Things people used/had that are now considered old fashioned

Saw another poster on a thread talking about landlines! It seems in the past few years that people either don't have one or use them less. I don't have one, I do think they're old fashioned Grin

Anyone have any more to share?

My husband often makes younger colleagues laugh by telling them about how, when he was a student, he sported a mullet which he often wore in a pony tail. They don’t believe him when he tells them there is no photographic evidence. As an impoverished student back in the mid-80’s, nobody owned a camera, and even if they did, photos were taken sparingly and usually only on special occasions. Youths today find that a very hard concept to grasp!

The underskirts made me laugh. I have never worn one in my life and I’m 53, but I bought a floaty skirt for summer and you could see my knickers. I haven’t worn it, I need a bloody underskirt don’t i?

weebarra · 07/09/2019 07:26

We've just moved house and were unpacking stuff from storage.
The A-Zs went straight in the bin - we just don't need them now.

DoctorAllcome · 07/09/2019 07:26

Aren’t underskirts called slips?

MaybeitsMaybelline · 07/09/2019 07:27

Unless you have cable or fibre to premises you have to have a landline right now. But these are disappearing on the BT network and will be gone over the next few years as the copper network is replaced by fibre.

You can only be landline free if your house is currently fed entirely fibre (most brand new estates are fed this way now).

All calls will be made by VoIP, so over the internet.

I use WhatsApp audio calls for calling abroad. Completely free from WhatsApp to WhatsApp.

Haven't had a yellow pages for years. Randomly one was delivered to my hose the other day, it was as thin as a magazine. The old fashioned phone book and yellow pages had to have its own cupboard for housing.

Also I really miss the pink water and rinse/spit mini sink at the dentist. Had a filling the other day and it was horrible not being able to use the pink water. After my filling I had a teeth clean with the hygienist and I left with a really gritty pale blue mouth as I couldn't rinse. Germ control apparently.

Fifthtimelucky · 07/09/2019 07:41

Oh dear. I'm feeling very old fashioned. I still use (and buy) CDs and DVDs. I also still watch the occasional video.

I use a Filofax, a fountain pen and a landline for making calls. I'll occasionally use the Satnav if I'm going somewhere remote, especially at night, but in general I much prefer to plan a journey using a paper map.

I also have a mat round the bottom of the loo. I hadn't realised they were no longer common. Much quicker and easier to wash than having to mop the whole floor.

Avocado bathroom suites? Just hideous, as were all coloured bathroom suites. I have removed many hideous ones in my time. The worst was brown.

BroomstickOfLove · 07/09/2019 07:48

I got to rinse and spit at my last dentist's appointment after a scale and polish.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/09/2019 07:51

Typewriters.
Clock radios.

LipSyncForYourLife · 07/09/2019 07:55

Printed newspapers and popping out in the morning to buy one.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 07/09/2019 07:58

I still own underskirts!

topcat2014 · 07/09/2019 08:00

We have a serving hatch. Can't see why you would want to brick it up like neighbours have.

Handy for watching kids through too.

MashedSpud · 07/09/2019 08:03

A mangle. I remember my nana gave hers to my mum and it was such a struggle getting the washing through it. You had to mind your fingers and had to half tip it over to empty it through a little tap.

Lovestonap · 07/09/2019 08:05

Comments like 'I can't imagine why anyone would need a land-line' do illustrate how some people can't conceive a way of life that isn't exactly like their own; which is a bit worrying.

I have a land-line because, living rurally, if I didn't I want be able to take or receive telephone calls. I also need a land-line to receive my Internet through.

From my point of view, things like the Radio Times (once a household staple) are obselete - not only because of TV guides online/on the TV but also because I rarely watch any terrestrial TV live these days. Other people may still find them invaluable. I'd be interested to compare sales figures for Christmas radio times last year to 1990 though :)

BizzzzyBee · 07/09/2019 08:08

If you don’t have dvds how do you watch a film that isn’t on Netflix or Amazon or Sky Cinema etc?

Soola · 07/09/2019 08:08

Pocket calculators.

Skipping ropes. Haven’t seen a child in years with a skipping rope.

Fold up clear/transparent rain hats.

doodlejump1980 · 07/09/2019 08:12

Blockbuster video shops. Going there on the way home from work to get a movie to watch.

user1573624 · 07/09/2019 08:14

I saw an old man using an A to Z at a service station last week and said 'awwww'. Haven't seen one of those since I was a child. Also saw a sign in the doctors waiting room this week sayinf as of next month, the fax machine will be obsolete, please do not send any through. I was gobsmacked they've had one taking up office space until 2019!

@BizzzzyBee I think I've only come across a film once or twice in years and years that wasn't available to buy on Amazon video.

ChickenyChick · 07/09/2019 08:15

I have a landline, as no mobile coverage in our end of the village Sad

I have DVDs and CDs as our wifi is crap, and cannot rely on it for streaming

Am not even in the back of beyond, just an ordinary Hampshire village.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 07/09/2019 08:16

We also called slips 'petticoats' - lovely word!

Telex machines
Printing labels with Dymo tape machines
Bench seats in cars
Adding machine which my father used to do his accounts!
Ice cream in a cardboard packet

bonzo77 · 07/09/2019 08:17

Type writers
Faxes
Separate answer machines
Dial up
Remote controls on a cable
Shoes for small children with buckles not Velcro

Bath houses. Our student slum tenement had no bathroom.
Paraffin heaters, and struggling to drag massive containers of paraffin up three flights of tenement stairs.
Gas powered fridges and washing coppers. The big wooden tongs for lifting the washing out of the boiling water.
Slide rules, logarithm tables and inkwells at school.
Tippex for whiting over typing mistakes in typewritten documents.
The rag and bone man with his horse and cart to recycle unwanted household stuff.
String bags for shopping.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 07/09/2019 08:19

Bonzo77 - I don't have a microwave even now, and I wish they would bring back jeans without lycra - mine keep falling down - they never did!

Witchend · 07/09/2019 08:21

We still have a very large proportion of these. We even chose to leave the serving hatch when we changed the kitchen. So we now even have one between dining room and computer room.
It's very handy for checking the children on the computer.

We have A-Z in the car, and a road map.
We have a landline, DVDs, CDs and even cassettes.
We don't however have a TV.

KatherineJaneway · 07/09/2019 08:22

Teapots and tea cosies.
