I know this is a tactless thing to post but what would happen politically if the Queen died tonight?..

She is 93- the possibility’s there...

TheoriginalLEM · 26/09/2019 20:43

I'm not sure I understand the question

LizziesTwin · 26/09/2019 20:43

Harry & Meghan would come back from Botswana, all events involving the Royal Family would be cancelled.

TheresWaldo · 26/09/2019 20:44

Um nothing. They would probably name a national day of mourning.

BertrandRussell · 26/09/2019 21:08

So no constitutional consequences at all? Interesting....

OP posts:
NoHummus · 26/09/2019 21:11

I think Charles, as King, would be to take any necessary political decisions immediately.

NoHummus · 26/09/2019 21:12

be able to

chomalungma · 26/09/2019 21:13

The Queen is dead.
Long live the King.

I bet Charles is a Remainer. No sneaky attempts at proroguation again.

Heatherjayne1972 · 26/09/2019 21:16

Awful as it sounds there’s already a plan for when she dies
Obituaries have been written. The RF always take a black outfit when they go abroad for eg
I expect Charles has certain protocols/ traditions etc that swing into action as soon as it’s made public

It will as always look like a smooth operation

Sarahlou63 · 26/09/2019 21:19

More likely that Philip dies before the Queen. Even so the country will grind to a halt between the announcement and the (huge) state funeral.

Politically? Who knows? If Johnson had any decency he would ask for an extension for the period of mourning but I doubt it.

SalrycLuxx · 26/09/2019 21:20

Charles immediately becomes king. BoJO gets to look statesmanlike as he leads the country in morning and a full on royal funeral occurs. A coronation is planned, which will cheer up the country a bit.

No issues constitutionally as we just need a reigning monarch, and we get one instantly because coronation isn’t how you become king.

Hard Brexit happens. Coronation is used to distract from any issues.

Sarahlou63 · 26/09/2019 21:21

BTW, this is a very interesting article - www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/16/what-happens-when-queen-elizabeth-dies-london-bridge

snowballer · 26/09/2019 21:22

What constitutional consequences were you thinking of?

Cantsleeppast3am · 26/09/2019 21:24

You don't just drop off at 93. The queen looks as fit as a fiddle, she'll be here for a good while yet.

Aposterhasnoname · 26/09/2019 21:25

Charles becomes king the instant the queen dies, there is never no monarch on the throne. He will immediately take over all her duties, including any political formalities.

stucknoue · 26/09/2019 21:26

Actually there's very detailed plans, I'm been to meetings

BertrandRussell · 26/09/2019 21:28

“Awful as it sounds there’s already a plan for when she dies“
Well, yes of course there is. But not sure it was written with rhw current situation in mind!

I wonder things ike this. And no people don't usually just drop off but my grandad had some chest pain which he took painkillers for and went about as normal. They got a bit worse so he drove himself to hospital, probably leaving something defrosting for his tea. He died a few days later of a chest infection.

100PercentThatBitch · 26/09/2019 21:30

What will happen?

Charles instantly assumes all the responsibilities of monarch it's designed that way.

The long organised arrangements for such an eventuality go into gear

Only political consequence would be a period of national mourning and the impact that might have on parliament sittings.

StealthPolarBear · 26/09/2019 21:30

I do get what you mean op. We're at such a crisis that anything else could have huge ramifications. Horrible to say but they wouldn't necessarily be bad.
For the absence of doubt I like the Queen and hope she lives at least as long as her mum.

BeardedMum · 26/09/2019 21:31

A day off work

MmeBufo · 26/09/2019 21:33

Kingship is the only thing to travel faster than light. The very millisecond the queen dies Charles will be king. So, no, no immediate constitutional consequences at all.

But. There seems to be a conserted effort to influence against the monarchy / for an elected he'd of state. I think it'd help that.

Outsomnia · 26/09/2019 21:34

The biggest thing that would happen and the most scary thing is Charles would be King. OMFG. Sorry now, but OP did ask!

Politically I don't think anything would change. Why would it?

But realistically change on the political front is happening before our eyes anyway, and it it is not pleasant to see either. As long as Parliament behaves and does its duty to its constituents, I'm ok with that. Not too hopeful at the minute though! But we shall see.

The monarchy is an anachronism in this day and age, but whatever, it will continue anyway. By tradition I suppose, they serve no other purpose now, as has been seen already.

highinthesky · 26/09/2019 21:35

Boris would deny it happened.

Butterymuffin · 26/09/2019 21:36

It's all Charles's problem then. Which for someone who's waited so long to take it on, would be very 'be careful what you wish for'.

Plus he's a stubborn so and so. Johnson wouldn't want to have to talk him round.

Michaelbaubles · 26/09/2019 21:36

It’s an interesting question because the current convention is for the monarch to be basically a figurehead and that’s the role the queen has mostly taken - however what’s to say a future monarch abided by that convention? If Charles is a remainer he could in theory exercise more power than the Queen has done...not sure of the details but surely possible?
