Why is drag so popular now?

Genuine question. I have seen lots of posts on a Facebook this morning about attending some drag queen event. Mostly women and several bringing their teens ( both sexes)

It seems really popular but I have no idea why or what people going get out of it? Is it comedic or fashion or something else.

Either derailing or an unfortunate reading comprehension problem. Most likely the former, given the patient explanations by several others of what was meant in easily accessible terminology.

I can’t help thinking of centaurs when I see Billy Porter in that amazing dress.
As you were.

SittingAround1 · 20/08/2019 13:52

Just reached the end of the thread -that was long.
Anyway, yes I agree if men want to wear dresses, makeup and high heals then they should go ahead. The moment they start prentending to be women for laughs and taking the piss out of us then it becomes offensive.
There is always a fine line in comedy between offensive and funny. Drag crosses it for me.

howwudufeel · 20/08/2019 15:47

Propertyofhood are you a northern woman because I am and I see it every weekend.

0pheIiaBaIIs · 20/08/2019 16:20

@howwudufeel I'm a northern woman but I've lived all over the country. It's not just northern women who like to dress up on a Saturday, just as Essex women don't live up to the hackneyed stereotype mentioned earlier.

Can we get over ALL these stereotypes, please?

sackrifice · 20/08/2019 16:27

Men in drag has nothing whatsoever to do with women's sexuality, femininity or what they wear on a fucking night out.

howwudufeel · 20/08/2019 16:27

It isn’t a stereotype in the strictest sense. It is nothing that anyone should be ashamed or embarrassed about either.
I too have lived in different parts of the county and I have always found northern women like to let their hair down more than anywhere else I have ever lived.

BazzleJet · 20/08/2019 16:48

Which is nothing whatsoever to do with men parodying women Confused

sackrifice · 20/08/2019 16:57

Me too. And I still know that what women actually do and how they do it is nothing whatsoever to do with drag.

howwudufeel · 20/08/2019 17:16

They show their cleavage, wear their hair big, heels and a lot of make-up. Which is not a bad thing.

BertrandRussell · 20/08/2019 17:37

“They show their cleavage, wear their hair big, heels and a lot of make-up. Which is not a bad thing.“

No, it’s not a bad thing. Did anyone say it was? I remain confused. All I know is that none of the drag defenders have addressed the parody, mocking, denigrating narrative that runs through drag.

howwudufeel · 20/08/2019 17:40

I don’t feel mocked by drag queens. Clearly others agree with me.

0pheIiaBaIIs · 20/08/2019 18:05

@howwudufeel what has how women dress on a night out, wherever they are in the country, got to do with drag queens anyway?

This isn't about how women dress. It's about how men grotesquely parodying women dress. There's absolutely no connection between the two.

Jaxhog · 20/08/2019 18:11

Drag isn't denigrating femininity though...it's celebrating femininity.
Seriously? I find some drag vaguely funny, but I don't think it has anything to do with celebrating feminity! Or at least only a grotesque, exaggerated form. It's a form of entertainment, like clowns.

And comparing drag to blackface is quite valid. Uncomfortable maybe, but how is parodying women any better than parodying black people?

howwudufeel · 20/08/2019 18:25

My comments about how some women dress was in response to a post by Propertyofhood who said women are denigrated for wearing heels, big hair etc. I don’t see that where I live to be honest.

Propertyofhood · 20/08/2019 19:24

What are you on about?

My comments about how some women dress was in response to a post by Propertyofhood who said women are denigrated for wearing heels, big hair etc. I don’t see that where I live to be honest.

I have heard plenty of stereotyping insulting comments about women, from all over the country not just the North (Confused) and what they wear, how the look, how they act on a night out.

In fact, when a woman wears a lot of makeup, has big hair etc one of those rather ironic insults is that 'she looks like a man in drag'.

howwudufeel · 20/08/2019 19:32

What do you mean what am I on about? I notice that you and others say this a lot and whilst you obviously think it’s a great way to belittle other people it is rather boring.

0pheIiaBaIIs · 21/08/2019 10:42

Someone on Facebook was just talking about a contestant on RPDR called Cheryl Hole. Do the drag supporters here want to tell me how that name - or the way this person looks - isn't something women should be offended/outraged by? How does a man reducing women to our sexual organs celebrate femininity, precisely?

Why is drag so popular now?
howwudufeel · 21/08/2019 10:50

Not offended at all.

sackrifice · 21/08/2019 10:55

Cheryl Hole

C Hole. Not, not offensive in any way. Hmm

It's weird how so many take names that are in themselves slang for women's genitals.

Detroit68 · 21/08/2019 11:00

Autogynophilia.

Sissification. Sexual kicks.

They seem to hate women.

Cheryl Hole.

So totally celebrating women.

0pheIiaBaIIs · 21/08/2019 11:18

Not offended at all

Why not?

BertrandRussell · 21/08/2019 11:21

How can you not be offended by a drag queen called Cheryl Hole??
