Why is drag so popular now?

Nothingcomesforfree · 17/08/2019 09:43

Genuine question. I have seen lots of posts on a Facebook this morning about attending some drag queen event. Mostly women and several bringing their teens ( both sexes)

It seems really popular but I have no idea why or what people going get out of it? Is it comedic or fashion or something else.

Bertrand I am clearly too stupid to make myself understood so I don’t think there’s really much point trying again.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:47

One poster said drag should be banned?

OK.

That's not a whole bunch of posters calling for drag clubs to be banned is it.

If it's just one poster why not flag them at top of post rather than saying in general.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 10:47

i said i’d like to see drag banned but I know it’s not possible, so I’d like to see it gradually fading away by becoming more socially unacceptable. A bit like what happened to Frankie Boyle when he went one step too far....

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/08/2019 10:48

No you're not, give over - don't let yourself be shouted down, it's perfectly clear what you meant.
Think some are just trying to be obtuse.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:48

So I can say

Flip-flops have been banned
Women have been banned

And they are accurate statements in standard UK understanding

Ok

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/08/2019 10:50

It's word nitpicking to avoid the point.
Blackface has been banned from telly. There'd be outrage if the black and white minstrel show got re-run.
I don't think it's illegal as such, but it definitely wouldn't be tolerated on telly,

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:52

No it hasn't!

Words have meanings.

It has become socially unacceptable and that's why you don't see it much.

However you do still see it, as it has not been banned!

Bloody hell.

Ligresa · 19/08/2019 10:53

Yes in that case I'd like ru Pauls drag race banned

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:53

Oh I see you have now added 'on telly'

Cheeky.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:56

But, league of gentlemen?

And, when you say 'on telly' do you mean the 5 old school channels or all content available on TV in UK?

I mean whichever way you look at it, it's not 'been banned'.

What has happened is that society has said, this is not acceptable we don't want to see it any more. So it stopped. Bottom up.

Banning tends to apply to things that more people want to do. It's top down, preventative.

Words have meanings. Or at least they used to :/

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 10:58

“No you're not, give over - don't let yourself be shouted down, it's perfectly clear what you meant.”

It really isn’t. And I have no desire to shout anyone down. Can you have a go at explaining this banned/illegal issue?

0pheIiaBaIIs · 19/08/2019 11:00

Blackface has been banned from telly

No, it hasn't.

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/08/2019 11:01

It hasn't?
Er, try bringing it back then. See what reception it gets.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 11:01

Can someone tell me what we’re talking about?

0pheIiaBaIIs · 19/08/2019 11:06

@RosesAndRaindrops why are you labouring this point?

As I've said several times League of Gentlemen is still regularly shown on TV. It features very prominently a blackface character. Also repeats of 70s/80s comedies such as The Two Ronniea which feature blackface characters. And that's before you consider the non 'main' TV channels/streaming services.

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/08/2019 11:09

Yes in that case I'd like ru Pauls drag race banned

It won't though will it, as it isn't socially unacceptable enough even though you'd like it to be.
There's clearly a lot of women out there who like drag.
Or who don't see it as mocking.
It comes across as "it's offensive to all women, ban it!" erm no, it's clearly not, don't speak for us all.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 11:10

I think we have to argue about what the word banned means to avoid discussing why its awful to call women fish etc

Maybe we can return to point after this (Cambridge dictionary)

ban
verb [ T ] UK
/bæn/ US
-nn-

to say officially that something is not allowed, or that someone is not allowed to do something:

The law bans the import of ivory into the country.
ban sb/sth from doing sth A number of airlines were banned from operating to the UK.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 11:13

'It comes across as "it's offensive to all women, ban it!" erm no, it's clearly not, don't speak for us all.'

I see.

So all the stuff, so the arguments, all the stories, everything, 'comes across' like that does it.

Women whose Lesbian daughter was reduced to tears
Multiplie lesbians saying cunt/ fish is used regularly
Drag kids
All of it 'comes across' waaah ban it

Ok

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 11:18

I think you mean, that although only 1 poster said they would like it banned, but thought it unlikely / unworkable

You still take all the posters on the thread who don't like drag to want it banned as well.

But you said you didn't like the implication that anyone is trying to speak for others.

And yet you are saying that you read the words and all you hear is, ban it. Even when that's not said.

This is a really intetesting thread I've got to say.

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/08/2019 11:20

There might be old shows with an element of blackface still being shown on repeat but I'm not aware of any new shows featuring it being made. So we can watch and say well at least things have changed for the better as this would never get made now. The worst offenders (B&W Minstrel Show, Alf Garnett, It Ain't Half Hot Mum) have all gone.

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/08/2019 11:22

Not that Af Garnett features blackface, but racism generally.

howwudufeel · 19/08/2019 11:23

Black face breaches the rules set down by Ofcom. Therefore it is banned from being transmitted.

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/08/2019 11:25

Just one?
There's been another one since, it's clearly not just one. Ligresa wants Ru Pauls Drag race banned, presumably because she's offended and doesn't like it....
just two right there.
But nobody's saying they want it banned if it was possible.... erm OK.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 11:27

I said I would like it banned. And I would. But I know it’s impossible.

0pheIiaBaIIs · 19/08/2019 11:28

@RosesAndRaindrops I think it's awful that some women think it's 'acceptable' for teenage girls to be mocked about their sexuality/lack of 'femininity' by a man, just because he's grotesquely parodying a woman. Or that some women think that's an art form, or cool because it's a man 'expressing himself' when all he's expressing is misogyny. It's disheartening to see that there are women who feel that a man reducing a teenage girl who's just come out to tears in a crowded room in this way is just fine. Or that it's not offensive to women.

How can you support this?
