbh.

Seashell80 · 27/09/2019 22:15

My brother is one of those rare exceptions in that he has dark brown eyes and both M and D have blue eyes( he is definitely theirs before anyone asks!😂) mine are more hazel and one is definitely more green so somewhere in between. Our maternal GF family all had dark brown eyes apart from 2 blue eyed children- one of which was my GF (out of about 10 children) so I suspect it is a throwback to this.

Clawdy · 27/09/2019 22:31

I have brown eyes, DH has blue eyes. Out of our four DC, only one has my brown eyes. Apparently that's quite unusual.

bruffin · 27/09/2019 22:31

My 2 sisters and myself all have dark brown eyes due to greek dad, however of the 4 children between us only one has brown eyes.
