If a snap election is called, who will you vote for?

NewNameJust4Today · 03/09/2019 06:11

This will be such a difficult election, as I reckon almost everyone will vote tactically.

I am a remainer, and was a traditional Labour voter, though that doesn’t feel like home any more.

I also voted no, but now find myself thinking independence might not be the worst option any more.

I will not vote for Johnston.
I like Jo Swinson, but her party will never be big enough to make a big difference.
Corbyn seems a principled man, but he is too far left for me and he’s not a leader - he is a divisive character.
Farage represents all I hate in politics.

I will be voting SNP,, for the first time in my life.

Tory govt demonstrated anti Semitism just this week, let alone their islamophobia. My husband is Jewish and we would both struggle to vote labour based on their handling of the anti semitism within the party. But it’s clear that there are problems in most parties that none are dealing with well

Skyejuly · 05/09/2019 08:28

Green

PigeonofDoom · 05/09/2019 08:28

Anti-semitism does bother me but then so does islamophobia and anti-immigrant rhetoric. It’s a shit choice either way.

I accept that Labour is dealing with anti-semitism; the Conservatives, however, aren't, nor are they dealing with their rampant Islamophobia as demonstrated by their action in electing a bigot as leader.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 05/09/2019 08:32

The bigotry within the parties is a reflection of the bigotry that still persists within society

darkcloudsandsunnyskies · 05/09/2019 08:32

Parliament does not want us to leave the EU nor do they want to risk another election.

Democracy is suspended or abolished so the question of who you should vote for is now redundant.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 05/09/2019 08:37

Leave voters seem to support the suspension of democracy now despite going on about the idea of a second referendum being “undemocratic”. On the today programme this morning a leave voter said he wouldn’t vote in a GE because It meant his vote in the referendum was being ignored Confused - as though we should now live in a dictatorship and never vote again

Incandescentwithage · 05/09/2019 08:40

Democracy is for those who represent to represent. Not follow personal agendas. Labour are doing very little to to sort out antisemitism but you will make it fit your ideals.

Chocolatedaim · 05/09/2019 08:40

Anti-semitism does bother me but then so does islamophobia and anti-immigrant rhetoric. It’s a shit choice either way.

I agree with this completely. Stuck between a rock and a hard place. Corbyn is weak and failing to tackle anti-semitism but I’m a life long labour supporter and can’t face voting Tory, who are also full of racist bigots...

Kazzyhoward · 05/09/2019 08:40

Leave voters seem to support the suspension of democracy

It's Remainers in Parliament who have consistently voted against any kind of deal or no deal just to stop the referendum result being enacted. It's Remainers who are against democracy.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 05/09/2019 08:43

No - if the ERG and DUP had voted for the WA we would have left by now. It is leavers being unable to agree how to leave that have stopped us leaving. Stop trying to make out leavers are the plucky underdogs - leave won, why haven’t they sorted it out yet instead of infighting?

HerSymphonyAndSong · 05/09/2019 08:43

“Labour are doing very little to to sort out antisemitism”

I said exactly that upthread Confused. I’m not actually a labour voter. What’s your point?

SeaWitchly · 05/09/2019 08:45

Tory. No other party has a hint of a plan

Oh the irony 😁😁😁😁

HerSymphonyAndSong · 05/09/2019 08:46

The leave camp have consistently failed to take responsibility for enacting the result of the referendum. They all chickened out of leadership after Cameron resigned because they knew they couldn’t do it - they preferred to snipe from the sidelines and refused to vote in Parliament for options that would have meant we would have left by now. Leave voters need to understand that the leaders of their movement have failed them, not lay the blame with remainers and the EU. Take responsibility.

Bunnyfuller · 05/09/2019 08:50

Can someone please explain the specific anti-Semitic incidents that have taken place within Labour. Criticism of military action is NOT ant-Semitic, it is no more anti-Semitic that our condemnation of Sadam Hussain’s action, or events in FRY, or ISIS.

What actually happened?

bellinisurge · 05/09/2019 08:50

"It's Remainers in Parliament who have consistently voted against any kind of deal or no deal just to stop the referendum result being enacted. It's Remainers who are against democracy."
More silly nonsense.
If the ERG/DUP sect had supported WA we would be out by now. If they had, enough Labour Leave MPs would have got on board.
Even Johnson voted for it.

Cwenthryth · 05/09/2019 08:51

I don’t think either leavers or remainers are the Borg and people voted the way they did for myriad reasons, so therefore it is fairly stupid to construct any argument that leave voters think X or remain voters think Y.

I think few of us will have any option in the next election to vote for a candidate or party that we 100% support - I think most of us will be choosing the least worst option based on how we weigh all the different issues each presents.

BunchMunch · 05/09/2019 08:55

Conservative, although Labour won the seat in 2017.
I would vote tactically so either Cons or BXP.
I think there may be a lot of surprises in this GE.

Kazzyhoward · 05/09/2019 08:56

if the ERG and DUP had voted for the WA we would have left by now.

It wasn't just the ERG & DUP who voted against the WA!!

thecatneuterer · 05/09/2019 09:03

@Bunnyfuller I also need an idiot's guide to this. I normally follow politics pretty well and generally understand the issues, yet I've somehow completely failed to grasp the anti-semitism issue. I'm strongly opposed to Corbyn for other issues, but even I have to admit he seems to be principled (even though they are mainly principles I disagree with) and have a hard time believing he would be in any way racist or anti semitic.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 05/09/2019 09:06

“It wasn't just the ERG & DUP who voted against the WA!!”

The tiny margin by which it was voted down would have easily gone the other way

HerSymphonyAndSong · 05/09/2019 09:07

You need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and blaming remainers and start getting angry with the leave leaders - they have failed you by not coming together and agreeing on how we should leave. Remainers are NOT to blame for this.

sweetheartyparty · 05/09/2019 09:09

I'd vote for my labour MP. He's consistently voted to avoid a no deal Brexit and he represents a large leave constituency. I think its takes some bravery to that because he must be getting lot of flack from it

Cwenthryth · 05/09/2019 09:10

I think there may be a lot of surprises in this GE.

I think everyone can agree on this!

Any GE before Brexit happens will very likely see BXP MPs. What would they then do after Brexit? Hang about for 5 years? Or step down to trigger by-elections?

Lib Dems will surge in the future no matter what happens - post Brexit they’ll be a solid rejoin EU party forever. Which will mean they’ll be off-limits to many voters, but will have a consistent significant minority for a long while I think.

What do people think of all the various Independent and Change MPs? Will they keep their seats or get booted?

HerSymphonyAndSong · 05/09/2019 09:10

I’m not going to let leavers get away with saying “remainers are thwarting brexit” any more. Remainers have just been voicing opinions, that is all, which is their democratic right. The power is in the hands of the leave camp and they have consistently failed to agree on what they want, and that is why we have not left yet. When everyone says “the will of the people” they mean leave voters, not remainers! Remainers voices do not count at all here. Leave won, but they have not got on with it, they have persisted with infighting and blaming everyone but themselves for the fact that we have not left yet
