What do you have with an omelette?

I work in a mental health hospital and we're trying to come up with a healthy eating plan. We've put omelette on there, but disagree about whether there needs to be carbs on the side of the dish. I say no. I've never had an omelette with chips or mash or potatoes! Just a crisp salad.
What do you think?

I would normally have toast as for us it’s a quick easy supper. If you don’t have carbs on the use then where are they in the meal? I guess you could have a Spanish omelette (then I wouldn’t have toast).

I've definitely heard of omelette and chips so it is a viable option.
I suppose a lot of it depends on how big or packed an omelette it is i.e. if you've put ham, cheese & tomatoes through it, then just a side salad would be sufficient. But if it is just a 2 egg standard omelette, I think you will need to bulk it out with the likes of chips, or beans. Perhaps a couple of sausages rather than the carbs on the side?

RibenaMonsoon · 27/08/2019 14:05

Sometimes potato wedges, sometimes a salad. Depends on how hungry everyone is.

Most of the time it's a salad, but I usually add a tin of butter or cannilini beans to bulk the salad out a bit.

Danni91 · 27/08/2019 14:06

Depends on the filling
I like omelette hash brown & beans
Tomato omelette & chips
Mushroom omelette with toast

Depends on my filling and my mood

Must say I've never had omlette and salad though but have seen it.

If it’s breakfast you don’t need to bulk it up with carbs, but if it’s lunch add chips/beans/toast

AdaColeman · 27/08/2019 14:11

If it were frittata which includes sliced potatoes and cheese as well as other vegetables, then I think it would be fine to serve it as a single item.

If it's a simple filled omelette (eg mushroom) I think it needs something else with it, garlic bread or potato wedges perhaps.

I don't have omelette with anything Confused Is that why omelette never fills me up??

expatinspain · 27/08/2019 14:13

An omelette and salad is all you need. Chips with it is just making it unhealthy and too carby. If you want something more filling how about tortilla (Spanish omelette), which has potato (onion too if you like)? This is just as nice cold, so can be precooked too.

vampirethriller · 27/08/2019 14:15

Beans usually.

Speakercube · 27/08/2019 14:15

This won't help! - I have a few chips and salad with omelette. My friend only has salad maybe that's why she's slimmer than me then.... When eating out depending where you go it's either option and if it's salad only then I order a side of chips! Maybe a compromise of just a small amount of chips plus loads of salad?

ChristineBaskets · 27/08/2019 14:18

Cheese and mushroom omelette has to be accompanied by baked beans and sliced tomatoes in my house. Sometimes a slice of bread and butter too.

expatinspain · 27/08/2019 14:18

Another option is a side salad and some vegetable crisps like parsnip or beetroot or something like that. They're easy to make and healthy.

DarlingNikita · 27/08/2019 14:21

Chips if I'm eating out, salad or cooked greens at home.

HaileySherman · 27/08/2019 14:33

My immediate that was a nice green salad. However to appeal to a wider group maybe carbs should be offered. Toast or roasted potatoes would be appropriate. Myself, carbs just bulk me up, cause weight gain. I know plenty of people who need carbs to feel good. Everyone's body metabolizes differently, so I think carbs should be included.

DustyMaiden · 27/08/2019 14:36

Truth be told, I’ll not lie to you, I likes a fucking salad with my omelette.

Beautiful3 · 27/08/2019 14:37

Salad and tomatoes.

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/08/2019 14:37

Chips and salad.

TheMessyCleaner · 27/08/2019 14:38

We're working towards weight loss so maybe not roast potatoes or hash browns

BarbedBloom · 27/08/2019 14:38

If I have a three egg omelette with cheese I just have a salad, but otherwise I would have toast or something. If it is a frittata I just have that

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/08/2019 14:39

Never beans as beans must not touch egg.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/08/2019 14:40

I've never had an omelette with chips but I have seen it on menus.

My preferred option is to make the omelette the meal. So, I gently fry cooked new potatoes, onion, mushroom, ham, peppers, herbs etc. Potato, spring onion and ham is my favourite. When it's hot all the way through I add one beaten egg and finish cooking. Nice with bread or salad. I only have bread if there wasn't much potato. Occasionally I grate a small amount of strong cheese on top. Can easily be healthy and filling and much nicer than chips.

happycamper11 · 27/08/2019 14:41

I'd do new potatoes or chips etc with an omelette as a main meal, I'd be starving with no carbs

BeanBag7 · 27/08/2019 14:43

For lunch, salad.

I wouldn't have a standard omelette for dinner but I could have a Spanish omelette/ tortilla/ frittata with sliced cooked new potatoes, tomatoes, peas etc to make it more filling

Diagonalli · 27/08/2019 14:45

butternut chips & veg for me

proseccoaficionado · 27/08/2019 14:45

What about a filling omelette? Bacon, ham, cheese, potato (spanish)? And there's no need for extras then
