Saw another poster on a thread talking about landlines! It seems in the past few years that people either don't have one or use them less. I don't have one, I do think they're old fashioned Grin

Anyone have any more to share?

Also saw a sign in the doctors waiting room this week sayinf as of next month, the fax machine will be obsolete, please do not send any through. I was gobsmacked they've had one taking up office space until 2019!

Faxes are stillusefullfor things like ECGs. If you have an ECG machine that doesn't store anything and only prints to paper faxing was quicker than using an envelope and a stamp. Even to email it you would need to scan it first.

Didn't you do the white lace handing down lower than your skirt in the 1970s or early 1980s?

I did the petticoat thing. It was early 80’sfor me.

We still have clock radio (no phones in bedrooms), landline phone (useful for ringing misplaced mobile phone! Only family and cold callers use it though). CDs and DVDs. DVDs are mostly kids ones, it’s often cheaper to buy a dvd than buy a download. We stream (rent) films for ourselves. Loads of books (5 bookshelves of varying sizes in the house) - I mostly buy ‘new’ books from charity shops and return when read or pass them on. You can’t pass on an ebook. I’m in my early 40s. DS has to do a project this weekend on retro items and I suggested bum bags, although they appear to be making a comeback, though worn differently

Fifthtimelucky · 07/09/2019 15:40

I did the hanging down petticoat thing too. It had Broderie Anglaise at the bottom. 1978 and 79.

nilcarborundum · 07/09/2019 15:42

Also cushions on the parcel shelf of cars, I’ve never understood why
When I was a kid, our old car had bench seats. There was enough room for my brother and I to stretch out and sleep on the way home from a long journey. We had two cushions and a blanket. I can still remember my father carrying me in from the car 😊

Xmasbaby11 · 07/09/2019 15:45

Some of these things are still normal to me!

I buy Cds and DVDs. I write letters. I have a filofax.

I'm 43.

Have a landline has the mobile signal in the house isn’t the best
Have plenty of DVDs
I have a diary book
Have lots of maps and every car has an a-z
Didn’t realise the towels were old fashioned. Have loads. What do people use instead?
Use an alarm clock and have actual radios
Have a couple of copper bed pans which I’m sure Which needed could be used as intended when made and not just decoration

fedup21 · 07/09/2019 15:55

Everyone I know has a landline! How do you get Broadband without one?

Brahumbug · 07/09/2019 15:59

Do you get your internet via mobile data only Brahumbug?
Our signal just isn't strong enough to support iPlayer etc. It has to be via landline.
Yes, we are lucky in that we have a strong 4G signal. The great thing about the router is that you can move it to wherever you want, even take it away with you, ad long as there is a signal of course!

Ginfordinner · 07/09/2019 18:09

I thought you only had a router to connect to a landline. Surely you don't need a router if your phone is a mobile hotspot?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 07/09/2019 18:31

I think people mean landline phone sets are old fashioned?? E.g. we have a landline but never connected it to a phone so couldn’t tell you our number. You can connect a computer etc. to the internet via your phone (on an iPhone it’s ‘My Personal Hotspot’) but I don’t think it’s as economical and it won’t work if your phone can’t find any internet.

ranibowsprimkle · 07/09/2019 18:43

I still have a pager for work. They've mostly fazed them out for a mobile app but the mobile signal is so unreliable where I am that we still have our pagers.

You never hear of anybody wearing their Sunday best anymore. I used to love getting dressed up for church when I was little

LlamaofDrama · 07/09/2019 21:51

We have lots of these! DH currently reading a paper newspaper. We have an alarm clock because phones are switched off at night (I was bemused the other day by someone who had to switch her phone off and didn't know how). Although tbf I can't work the alarm clock so I use my phone when DH is away. No mobile signal at home so we use a landline phone in preference to mobile. Not only do we have cds and DVDs but we also have and watch videos...

But I had to remind dd this evening how to find live tv as we only normally watch catch up. Live is for DH's sport.

AMAM8916 · 07/09/2019 22:02

I have a diary for writing appointments in and working in accounts, I still write out all the remittance on a notepad first then enter it rather than flicking back and fourth.

I still have baths sometimes!

I don't have an electric whisk, I whisk by hand!

I buy fresh flowers rather than buying plug in air fresheners.

I barely use my tumble dryer and prefer to hang my washing up/out.

I don't really use my microwave. I prefer to heat up beans and soup etc on the hob.

I'm 30 by the way. I sometimes miss the life where phones and technology weren't the be all and end all. I quite liked getting things in the post and tasks taking a bit longer and keeping me amused and distracted longer. I never had Facebook until I was 20 and I never had a laptop/PC until I was 20 either. I used to walk a lot more and read too. I need to get back into those things!

Brownie pockets. You couldn't pass inspection unless you had the right things in there. 10p for a phone call, a piece of string, a hankie, and I can't remember what else.

SarahAndQuack · 07/09/2019 22:58

YY, old fashioned here.

Never owned a microwave or tumble drier; I own a mixer thing but usually make cakes with a wooden spoon/whisk as it's nicer with a small child who is frightened of the mixer noise. We weigh in ounces on a balance scale as the numbers are easier for me to hold in my head (I'm too dyslexic to keep big numbers in mind). For the same reason I don't use my phone for much except phoning people, though I do use the camera function.

Never heard of tea towels going out. Confused.

The things I miss are now seen as old fashioned:

  • cutting recipes out of the paper to keep. Now I always think I'll remember to google for it, but of course I don't.
  • those wire chickens you put eggs in. I coveted the one my best friend's mum had, and was really sad to realise they're now considered naffly 90s. I quite fancy one and it's too early to find them in retro shops.
  • as @AMAM8916 says, air fresheners! I doubt I would like the idea of them now, but I remember when they were all the range and I thought they were so sophisticated. When did they make the transition from chic to taxi driver vomit-concealment?!
  • boil-washes. We all seem to wash at 30 and 40 degrees, and obviously it's good for the environment, and fine just to do the odd really hot wash for things like bedding/towels. But I do miss the lovely smell of a really hot wash, especially on a cold autumn morning when you'd get the clothes out and crunch through the frost to put them on the line, steaming away like mad.
