I have noticed that there are not many butterflies about at the moment. The only ones I have seen are the cabbage white.

I've seen absolutely tons, but I live fairly rurally in a good area for butterflies.

Loads in my garden but I have quite a lot of butterfly friendly plants (mostly accidental). My cat isn’t particularly butterfly friendly though 🤦🏼‍♀️. I’ve noticed mostly whites too but that could just be because they are very abundant and easy to spot from a distance when they are fluttering. The more camouflaged ones are harder to see, ime.

Millions of them all over the buddleias.

Peacocks, Red Admirals, Commas, Painted ladies

PhyllisVance · 21/08/2019 14:58

Tonnes this year compared to hardly any last year. Lots of varieties too.

EntirelyAnonymised · 21/08/2019 14:58

I live in a city with a good sized mature ‘plants’ garden (not a plastic lawn and gravel job).

bellinisurge · 21/08/2019 14:59

Flipping loads when I was on holiday last week in South Wales. I went to loads of butterfly friendly areas - gardens, castles etc. And they were pleasingly everywhere.

I like this one

We've had lots of cabbage whites and painted ladies, and even a couple of peacock butterflies which I've never seen in the wild before :)

TimeIhadaNameChange · 21/08/2019 15:00

I've seen more this year than I have in a long time.

BlueBilledBeatboxingBird · 21/08/2019 15:02

Lots, including quite a few painted ladies.

Mileysmiley · 21/08/2019 15:02

Well I live in the countryside and there are not many about ... last year there were 100s, so I don't know where they have gone.

We’ve had loads just in the front garden, mostly white and admirals. Can’t remember there being this many last year, but maybe the hedge is more flowery

Mileysmiley · 21/08/2019 15:05

A nice butterfly song

Huge amounts, especially at PILs in the Highlands.

Loads in my grandparents garden at the moment! More than I've ever seen in one place before. They have lots of insect friendly plants and flowers to attract them.

PickAChew · 21/08/2019 15:08

They're all in our garden. Surprisingly few cabbage whites.

RedForShort · 21/08/2019 15:10

A lot more than previous years, but certainly not loads as there were in my childhood.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2019 15:11

I don't know where they have gone.

Everywhere except your garden, apparently... maybe the weather is suiting them better in some areas rather than yours? (I'm in the northwest). Or have you changed your planting at all?

I've had loads, especially on the buddleia - peacocks, commas, tortoiseshells, small and large whites, and lots of painted ladies this year.

And an elephant hawk moth caterpillar.

Mileysmiley · 21/08/2019 15:50

I have just seen one like this

Lots. The buggers have chomped all my nasturtiums. But at least I get to see them flying around.

chaplin1409 · 21/08/2019 16:04

We had a conversation about butterflies the other day and that we had seen loads this year. Maybe so areas are experiencing a dip in numbers and other areas an increase

PasDeGeeGees · 21/08/2019 16:09

Plenty of red admirals, there are three on my buddleia right now. Seen some painted ladies, small tortoiseshells, cabbage whites, other small white ones and flittery brown jobs, and earlier in the year we had brimstones and commas.

Not seen any peacocks at all though.

pottedshrimps · 21/08/2019 16:24

We've had lots, but we have a massive buddlea and other insect friendly plants.

mejon · 21/08/2019 16:32

I'm very rural and I've hardly seen any this year. I used to have a lovely big aster in the garden that used to be covered but it's somehow conked out and I'm quite low on other flowering plants. I did see a fox in the garden last night though - eating the leftover tomato pasta I'd thrown out for the birds. First sighting in the 10 years we've lived here!

RainOrSun · 21/08/2019 16:47

Hundreds and hundreds when went to the seaside a couple of weeks ago.
And some beautiful blue things last week.
