Anyone else fine Eye colour genetics fascinating?

Just randomly thinking about eye colours and the genetics behind them tonight. (I find genetics fascinating). What eye colour do you, your partner and children have? Anyone have rare occurrences ie: two brown eye parents having blue eyes child or 2 different coloured eyes etc.

I have blue eyes, DH has green eyes that occasionally look a bit orange/light brown depending on lighting. DD has Grey eyes - they look blueish most of the time, grey when she wears dark clothes or at night and greenish in photos. Out of all our eye colours I like DD’s the best as they look particularly striking when they are ‘grey’.

Boohoo not quite the same but my eyes are blue/green and DH's are light brown whereas DS has the darkest chocolate brown. We don't know anyone else in the family with such dark eyes.

Biancadelrioisback · 27/09/2019 01:45

Both my mum and I have sectoral heterochromia iridis. My mum only has a small dot but I have one eye which is very clearly half blue and half brown.
My other eye is blue/grey.

Other than that, were a whole family of blue eyes, so is DH's. DS has striking blue eyes.

VelvetKitty · 27/09/2019 01:52

I have green eyes, ex DP bright blue and our DD has the exact same colour green as me. His mum has light brown and his dad blue and my mum is hazel and dad dark brown! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mothership4two · 27/09/2019 02:07

me - brown
dh - brown
ds1 - blue
ds2 - brown

MIL blue and FIL brown (both dark hair) yet their first 7 gc were blue eyed and blond (have a definite 'Hitler youth' look) then my ds2 broke the mould with brown eyes/hair. Next 2 gcs were brown/blonde and green/blonde. PIL have 8 gc, 2 per family, born boy then girl again except us with 2 boys. Sorry going off topic

Lofari · 27/09/2019 02:22

Dh mum and dad, both brown eyes.
Both his brothers.....brown eyes. His however are the most bright green I've seen. Our DD has the same shade as him, and our 2 DS have blue/green like me

Farfort1962 · 27/09/2019 02:37

All to do with dominant and recessive genes. Colours can skip generations and how colours come out depends on probability. I think I am right in saying that as in some blood groups certain permutations are not possible between parents and children, but I am not certain on that point.

Kittynapper · 27/09/2019 03:05

Do truly green eyes actually exist? I've never seen them.

This thread has reminded me of the Roma children being snatched from their homes by the authorities because it was believed that their eye colour proved the weren't their parents' offspring

A green eye.

Anyone else fine Eye colour genetics fascinating?
imaflutteringkite · 27/09/2019 04:07

Me and XP both have blue eyes:
DS1 brown eyes
Ds2 blue eyes
DD Blue eyes

sashh · 27/09/2019 04:10

My dad has green eyes, as does one cousin (another has grey) but his eyes are what I would call 'Irish' they are green but if he wears blue they reflect deep blue.

Virtually everyone else has blue eyes.

The one I find fascinating is hair colour. I know it is determined by genetics but when my mum lost hers with chemo it grew back black, then the second time it grew back her original mousy.

We have a few red heads, but they never have red haired children.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 27/09/2019 04:20

I have green eyes. My parents are blue and green. My dh has blue eyes and his parents are brown and blue. His sister is brown eyed. Our three dc are all blue eyed, one of them has eyes that are greener in certain lights. Dh says it's impossible we would have a brown eyed child... But I don't understand why!

OrangeBlindFire · 27/09/2019 04:20

I have blue /grey eyes, dh has brown /green/Hazel I don't know eyes lol
Dd1 has dark brown eyes
Dd2 has blue eyes
Ds1 has dark brown
Ds2 has brown /Hazel

My DM has actual yellow eyes, like a big cat. My DF calls her tiger! I suppose it's a very extreme hazel but I've never seen anyone with this colouring ever, she's very striking.

Sadly my DB and I inherited my dad's green eyes, not quite as exotic.

sweetkitty · 27/09/2019 05:09

I have blue eyes, DH has brown eyes

3DDs have my shade of blue
DS has DHs shade of brown

They all have different hair colours though.

GetRid · 27/09/2019 05:30

I think eye colour is fascinating too. It's the first thing I notice about people.

When I was pregnant I was always intrigued to find out eye colour as my DC have quite an international genetic heritage. They have 3 grandparents with blue or green eyes, and just one with strong brown (mil). I ended up with two brown eyed and one true blue DC.

vampirethriller · 27/09/2019 05:42

My mother has very dark brown eyes and my father has the kind of blue that are almost white.
6 siblings: Green, two light brown, three brownish green
Mine are dark grey
My daughter has black eyes, you can't see the pupil at all

CountFosco · 27/09/2019 06:02

Anyone have rare occurrences ie: two brown eye parents having blue eyes child

This isn't that rare, brown is dominant but if those parents carry the recessive blue genes then they can have blue eyed children. Much rarer is the example above where two blue eyed parents have a brown eyed child but it is still possible because as a PP said there are multiple genes involved in eye colour.

Trouble is that we tend to talk about 'blue', 'green' 'grey' 'hazel' and 'brown' but that hides the variety hidden in each of those colours. I come from the north of Scotland, the majority of people have blue eyes but you see everything from a very light pale blue to blues that are steely, almost grey to my own dark blue eyes. Age makes a difference, MIL is forrin and DH had chocolatey brown eyes when I first met him but he has lost pigment over the years and now has heterochromic green and brown eyes. Conversely, DD2 had grey eyes until she was 2 and then she started getting patches of brown pigment, she has the most unusual and beautiful eyes but describes herself as having 'brown' eyes.

HandsOffMyRights · 27/09/2019 06:21

I have dark brown eyes, husband grey/green.

Non identical boy twins
DS1 dark brown like me
DS2 stunning blue

All bar one grandparent has blue eyes though, so thinking it comes from there.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/09/2019 06:25

A really rate occurrence would be two blue eyed parents having a blue eyed child!

Op. It was strange reading your post as I'm the same as you. I'm blue eyed, oh green eyes, our son is grey eyed but varies a lot depending on the light. In daylight they look green.

I was always told that eyes only got darker on a new born but when he was born they were a nearly black grey. Like graphite and I was really baffled. They lightened over the next year to become very pale.

I'm pregnant with our second so fascinated to see what she has. My whole family is blue eyes but with two variations. A lovely deep stormy blue with a dark line around the iris from my mum, my dad has a very pale blue.

Did you know op, there is a procedure that turns brown eyes blue? Essentially everyone has blue eyes as a default and the colours are made from different amounts of melanin on top. You can't turn blue eyes brown yet though. Obviously the procedure has drawn criticism for some...racist undertones.

xSharonNeedlesx · 27/09/2019 06:29

Dh’s parents both have blue eyes, he has brown. (His Mum was accused of having an affair by other family members!)

My mum has green eyes and my dad blue, me and sister both have blue eyes.

So with dh’s brown eyes and my blue ones we have a dd with blue eyes and a dd with eyes that can’t decide if they are green or brown and that have one of those weird lines of colour in them as well.

HandsOffMyRights · 27/09/2019 06:30

Interesting IamNot as DH's parents are both blue eyed and none of their three DC have blue eyes (all green/grey).

I have very dark brown eyes. My parents claim they were violet as a baby. Now that would be a beautiful eye colour!

Op I saw this year's ago. It's a project of micro photography of the eye. It's strange and beautiful. Reminds me of deep sea creatures!

HalyardHitch · 27/09/2019 06:33

Genetics is fascinating. Both me and dh are dark haired with brown eyes. We have one dark haired child with brown eyes and one blonde child with blue eyes. It seems so bizarre

sunsalutations · 27/09/2019 06:33

I have very dark hair, pale skin and hazel eyes. DH blond and blue eye. Both my kids are blond and blue eyed to my surprise. I always thought dark was the dominant gene
