I have noticed that there are not many butterflies about at the moment. The only ones I have seen are the cabbage white.

Are you in the UK? Because like nanthewiser I’m not sure that two of your species are indigenous.
Lots of butterflies here in Sussex.

Crinkle77 · 21/08/2019 19:07

I've seen loads too and moths.

SpeedyShutter · 21/08/2019 19:25

Yes. I'm in Yorkshire and I've seen lots - big white ones, small white ones, light orange ones, dark orange ones and some that I think are moths with red and black wings. I've also seen quite a few dragonflies and damselflies in the last couple of weeks.

xsquared · 21/08/2019 19:46

Plenty of red admirals, painted ladies, peacocks, small tortoises, cabbage whites and orange tips. Saw a few blues as well but not many.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2019 19:55

some that I think are moths with red and black wings.

Cinnabar and burnet moths are black and red, different markings.

I’m amazed at other peoples’ abundant butterflies. My organic country garden is full of flowers but I’v only seen a very few Cabbage Whites, a couple of Red Admirals and a couple of Tortoiseshells. There were a few Brimstones earlier. Nearby buddleia has no butterflies at all.
We feel we’re witnessing the extinction of most native butterflies, birds and small mammals.

Ronsters · 21/08/2019 20:15

I've had a few, not many. I live semi rural, have a lot of plants that attract butterflies and don't use insect sprays. I had more last year.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2019 20:16

There was a 'big butterfly count' earlier this month, maybe you could see from that if there's regional variation?

Seen absolutely loads, especially in comparison to the last few years.

But, the cat keeps killing them and bringing them inside. We're averaging about two dead butterflies a day at the moment. Confused

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 21/08/2019 21:35

Loads on the buddlea and other bushes. Peacocks, painted ladies and tortoiseshell ones and of course cabbage whites.

Also had my first ever hummingbird hawk moth. Never even seen one before.

There are about ten thousand (read: two) living in my house at the moment...they fly in and then refuse to leave 🤔

I’m really surprised you haven’t seen many - it’s been a special, once-in-a-decade boom year this year. I counted at least 30 in one corner of my garden a couple of weeks ago.

LifeOfBox · 21/08/2019 21:55

Tons here in my garden (N Yorkshire), varieties I haven’t seen for a year or two including the common blue which is a favourite of mine.

LavenderAndBeeswax · 21/08/2019 21:58

Yes I haven't seen as many. I had a purple and a white buddleia. I cut down the purple one and I've hardly seen any on the white one, which makes me think they prefer purple buddiea as there were lots in my garden last year.

OpenYourEyes · 21/08/2019 22:03

Hundreds! We have a massive bush/tree in the garden and they swarm all over it.

The Midlands were where all the failed cauliflowers came from weren’t they? Maybe the wet affected the butterflies there too.

I’ve seen a fair number in the SW, again painted ladies & red admirals and lots of blues at the coast. Only one tortoiseshell though, and no peacocks.

LavenderAndBeeswax · 21/08/2019 22:24

OpenYourEyes is that a white buddleia? I wonder why they aren't going for mine this year. It's in full bloom

ohmydaysagain · 22/08/2019 07:23

I've barely seen any this year

bruffin · 22/08/2019 07:29

Loads in my garden. Il
I was at the Regents Park Open air theatre in June. A butterfly came and sat on my knee, the moved to the bar and watched the play for about 20 minutes and the went and sat on a mans hat for the rest of the play.

BalloonSlayer · 22/08/2019 07:36

I have seen more than usual this year (south east) ditto bees and, regrettably, wasps.

FiveLittlePigs · 22/08/2019 07:47

There are loads of butterflies in my garden, the buddleia is absolutely covered with them.

WildRosie · 22/08/2019 10:20

I've seen a handful of small tortoiseshells in my front garden but their normally vivid colours aren't especially bright. They look like their colours have faded.

LavenderAndBeeswax · 22/08/2019 14:29

What colour buddleia do you have FiveLittlePigs?

PeppermintSoda · 08/09/2019 13:21

Strange. I had none on my buddleia when this thread was going but now have lots. Maybe they are attracted to it when it's been in bloom for a while. I'm south of London

Ronsters · 08/09/2019 14:01

I'm getting a late glut of them, after not many up to a couple of weeks ago. Mainly Red Admirals and Peacocks, a few cabbage whites over the last week or so, they especially like my dahlias.
