Why is drag so popular now?

Genuine question. I have seen lots of posts on a Facebook this morning about attending some drag queen event. Mostly women and several bringing their teens ( both sexes)

It seems really popular but I have no idea why or what people going get out of it? Is it comedic or fashion or something else.

Lol

It's not banned.

Banned, as far as I know, means you are not allowed to do it full stop anywhere. With a suggestion that if you do, there may be a punishment of some type.

Something becoming socially unacceptable does not mean it has been banned. But that usage does give some insight into why some types of people always say oh you want it banned, when someone says they don't like it.

My work says you aren't allowed to wear flip-flops. Lots of workplaces have that rule. Also fairground rides, horseriding centres, soft play etc etc. Lots of places won't allow flip-flops.

However the broad statement 'flip flops have been banned!' would be untrue.

Are you going to carry on flogging this point?

howwudufeel · 19/08/2019 10:12

Grin at flogging the point. Oh the irony.
It is banned, as I have pointed out. If you can’t accept that then fine.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:15

Blackface has not been banned in the uk, using the generally understood meaning of the word banned.

The issue here in is that you want to use words in a different way to how they are commonly understood in the uk.

Interesting.

By the way, women have been banned!!!!!

(from some private gentlemen's clubs in London)

sackrifice · 19/08/2019 10:17

A folk society doesn't have the power of arrest does it?

Crikey.

howwudufeel · 19/08/2019 10:18

You don’t understand the difference between banned and illegal...

Ligresa · 19/08/2019 10:20

I'm not sure banned means what you think it means Confused

Ligresa · 19/08/2019 10:22

If you mean "can individual organisations ban blackface?" then yes they can. But your original question was if drag was banned how do we police men wearing make up? Which suggests you thought banned meant a nationwide ban. As in the hunting ban, this would make something illegal.

howwudufeel · 19/08/2019 10:22

Is that to me Ligresa?

sackrifice · 19/08/2019 10:25

I'd love it if men who beat women up, raped or murdered them were arrested and jailed, let alone those parodying them in a grotesque fashion for money.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 10:27

I’ve lost track of this thread. I no longer know what we’re talking about.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 10:29

If I had a venue, I could ban drag acts. That does not mean they are universally banned or illegal.

howwudufeel · 19/08/2019 10:30

I can grasp that Betrand.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 10:31

So what are you saying?

howwudufeel · 19/08/2019 10:32

That’s a good point sackrifice.
I see lap dancing clubs in my city and I would like to see them disappear. That’s why I can’t understand why the focus is on drag clubs.

howwudufeel · 19/08/2019 10:32

Betrand a poster said drag isn’t banned. I said it is and gave an example of a place where it is banned.

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/08/2019 10:35

Of course black face is (rightfully) banned from telly.
Can you imagine if they re-ran the Black and White Minstrel Show now?!
It'd never happen.

0pheIiaBaIIs · 19/08/2019 10:38

@RosesAndRaindrops but they re-run League of Gentlemen, as I've already said. So it isn't 'banned' entirely, unfortunately.

Hopefully one day men taking the piss out of women will be just as socially unacceptable as white people taking the piss out of POC.

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:39

This thread is not calling for drag clubs to be banned.

Hth.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 10:39

I would love to see lap dancing clubs made illegal. Shall we start another thread about that, or shall we continue to deflect from the mockery and denigration of women in drag by bringing in irrelevancies?

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:40

This thread asked the question why so popular all of a sudden.

Some people said they like it.
Some people said they don't.

How the leap to Banning drag clubs?
Is this what's called a straw man?

Fraggling · 19/08/2019 10:41

I'd love to see lap dancing clubs banned as well, more than happy to contribute to another thread.

They have done it in Iceland!

(note, this is not the equivalent of a global ban 🙄)

howwudufeel · 19/08/2019 10:43

I am the one who understands the difference between banned and illegal but continue to mock me if it makes you all feel better Smile

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/08/2019 10:44

This thread is not calling for drag clubs to be banned.

Hth.

Poster upthread said they wanted it banned.
Why should we not discuss whether we think banning a form of entertainment because somebody took offence is the right way to go?
Where do you stop?
A lot of comedians would fall under the "I'm offended" banner if we started doing that.
Frankie Boyle
Ricky Gervais
etc

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 10:45

@howwudufeel can you explain then? Because I don’t understand what you’re saying. I’d be grateful if you’d have another go.

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/08/2019 10:45

I'd certainly like to see it become socially unacceptable.
