Things people used/had that are now considered old fashioned

Saw another poster on a thread talking about landlines! It seems in the past few years that people either don't have one or use them less. I don't have one, I do think they're old fashioned Grin

Anyone have any more to share?

DVDs!

Who'd have thought they'd become obsolete?!

CDs too can't remember the last time I bought one

Getting photos actually printed unless a really special photo.

Mothership4two · 07/09/2019 02:41

Have a landline and still buy cds/dvds - I feel so old

My mobile - no internet access, just a basic phone. Friends laugh at it at parties

My kids cannot believe that I used to write letters when I was younger. They can't seem to grasp the concept!

Mothership4two · 07/09/2019 02:42

Public phone boxes

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/09/2019 02:43

Everyone in my village has a landline because there's no mobile signal

Gingerkittykat · 07/09/2019 03:12

I thought you needed a landline for internet access? Otherwise I don't use mine.

Underskirts.
a separate alarm clock

Internet cafes (never used one but used to see them around).

I print loads of photos!

Gingernaut · 07/09/2019 03:28

Dial up internet
Flip phones
Rotary dial phones - there are videos where tweens and teens are challenged to dial a number on a rotary dial phone and they get it wrong
Walkmans of any description - cassettes, minidiscs or CDs
Headphones that only went in one ear and looked like a deaf aid

Greyhound22 · 07/09/2019 04:25

I have a repetitive dream about a rotary phone 😂 I need to call a number but can't do it. Tis very stressful.

Greyhound22 · 07/09/2019 04:26

Tax discs!

HUZZAH212 · 07/09/2019 04:36

@Gingerkittykat I have house WiFi without a landline. You don't need it installed these days, and you'll be paying an extra bill you don't need to.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 07/09/2019 05:03

Pagers

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 07/09/2019 05:06

I have never have a landline since leaving home in 1999 at 18. I just don't know why you would need one?

In my job I work with a group of local history enthusiasts and coordinate their communications.

They are all old. They send their newsletters by post. RSVPs are through post and landline. They pay for things by cheque. It's like the last twenty years never happened.

JeSuisPrest · 07/09/2019 05:11

Using the yellow pages /telephone directory to find a phone number

Using a paper map/A-Z

Having an address book - I still feel nostalgic for the one my DM had when you pulled the little plastic tab down to the correct letter, pressed a button and it flipped open. 'Twas magic I tell ya!

Soda streams - I know they are still available but the cost of the gas and syrup must far outweigh buying a bottle of fizzy from any shop.

Anticamssars (sp?) on chairs and sofas.

Toilet mats - were they to keep feet warm ot catch drips 🤷‍♀️?

Dollywilde · 07/09/2019 05:14

Actually @jesuisprest soda streams are having a comeback - I know a couple of people who’ve bought one recently, to cut down on plastic (can recycle canisters and drink in a reusable bottle)

DNAwrangler · 07/09/2019 05:34

Nested tables

JeSuisPrest · 07/09/2019 05:42

@Dollywilde Yes that makes sense ♻️. The price of convenience is wastefulness. We're not a big fizzy drinker household, but actually looking at the initial outlay of the machine, cost of gas and syrups it's probably cheaper to get a soda stream than buy in pop, as well as the cutting down of single use plastics - who knew?!

sashh · 07/09/2019 06:12

Tip for soda stream users - double strength squash works as syrup.

I have a filofax that I actually use - is that old fashioned?

Coloured bathroom suites, who else remember the avocado of the late 1970s?

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie

I was listening to the thinking atheist podcast, Seth Andrews was talking about an Amish restaurant. You have to write to book a table and they write back with your booking.

SleepyKat · 07/09/2019 06:21

Diary/work planner. I’m the only person at work who has an A5 printed diary that I write meetings, etc down in. Everyone else just uses the online Outlook calendar and pulls their phone out to check for availability, etc.

fantasmasgoria1 · 07/09/2019 06:50

Someone saying underskirts reminded me of the Christmas when I was 14 and opened a gift from my aunt. I picked it up and I said to mum what on earth is this? It's an underskirt she said. It went in the bin! Also my fiance his mum and myself were talking about a similar subject the other day and teas aids came up. I remember my gran using hers daily. I have never seen one used since!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/09/2019 07:06

I needed to write a letter with a fountain pen this week (for DH... His work still use them for some formal forms of communication and his handwriting is shocking)

Just moved house and yes we needed a landline connected. To use it to make calls will be expensive. (Remember ringing your friends after 6pm only?)

We have a massive DVD collection

Our new house has a serving hatch between kitchen and dining room which we are planning on using

DH has a work diary.

We have paper maps/a-z. They are definitely not obsolete.

Mothership4two · 07/09/2019 07:13

I have just remembered Filofaxes

queenofmycastlex · 07/09/2019 07:13

Floppy discs!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 07/09/2019 07:14

Walkmans
Pagers

Who is your provider?

BT tell me I have to have the landline in order to have BT broadband?

Aridane · 07/09/2019 07:16

Also - with mobile phone early, will it not be expensive for people phoning you from abroad? Please excuse my ignorance. I would like to get rid of my landline but thought it was necessary for the above reasons
