Things people used/had that are now considered old fashioned

Saw another poster on a thread talking about landlines! It seems in the past few years that people either don't have one or use them less. I don't have one, I do think they're old fashioned Grin

Anyone have any more to share?

They pay for things by cheque. It's like the last twenty years never happened.

I had work done a few days ago by someone who asked to be paid by cheque. I searched high up and low down, finally found the chequebook, and the last cheque I wrote was in April 2016 😂

Mamamooligans · 07/09/2019 08:25

Basic phones or dumb phones, I'd actually love to see a comeback, too many people starting into their phones out and about!

ittooshallpass · 07/09/2019 08:29

We still have a rag and bone man. Not horse drawn but he still yells ‘any old iron’ and has a fabulous trumpet he blows to let us know he’s around.

Nancyjuice7 · 07/09/2019 08:30

Women having their hair washed and set at a hair dressers every week. Perms will also die a death in the next 15-20 years

Cornettoninja · 07/09/2019 08:32

Aw this thread has made me nostalgic Grin

I was saying to DP I want to get an A-Z again, I like going to the random points of interest marked in them, the internet just doesn’t turn up a lot of them unless you’re really searching something specific and google maps don’t really cover the really obscure stuff in quite the same way.

I also really mourn the loss of dvd’s, cd’s and to an extent books; my gift giving has suffered a lot over the last decade!

Ginfordinner · 07/09/2019 08:38

I agree Lovestonap. Some people just don't believe that not everywhere has brilliant mobile reception.

The sound quality and voice clarity on our corded landline is so much better than anything else. We obviously use it for internet access as well. We don't have cable or fibre broadband so have to use a BT line.

I still use an atlas, albeit with a satnav as I like to see in detail how a long journey will pan out.

Manontry · 07/09/2019 08:38

Manners.

CherryPavlova · 07/09/2019 08:39

I’m feeling decidedly Neanderthal.

We use DVDs when we go to our boat as no other way to watch television in the evenings. A boxed set of line of duty is a real treat.
We have a landline as we have no mobile reception and use satellite broadband
I use a teapot.
I use a fountain pen
I use underskirts ( I assume that is another name for a petticoat/slip.

MrsSchadenfreude · 07/09/2019 08:39

We still use a teapot and tea cosy!

dinosaurswalloper · 07/09/2019 08:40

DM still has a landline as according to Sky, we can’t use the TV without it shrugs . Also required for community alarm set up as that uses the phone if pressed . Doesn’t work if the power goes though .

TroysMammy · 07/09/2019 08:42

Cassette recorders. Mainly used to record the Top 40 from the radio on a Sunday evening.

Glass cabinets for posh china.

dementedma · 07/09/2019 08:43

I love using a fountain pen. I was gutted when my new work car had no CD player! No microwave here and still use an old fadhioned address book.

missmouse101 · 07/09/2019 08:44

A petticoat is great for stopping your skirt riding up on your tights. I remember carrying a cheque book in my handbag at all times. I used to carry water and a spare fan belt in the car at all times!

CountSnackula · 07/09/2019 08:48

Cloth hankies. My dad uses them and he's 75, and I don't know anyone else who does.

I use a teapot and tea cosy, and wear slips under most skirts!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 07/09/2019 08:49

Men dressed in button down shirts tucked into suit trousers ❤️❤️❤️ The only people I know who do this are my two grandfathers, never seen them in jeans, that feels so wrong! My dad (61) however is a day to day jean wearer and so I think my grandparents’ generation were the last of that smart trend.

I have a Filofax, sodastream, pen pals and I write thank you notes. I think that’s as old fashioned as I get, thinking about it.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 07/09/2019 08:49

Oh and those itchy tartan blankets always kept in the car but never used..... why???

Fifthtimelucky · 07/09/2019 08:53

Cheques? The only ones I write now are to my piano tuner, who is probably about 90.

Calculators? Surely all secondary school children have to have one?

Sunday closing? Most shops in my small town are shut on Sundays.

Mangle? There used to be one at our local (outdoor) swimming pool, but the one I remember best was one my grandparents had in an outhouse. It was massive, with heavy wooden rollers that were about 9" thick.

I don't think anyone has mentioned books yet. I much prefer to read a real book, but rarely buy one these days as we have no room for any more, and lots of those we do have are in boxes in the attic. The kindle is definitely more convenient.

katienana · 07/09/2019 08:55

Aw petticoats. I'm 35 and I always wore one to school, a full one so it was a vest with skirt attached. We also had a horse drawn rag and bone man, probably haven't seen that for about 15 years. These days though there are unmarked white vans driving round all day and they'll take any bit of metal you leave out. I've never had to pay to get white goods removed, sometimes stuff is gone within 5 minutes!

RaininSummer · 07/09/2019 08:55

I still buy cds as I have no desire to pay for a subscription like Spotify. Bought a new address book recently as I don't want to just rely on mobile and net and modern numbers are too hard to memorise. I think anything which is reliant on the Internet should have a back up. For this reason I also have a proper work diary. Don't use land line though its connected I think.

A lot of skills have been lost in our young people through the digital options so I hope they never need to read a map etc.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 07/09/2019 08:57

Standing to change a different channel
Only having three channels
Tape players
Cars with no rear seatbelts
Storage heaters (hated them, never been so cold in my life)

I still have a few petticoats for those awkward skirts that ride up, and we've only just taken the A-Z out of the car. Plus I have a teapot and teacosy in reasonably frequent use.

Ginfordinner · 07/09/2019 08:57

Yes they do fifthtimelucky
DD needed a scientific calculator for her GCSEs and A levels.

PeriComoToes · 07/09/2019 08:57

Women's rights

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 07/09/2019 09:00

Countsnackula I just bought a multipack of cotton hankies for my kids to try and reduce the shredded-tissue-in-trouser-pocket issues and also as part of a zero waste drive we're on..... its funny because the only person I know who uses them is my grandpa. I think a lot of these more old fashioned things will come back.....

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/09/2019 09:00

I think teatowels are on the way out now that so many people have dishwashers (I don't, pah).

Printed photos are having a bit of resurgence as people realise that they never look at the billions of pics they have on their phone and want some favourite photos around them in the house.

I only use my cheque book for the paying in slips at the back (have to pay in cheques to the Post Office as no banks in our town).Suspect these are also on the way out now you can pay cheques in through the app.

Nancyjuice7 · 07/09/2019 09:01

Also cushions on the parcel shelf of cars, I’ve never understood why Hmm
