Saw another poster on a thread talking about landlines! It seems in the past few years that people either don't have one or use them less. I don't have one, I do think they're old fashioned Grin

Anyone have any more to share?

I don't have any photo albums anymore they are all stored on my phone/fb and any originals are chucked. Also never buy a book, calendar, dvd, diary, rarely send Christmas cards. Haven't wrote a cheque yet this year. Don't keep any plastic wallets with bank statements etc all paperless now. Suits me I hate clutter.

CDs. We saw a good band last weekend, Fling, and DP ordered the CD from their website. It came signed which was sweet - DP sent a pic over WhatsApp. Then I got a followup message... "Do we actually have any CD playing devices?"

We do not.

On getting home I did dig up a USB CD drive and hooked it up to a computer, digitised the album and now we're all happy.

Oh bollocks, I have a tartan blanket in my car. I'm definitely an old gimmer, then... 😭

To add insult to injury:

I always wear a slip under my skirt.
We have a landline (no mobile reception at home)
I make tea in a teapot and use a teacosy, which I made myself.
I always have a pocket handkerchief
I collect teatowels.

I'm only 41!!

SistersOfMerci · 07/09/2019 12:13

Were quite old fashioned according to this thread, I'm happy with that Grin

I do miss the proper electric milk floats where everyone had their milk delivered in the morning. We still have ours delivered in glass bottles but it's not on an electric float.

Second post at lunchtime, if something you were expecting to arrive on the first post didn't turn up, you always knew there's a chance it could arrive at lunchtime.

When i was at school and someones petticoat was hanging below their skirt we used to say 'Charlie's dead'

Greenshield stamps

Swimming hats with flowers on them

Long bolster pillows you used under your top pillows

BarbedBloom · 07/09/2019 12:19

I was going to say books and account statements. Almost all of my accounts and cards etc are paper free now and I got an email the other day saying if anyone wants printed statements they have to pay each month. In work we aren't allowed to print stuff off anymore and if you need something you have to write to an office who do it for you. I think gradually a lot of offices will move to a more paper free environment given what friends and family have said.

Books. I only have one bookcase now for my collection of fairy tales from round the world. I have my kindle for everything else. Everyone has them on the trains now, I haven't seen anyone on the train with a paper book for a while now.

TitchyP · 07/09/2019 12:24

I'm in my 40s and regularly wear petticoats (waist ones) Skirts and dresses, especially jersey ones, hang so much better! And stops pale skirts being see-through in sunny weather.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 07/09/2019 12:29

@CCquavers I remember spin dryers! We still had one when I was small (80’s) at some point my parents must have bought a washing machine with a spin cycle, because I don’t remember it after that..

Ginfordinner · 07/09/2019 12:48

Do you get your internet via mobile data only Brahumbug?
Our signal just isn't strong enough to support iPlayer etc. It has to be via landline.

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/09/2019 12:50

Twin tubs
Black and white TVs
The national anthem at the end of the night, no mid afternoon tv and the test card - girl with a teddy bear
Everything was made to last longer than 5 mins:

  • sturdy wooden pegs
  • thick tins on strepsils
  • Thick plastic
  • St Michael clothes
Toilet seat covers Toilet roll dolls Catalytic converters
KnittingSister · 07/09/2019 13:07

Never mind an underskirt, I bought a pair of cover up beach shorts that I want to wear in summer- not just on the beach- they're so light I need bloomers!

BrendasUmbrella · 07/09/2019 13:12

We have toilet mats. I don't like cold feet!

We don't have tea towels. Things are left to dry on the rack, or kitchen towel for an emergency dry.

notso · 07/09/2019 13:17

Went to Curry's as DS1 had requested a CD player for his birthday. They only had 2.

user1493494961 · 07/09/2019 13:23

When I was young and your petticoat was showing it was 'It's snowing down south'.

Ginfordinner · 07/09/2019 13:23

We used to say "Charlie's dead"

Magpiefeather · 07/09/2019 13:32

Carpet sweeper ! Loved my grandma’s.

Carpet sweeper ! Loved my grandma’s

Yes mine too! Eddie Izzard has a great sketch about them - he calls them hod-d-d-ds 😂

Ronsters · 07/09/2019 13:54

I sometimes wear an underskirt, I've got a couple of summer dresses that are a bit see through without one. I wear a full slip with one.

Record player/"music centre" with radio, cassette player and turntable. Although a few of the younger men at work have music centres to play their "vinyl" on. They are the 70/80s ones though.

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/09/2019 13:54

Sanitary towels the size of a house brick that pinned into your knickers.

LittleAndOften · 07/09/2019 13:57

@BlackeyedGruesome do you remember the ones that came with loops and a special belt?!

I can remember being mortified at ballet class when I had my period - my mum wouldn't buy me tampons, only house bricks which were visible through my leotard Blush

ishouldhavestucktocats · 07/09/2019 14:27

I also remember Tele-bank When you couldn't afford to buy a television this was a way of renting one It had a meter fixed to it and you had to put shillings in to watch the telly...

Pinkarsedfly · 07/09/2019 14:34

I have an underskirt. Good for transparent dresses in summer, and to stop your skirt clinging to your tights in winter.

DH always has a clean hanky. I think it’s sweet.

21 year old DS has started buying DVDs again. He likes to actually physically own the films he buys, he says.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/09/2019 14:38

Ds (5) saw a typewriter in a charity shop window and asked me What it was . When i told him he didn't even believe me!

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/09/2019 14:47

Yeah @LittleAndOften I think the safety pins were because the belt was missing and mum was trying to get me to use up her old ones. I think the belts were because the knickers were not the right close fitting things of today, but big baggy things.

EmpressJewel · 07/09/2019 14:49

Cabinet to display posh glasses or china - MIL has one and it seems really outdated.
