I have noticed that there are not many butterflies about at the moment. The only ones I have seen are the cabbage white.

Loads. But I have two buddlieas in the garden.

NanTheWiser · 21/08/2019 17:01

That's a Monarch butterfly, Miley, native to North America, so rather unlikely to see it in that UK. Maybe you saw a Painted Lady, a migrant from North Africa, as this year there have been thousands spotted over here ( I saw one today) and are of similar colouring.

SilverySurfer · 21/08/2019 17:04

I've seen lots on my buddleia tree this year.

EmmiJay · 21/08/2019 17:05

I have😭 massively huge ones. I'm terrified of them and keep getting these 2"er sized ones in my bedroon when I open the terrace door. They bang against the window and no word of a lie they sound like little birds when they fly😭🤮

anonnn · 21/08/2019 17:05

Last week - not a clue what sort of butterfly but had six or seven of them on the budliea .

Loads on the West Coast of Scotland, rurally and in towns, some “new” ones that people were stopping in the street to look at.

Bubblysqueak · 21/08/2019 17:09

So many more than last year.

Mileysmiley · 21/08/2019 17:11

@NanTheWiser

Perhaps it has come over from US for a holiday ....

Loads this year, lots of small white ones (not cabbage whites) but a good variety too. It's been a great year where I live, far better than last year.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2019 17:21

That's a small tortoiseshell, anonn

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 21/08/2019 17:23

I see lots. I have echinaceas and a buddleia, so they attract them

Weaverspin · 21/08/2019 17:25

So few around here (Gloucestershire). Nothing on the Buddleias, none in the garden (though we have plenty of bees and other insects). I was commenting to a friend the other day how weird it is to have buddleias with no butterflies...

Oliversmumsarmy · 21/08/2019 17:27

Loads of Red admirals then today saw a few cabbage whites flying around dome buddlea

IgnoranceIsStrength · 21/08/2019 17:29

Midlands here and semi rural, massive decline for us. Last year they were everywhere and we could barely keep up when counting for the big butterfly count. This year hardly any.

Heratnumber7 · 21/08/2019 17:33

Loads on our budleia - more than last year I think. But we are rural-ish.

smoooth · 21/08/2019 17:36

I've had a lot of meadow browns and cabbage whites on my back lawn this year. Although my lawn does get very meadow-y due to infrequent mowing! When I was a kid (40 years ago) I never saw meadow browns, we had small tortoiseshells & peacocks instead. I don't see so many of those now.

fergusthefrog · 21/08/2019 17:38

I've seen hundreds of painted ladies this year in our garden, so many more than we've ever seen before

madcatladyforever · 21/08/2019 17:39

Almost none and hardly any bees despite only planting insect friendsly plants and flowers and never using weed killer.
Not much good though when neighbours each side use weedkiller like napalm all year round.
So selfish when they could just pull up the weeds by hand instead of sitting in front of the tv 24/7.

Chloesmumtoo · 21/08/2019 17:40

We've planted a range of plants in our border to suit butterflies and bees but not had many butterflies this year to be honest. I did photograph this painted lady last week though. South West area.

BogglesGoggles · 21/08/2019 17:42

I’ve seen more than in past years. But still not loads (I grew up in Australia so am accustomed to an abundance so maybe I just haven’t figured out what is a normal amount here yet).

PartridgeJoan · 21/08/2019 17:48

I've seen lots of white ones

katseyes7 · 21/08/2019 17:50

We've had loads this year. And l live not far from a city. They love my buddleias!

Likethebattle · 21/08/2019 18:32

Seen loads in West Scotland this year, this one was about a month ago.
