Do you arrive 5 minutes before you start or more like 15 mins ?

I get in an hour early but it's my own business and a work a long hard day so I like to have a coffee and center myself a bit before I start.

hiddenmnetter · 05/09/2019 07:46

I turn up generally around an hour early- I avoid all traffic this way, and we operate a first in first out basis, so I generally get to leave an hour early if I’m in an hour early- it isn’t guaranteed (although happens most shifts) but if I get to work on time, then I spend more time commuting and go home later..

HollysTeflonSeptum · 05/09/2019 07:48

I'm glad I found this thread, it's given me a kick up the arse.

I've recently returned to work after being a SAHM for years and thought I was doing well getting there 5 mins before. But it's true about checking emails, getting a drink etc eating into the time.

Think I'll aim for at least 20mins before now.

BlackNoir · 05/09/2019 07:50

About 45 minutes. Means I miss the rush hour traffic and I am guaranteed a parking space. Nice cup of coffee and a bowl of porridge, get changed and I'm good to go.

HollysTeflonSeptum · 05/09/2019 07:55

Also OP, the title made perfect sense to me as I briefly read it as 'before you start-start' I.e post tea and brekkie time.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 05/09/2019 07:58

I don’t have a fixed start time unless I am running a training seminar, and even then I like to be there 30-45 minutes early. Back in the old days when I was in a job I hated, I used to cut it pretty fine but I’m rather more motivated now, plus I hate having to rush.

soulrunner · 05/09/2019 08:12

Don’t have set hours but tend to get in at least 15 mins before first call/meeting etc to switch on/get relevant files open etc.

milliefiori · 05/09/2019 08:14

Half an hour. I like to set up in peace, go to the loo and make a coffee before I have to get stuck in.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 05/09/2019 08:15

I don't have a start time, I just arrive when I arrive and start then. Ditto when I go home. Although I have a standard alarm clock time/routine on office days so its usually the same time anyway.

Today I was about 10mins later than usual as I stopped to get bread and milk at the BP.

PerkyPomPoms · 05/09/2019 08:16

School starts at 8:55 and I am at work for 8.

crosser62 · 05/09/2019 08:19

I’m a nurse, I arrive about 20 minutes before my shift to have a coffee and a wee because it may be the only one of each I get for the next 12 hours.

coffeeforone · 05/09/2019 08:24

1 hour early if DH is doing nursery drop off. 15-30 mins late if I'm doing drop off, longer if the trains are delayed.

Flexibility needs to work both ways. My employer doesn't mind if I'm late, but would expect me to work whatever hours are needed to fulfill my responsibilities.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 05/09/2019 08:26

At most 5 mins, usually on time.

EBearhug · 05/09/2019 08:40

Don't have set hours, so I arrive when I arrive. I am usually one of the later ones, as I miss the traffic that way - it takes 25 minutes if I aim to arrive by 10, but about an hour if I need to be in for a 9am meeting and I resent spending extra time in traffic unnecessarily. It means I am usually one of the last to leave, but I can get a lot of work done at the end of the day when I have fewer interruptions - and some days, I have calls with the US which may be later anyway.

I know I need at least 10 minutes to boot my laptop and get settled, so I aim to be in at least 15 minutes before any call or meeting.

It's varied in other jobs - I have had customer-facing jobs with fixed shifts, I have had jobs where I wear uniform, I have had jobs I walked to, cycled to and been dependent on public transport for. All those different things can mean you need more time on arrival to get ready to actually start work, and longer commutes where public transport is involved, you need to leave more time for travel delays, which could mean you end up arriving earlier than you need to when it all goes to plan.

cocomelon23 · 05/09/2019 08:46

I'm usually in half an hour before my start time.

IamHyouweegobshite · 05/09/2019 08:48

I'm a Ta, I get paid ftom 8.45, I'm generally in just after 8. Easier with traffic and getting a parking space, drop my kids off, get a tea and have a quick chat about the day ahead before the children come in.

museumum · 05/09/2019 08:49

Those who check their emails before their start time? Are you not paid to do emails!?!
I’m self employed but when employed was always on flexi which was counted from computer log in time.
Employers are taking the piss if emails are not counted as work.

toria658 · 05/09/2019 08:53

7-7:30, school officially starts at 8:50am.

Fantababy · 05/09/2019 08:55

mumseumum I'm a teacher so don't have time to check my emails during the school day so there's an expectation you'll do it before. It's not right though - you should not be expected to do anything work related in your own time. There are people who physically can't get in till just before 8.45 so I don't know what they do.

WalesStar · 05/09/2019 08:57

9am- that’s when they start paying me.

OneThreadOnly0101 · 05/09/2019 08:58

Today I think I was 3 minutes late...

Holly what do you mean, checking emails before starting work? Isn't that work?

HollysTeflonSeptum · 05/09/2019 09:11

I think I mean checking what the day has in store for me before I act on it probably while slurping tea and eating sth.

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 05/09/2019 09:15

10 mins to boot up laptop, scatter my breakfast all over my keyboard and catch up with other earlybird starters still doing summer hours Grin

Leapyearlover · 05/09/2019 09:21

I'm a teacher. 5 minutes.
