A single mum has hit out at a school in Devon for repeatedly giving her daughter detention because the trousers they issued her “didn’t fit her right”.

Lisa Daw said her 16-year-old daughter Beth was told off for wearing the “wrong trousers” when she turned up for the first day of term at Queen Elizabeth School in Crediton.

According to Ms Daw, however, Beth had been wearing the correct type of trousers because teachers had forced her to buy them from the school’s own clothing supplier the year before.

The school reportedly claimed the trousers were “too tight”, and on Tuesday took Beth out of class to march her back to the shop the trousers came from

A shop worker was said to have told the teaching assistant who escorted Beth to the store: “She’s wearing the right ones, it’s just her just her shape,” the Plymouth Herald reported.

Beth was then allowed to return to class but when she arrived back at school a teacher allegedly told her: “They are the right material, but they don’t fit you right.”

Despite meeting with the headteacher, however, Ms Daw was told that Beth would continue to receive detentions until her trousers were changed.

Ms Daw says that because she lives on benefits she has no extra money to pay for the trousers to be replaced.

She also said the incident had made Beth self-conscious about her body.

“She’s being made to feel fat and she’s not,” Ms Daw told i on Wednesday. “In this day and age teenagers are all body conscious.

“My daughter has been saying she’s fat. She’s a size 10/12, so she’s not fat.

“I want my daughter to be proud of her shape, I can’t do anything about her thighs.

Ms Daw has urged the school to change their uniform policy and claimed hundreds of children had fallen foul of the rules since returning from the summer holidays.

“There are lots of parents who have to go and buy mens trousers for their kids because they can’t get them in the size,” she added.

School uniform costs are on the rise and pupils’ parents are forced to turn to second-hand clothes

Ms Daw said she believes the school is now punishing Beth “for her parents’ misfortune” since she can’t afford to replace the trousers.

“I’ve always tried to abide by the uniform policy,” she continued. “It doesn’t matter what hurdles you jump, it just seems there’s always going to be something wrong.”

“She’s not embarrassed about her shape. She’s got wider thighs. She has had a lot of positive feedback from people she doesn’t even know.

“But we haven’t had an apology from school.”

i has contacted Queen Elizabeth School for comment.

Failing to understand how people are condoning it.

A female was removed from her education because of the tightness of her trousers.

And this is where females being treated like sexual objects begins.

When our school changed to an academy, the first day they had about 75% of the pupils removed from lessons for not wearing the correct uniform.

I was later told my trousers "could distract the boys from learning."

What difference do her trousers elasticity make to her education or others?

From the Devon Live public fb page

"My daughter who is 14 and suffers with anxiety had a very similar situation . She has a tiny waist but slightly bigger legs (certainly not fat) so her trousers bought from a schoolwear range were tighter in her legs due to less material to compensate the waist . She was made to feel that there was something wrong with her shape and given way too large boys trousers to wear of which as you can imagine everyone was laughing at her for . She got extremely upset and answered a teacher back so was secluded . All this on the 1st day back to school"

" Beth plays rugby for Crediton and was in Devon under-15s last year: "She's being made to feel fat and she's not. The ones that fit her waist are tight around her thigh - so there's no crease. It's not her fault she's the wrong shape"

Today she was humiliated and embarrassed when a classroom assistant came and took her out of class and marched her down to Town and Country. She had to try on the trousers in front of strangers - and they said 'Yes she's wearing the right ones'. It's just her shape. Now I am waiting for an apology from the school. They should apologise to Beth too for humiliating her in public and they should take all the red cards off her record.

Lisa says her daughter's trousers were bought with a grant from the school and she broke down in tears in the principals office because she is a single mum on the poverty line who cannot afford to buy new uniform. And she feels that the children of poorer families are the ones who are being punished.

"She went to Red Card at break with her food from the canteen because we get free school meals and she was told to put it in bin. She refused to throw it away, so she ate it and was then given another red card for Monday.

"There were 160 red cards on the first day back at school - if you are living on the poverty line your child will keep getting red cards until you can afford to put it right. That's not fair to punish the children.

"I agree there should be a uniform policy - but Beth's trousers are the regulation ones

That is ridiculous WTF happened to school uniform is x colour trousers / skirt - go find a pair the right colour?

I'm totally pro uniform but the idea of forcing parents to use one supplier and one style is taking it too far.

SarahTancredi · 14/09/2019 08:08

why
Good descriptions. Why people always say " just take in the waist" I dont know. Often the proportions of the item.are way out everywhere. That wont solve the crotch hanging down by the knees, the fact you cant bend your knees as its again in the wrong place and the arse half way down to the back if your knees.

If it were that simple we would all just buy a belt and/or a safety pin. We wouldnt try in every pair of jeans in the shop.

And they are also forgetting that this is what happens all the time with these prescribed items ..kids told they arent in the right one . Having to show the labels. Because it looks different. Well of course it does cos kids are all different shapes and sizes.

Blueoasis · 14/09/2019 08:21

Would like to have seen them try to get their trousers to fit me when I was in high school. I developed quickly and was my full height and size by 13. Could they get trousers to fit a girl who was a size 10, has 34 inch legs and massive thighs? From the sounds of it, I doubt it. Morons. Why can't people just buy trousers from other places? They are all black, wtf does it matter how they fit?

SarahTancredi · 14/09/2019 08:30

I'm.the same blue.

I have large hips bum and thighs. A small ish waist. Long body short legs.

All trousers trail.acros the floor. By the time they fit over the hips and the arse they are massive around the waist and they fall down. The crotch is half way down my thighs and rubs. If I size down trousers often dont pull up over ny arse and the crotch digs in. I've had cuts and scrapes from where that happens.

I'm.too tall.for petite rangers but even on skinny Jeans they are all bunched up at the ankle.as they are too long.

As it is I have to have the belts really tight which is uncomfortable. I also have loads of material at the back.of the kneenbut have to pull up the leg sometimes to be able to bend my knees as its not lined up properly.

My pants are often on show too.

Taking in the waist solves very little

Portulaca · 14/09/2019 08:38

Interestingly Susan Calman was making a very similar point on Twitter yesterday about the difficulties of finding yrousers for herself. She's under 5' tall, of otherwise normal proportions, and yet finds it virtually impossible to buy clothes that fit properly.

I'm 5'3 and have enough difficulty getting anything the right length, waist etc and forget dresses that appear to be for the over 6'.

My daughter was so petite when she started Secondary that nothing fitted properly - waist too big but length ok for skirt, or waist fine, length way too short. No school trousers fitted properly at all.

Schools are losing their main focus - it is for education, not body-shaming young girls/teenagers and causing a life-long problem.

If the uniform doesn't fit then the uniform is the problem, not the girl Angry

YeOldeTrout · 14/09/2019 08:44

The girl is one of these rugby players.
Not one of them has a small waist & huge thighs. Their builds look precisely ordinary.

Skirts are allowed at this school (pics on twitter feed).

Part that confuses me is how the staff had anyone spare to escort the girl to the shop. I'm used to school trousers that have adjustable waists & belt loops, anyway.

port

Dds school has an online supplier. Interestingly the trousers start st a 24. That's the smallest size. She was in the 22 skirts with the adjustable waists adjusted. As the skirts went down smaller.

The m&s trousers the school allowed did not fit. The waist was the least of the issues . The proportions were out so Becky you could have made a whole new pair of trousers out of the excess material in the wrong places . Yet despite all this extra material she couldn't even bend her knees and the crotch was digging in.

We didnsourve some trousers from an uniform.shop that I hoped would be ok but they were from the junior section not the senior section. She had age 9-10. Shes outgrown these however the next size up 11-12 is too large so back to square one.

None.of her friends wearntriusers fir thensame reasons. They are all either far to tall and slim for them to fit properly or too short that the right size trails across the floor .

Are all these girls wrong. should we sign them.all up for surgery to make them fit the trousers?

Or could it possibly be that we are missing the.basics here

MitziK · 14/09/2019 09:17

Considering that it's taken me until the age of 46 to find my perfect fitting trousers (M&S, high waist, 7/8 length standard fitting, wide leg, turn ups, belt loops, real pockets heavyweight material - fits a fucking shortarse as full length, 8/8 trousers so well that I've been asked if I had a tailor make them for me), I'm not surprised that a rugby playing teenager has difficulty getting a good fit.

It does sound like it's backfired if the school originally paid for them with a grant, as they've thought 'she needs a new pair' because they don't fit, mum can't afford it, they take her to the shop with the intention of getting her a new pair - and then mum's gone ballistic.

BlackeyedGruesome · 14/09/2019 09:39

DD used to wear a skirt, she grew. We could not get a new skirt to fit, the waist needed to be 24 inches but the length was about 3 inches too short.

She now wears trousers designed for boys from the supermarket.

Still had to spend £400 kitting out one child, ( coats shoes, pe kit books calculators) I have two children in the school they have £800 worth of uniform, kit, bags, coats, shoes between them)

ChicCroissant · 14/09/2019 09:49

I don't have a high opinion of any parent who takes uniform issues to the local newspapers tbh.

Not all clothes fit all people - are trousers compulsory at that school?

Windygate · 14/09/2019 09:51

There are pictures on line of this girl in the school trousers. They are far too small, they are skin tight around her whole leg. The authorised trousers are all slim fit and not fit for purpose for all the girls at the school.

Elodie2019 · 14/09/2019 10:01

So the trousers she is wearing are too small, therefore too tight. They look like jeggings.
If the school receives pupil premium (which looks to be the case) , they should buy her a pair in the correct size and be done with it. Many schools buy the odd bit of uniform for PP students.
I'm guessing the girl actually likes the 'skinny fit' look. Like jeans many girls wear out of school.

SarahTancredi · 14/09/2019 10:11

Again people seem to miss the point around the "correct size"

Any girl with muscular thighs from sports or their general build will often find that the correct size around the waist but too tight else where. By the time you find one "acceptable" in one area they fall down or you cant bend your knees or the crotch hangs too low. Even if you take in the waist that doesnt solve these issues. And even if you hem up the legs that doesnt solve the fact that the knees remain the wrong place.

How are people not getting this.

SarahTancredi · 14/09/2019 10:19

As an example of sizing up issues

I have never ever ever just been able to get the bigger size for the following yr.

My dds wardrobe has several pairs of trousers that would cost more to send back than I paid for then that can testify to this judgement being a mistake. Several pairs of trousers that have never been worn where I've ordered two sizes and decided to keep one for her to grow into that she never does. Or where I figured as the 6-7 are too small the 7-8 will fit. Big mistake.

Every time I find a pair that fits dd2. When I get them again the next size up they dont fit. If I could just roll up the legs I'd do that . But that's not the problem. They just hang all wrong and are not suitable .

And that's if you are lucky enough for the trousers to even exist the following yr. Often they are discontinued or re designed. Even when I order slim fit I will find they fit round the wast nicely but theh are really tight across the crotch so she cant cross her legs..

Elodie2019 · 14/09/2019 10:30

How are people not getting this.

We get it.
The child is most likely PP. the school has money for her to sort it out.
If the parent is not able or willing to, they can buy a bigger size, get it altered and the girl has trousers that fit & comply with school uniform.
The school is obviously not happy with the skin tight jegging look.

mumwon · 14/09/2019 10:52

which is why I find this unisex idea for girls idiotic - newsflash they come in different shapes, sizes & proportions which is why gymslip uniforms were developed/used for schools. skirts cover different shapes OK they are worried about modesty -how about culottes/skorts?

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 14/09/2019 11:09

Anyone who thinks that taking up hems with wondaweb is anything like taking in the waistline on a pair of trousers clearly knows nothing about sewing and dressmaking.

I didn't say it was anything like that. I was merely stating that the DM can get bigger sized trousers and take them in, it's not bloody rocket science.

The DD obviously wants them to look skinny fit and probably why they bought a smaller size in the first place, so the whole thing is a non story. She can even wear a skirt so why all the fuss, papers etc?

HelenaDove · 14/09/2019 15:03

Also from the Devon Live public fb page,

It's the same in our school. 84 girls were put in isolation for the wrong skirt!!!! Wrong material, wrong length and no school logo on it. But the boys don't have to have the school logo on their trousersMy girls were taken out of tutor and put in isolation all day. I've ended up buying them trousers to wear
