I know this is a tactless thing to post but what would happen politically if the Queen died tonight?..

She is 93- the possibility’s there...

Lol or trump would intervene and all of a sudden Andrew would become king

ginghambox · 26/09/2019 21:37

Corbyn would be made king, president and prime minister. Is that what you hope will happen?

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 26/09/2019 21:38

I was once told (by someone who was there) that in the scenario planning for Y2K at the BBC, one scenario had “and now the Pope has just died” at some time in the morning of 1st January...

It’s a good point and one I’ve thought about. Any senior royal death would grind the country to a weird sort of halt where it would be felt to be disrespectful to get on with the Brexit business (house of commons bear pit shouting and all). I’m no royalist but I just can’t imagine incisive political journalism being given airtime in such a scenario.

Johnson would attempt to play the statesman and fuck it up spectacularly, but use it an underhand way.

Do you think the Queen looks at him sometimes and goes “can you believe I started with Churchill and now I have... him?!”

StealthPolarBear · 26/09/2019 21:39

And no one would be quite sure why but we'd all cheer

meditrina · 26/09/2019 21:40

The Houses have to sit and swear allegiance to the new monarch

They will not sit on the day of the funeral, which will be a bank holiday.

Other than that, they will decide for themselves what is appropriate. I would suspect that all non urgent business would be suspended during any formal state mourning

StealthPolarBear · 26/09/2019 21:40

ginghambox wow how did you get that from the op? Are you seeing stuff that isn't there maybe

BertrandRussell · 26/09/2019 21:44

“Corbyn would be made king, president and prime minister. Is that what you hope will happen?”
I don’t even want Corbyn to be leader of the Labour Party!

I would put it past Boris to try some underhanded tactic while the rest of the country stopped.

BIWI · 26/09/2019 21:49

But Andrew couldn't become king @StealthPolarBear - William is next in line!

I hope, very fervently, that the younger royals are pro the EU!

StealthPolarBear · 26/09/2019 21:50

I'm sure if trump and put in put their heads together they could make it happen

Outsomnia · 26/09/2019 21:50

Without wishing to sound disrespectful to the monarchy, but what the heck, who cares now.....

I doubt Charles will have the same backing and respect as Her Maj has somehow. She has been a great Monarch in fairness, whether you agree with royalty or not.

Charles might want to watch his back.

FloresTorres · 26/09/2019 21:51

The relatives would turn up to keen and mourn and have a big fall out between themselves as old grudges surface. Also, they would get pissed after finding the drinks cabinet, whilst arguing what songs to play at the funeral. Phil would find jewellery and valuables missing in the morning.
Speaking from experience.

ShippingNews · 26/09/2019 21:51

Prince Charles' political beliefs wouldn't be an issue. As King he'd be simply a figurehead . He certainly wouldn't be meddling in anything political - he has had over 70 years to get used to the idea of his role and I'm sure he'll do it correctly. He'd be well aware that his Kingship might be unpopular with some parts of the population - surely he'd be very careful to do everything just right, and not start rocking the boat as soon as he gets into the role.

MoggyP · 26/09/2019 21:52

"But not sure it was written with rhw current situation in mind!"

No, more Cold War or actual war - look back at previous deaths and their timings, and of course the abdication, and this isn't particularly challenging

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 26/09/2019 21:53

what a shitty thread

Seeingadistance · 26/09/2019 21:54

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I know about all the long-standing plans, but we are in a distinctly unplanned for constitutional situation just now.

NicolaStart · 26/09/2019 21:55

What does anyone expect the monarch to do in a political crisis? The prorogation debacle has demonstrated definitively that the Queen is there to add a ceremonial nod to the actions of the PM and is no more use than a nodding dog.

darkcloudsandrainstorms · 26/09/2019 21:55

Charles is a Labour supporter. Sorted.

littlehappyhippo · 26/09/2019 21:56

@BertrandRussell

Do you know something we don't??? Shock

RoseReally · 26/09/2019 21:58

There is a play called King Charles III (there is a BBC adaptation) about Charles ascending the throne after the queen dies. If you haven't seen it might be of interest, I seem to remember it does involve a constitutional crisis! I think it had mixed reviews but I reallt enjoyed it.

Drabarni · 26/09/2019 22:01

It won't change anything politically, we just won't hear about it on the news as per plan, I suppose.

half the country would sob hysterically about the end of an era, the other half will go to the pub and have a drink or 2 in her memory.

user1493242132 · 26/09/2019 22:05

What a horrible thread! As if the shite happening to the UK isn’t enough.

howyoulikemenow · 26/09/2019 22:05

Imagining the OP standing behind the Queen with a pillow whilst posting...
