Rewind back to 2002...

Reminiscing really... what would you have been doing on this Friday night in 2002?

I have just settled down with a glass of wine and some Doritos. DS(6) watching something I don’t fully understand on Cbeebies.

Got me thinking of what I would have been doing on a summer Friday night in 2002 aged 19.

I had my own little flat, and my friends would come to mine and we would get ready for a night at the local pubs. We would probably have had our “Blue” album on, dressing up in two-tone trousers, handkerchief type halterneck tops, and patent black wedges.

Make up was super-thin “sperm” eyebrows, thick, dark lipliner with a pale lipstick on lips, and glitter eyeshadow. Hair was trendy bleached blonde with dark, dark brown dyed underneath (urghh!)

We would go out with about a fiver, and because our school and college friends worked behind the bars, we would get loads of freebies, get wasted, and still come home with change.

2002 was a great yearGrin

I was a student nurse aged 25 living in a room in hospital accommodation.

If I wasn't working I would have been drinking & on my way out with my mates to a bar for some cocktails & wine followed by our favourite club playing trance downstairs & drum n bass upstairs for all night dancing...

I would probably have pulled one or two fit guys too. Ha. Those were the days.

gingercat02 · 09/08/2019 20:40

It was 3 weeks before my wedding so probably panicking a bit

tierraJ · 09/08/2019 20:42

I remember I wore bootcut jeans, heels & cami type tops not a lot different from now except the jeans I wear now are skinny.
I still like trance & drum n bass.

I met my now dh 6 months previously so I was probably out with him. However, if Big Brother was on at that time of year, me and my best mate would have been in front of the tv with wine and/or blue WKD!

Poota · 09/08/2019 20:47

I had a one year old and was living in a house with a hedge around it that we kept finding used needles in, so we were house hunting!!

JudgeRindersMinder · 09/08/2019 20:49

Dad who has just turned 5 would have been in bed at 7:30 and would have been constantly feeding ds who was about 9 weeks old, waiting for Friends to come on at 9

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/08/2019 20:49

@HeyMonkey! Yes!!! All my clothes had hot rock burns in them!

WizardOfAus · 09/08/2019 20:50

17 years old... going to whoever from school was throwing a party. Miss 2002 so much.

AnneBoleynsHead · 09/08/2019 20:50

My Dad died in June 2002. Not a good year for me.

CakeNinja · 09/08/2019 20:51

Pulling pints behind the bar, dressed in something I wouldn’t dare contemplate now including sky high heels. Another one with ridiculously skinny eyebrows, some frosty lipstick, thick dark eyeliner and a posh spice inspired pixie cut hairstyle. Nice Grin
Then going out drinking afterwards, to the club down the road. Smoking in the club with sticky carpets Grin
Those were the days, 18 and carefree.
Met dp while I worked in the pub, now have 3dc and are relatively more sensible now than we were then! We are all at home right now, I’ve just bleached a shirt of his and he’s cooking me a steak dinner. Rock and roll!!

HeyMonkey · 09/08/2019 20:52

Do you have hot rock scars? I have one still very prominent to the side of my left nipple.

That was from a house party where we burned holes in my friends mums Persian rug and tried to hand sew the holes together the next morning. Fond memories.

Is hash even still a thing?

NoodlingAlong · 09/08/2019 20:55

I spent the summer of 2002 working in Sarajevo. On a Friday night I would have been drinking vodka and tonic in a bar in town with my friend, Vanja. I miss her Sad.

Ginderella11 · 09/08/2019 21:07

Ahh yes, the “fag burned” clothes. Many a time I was burnt by someone’s stray cig on the dancefloor!

I was usually the one burning people

Friday night with a four year old and a 9 year old. DH would have taken the 9 year old to Kung Fu class and I’d be making a pasta dish. Then wine and a film with DH after they’d gone to bed.

doctorboo · 09/08/2019 21:14

OP were you born in ‘82 or 83?

I’d have been 19 in feb ‘02 and would have been out with my boyfriend of 5ish months, enjoying the fact that we both had money left over after paying our parents rent and we’d have been in the local pub, a restaurant or the cinema.

Now our Friday nights are spent watching something easy on Amazon or Netflix and trying to stay awake until 9.30pm - our children are high energy and the youngest doesn’t sleep through the night!

doctorboo · 09/08/2019 21:18

It’s close to my bedtime and I can’t read properly, I’d still have been doing the same things though, looking after my newborn niece would have featured quite heavily as we often babysat while she socialised.

Ikeameatballs · 09/08/2019 21:20

I was working as a junior doctor. I often used to cry on Friday nights as I drove to a week of night shift as everyone else got ready to go out.

Summerunderway · 09/08/2019 21:21

Can I make my post 2001? Went to bed at 10, woke at 1030pm in full labour. Had ds at 1230am in hospital fully clothed!!
Ds is 18 tomorrow!!

TheRLodger · 09/08/2019 21:21

Most Friday evenings in 2002 i went to guides. But it would have been the summer holidays so probably been to the pub and catching up with my dad who had been away at work all week

HeyMonkey · 09/08/2019 21:26

I feel old and boring now.

I might go out to the play park over the road and ask the shady lads that hang out there where one might procure some hash these days. Wonder if they'd speak to me or leg it.

I'm wearing fluffy slippers and a turban on my intensive hair treatment.

Longdistance · 09/08/2019 21:28

I had my own house, career, money and flash car. No children. Having an absolute ball with my friends or work colleagues in another country getting drunk and exploring lots of cities.

Can we rewind permanently please?

Julykthat · 09/08/2019 21:32

I was about 19....months pregnant with DD (now almost 17) so working, and excited about the unknown excitement ahead. I am so glad I did not have a crystal ball!

PrivateIsles · 09/08/2019 21:38

2002 wasn't a good year for me at all. I was doing a crappy job I hated with a horrible boss who paid me by cheque and even that was never given to me on time Hmm, so I was always going over my overdraft limit, living in a nightmare shared house in London and generally not enjoying life much.

Then 2003 came along and rocked my world! Why didn't you ask about that year OP?! Grin

CakeNinja · 09/08/2019 21:57

Well now dp and I are being snippy with each other because we are going away tomorrow and have left everything to the last minute (like we always do, the pair of us, it’s not like one of us has pulled all their weight and not the other). He is pointing out how much we have left to do while drinking wine (he is cooking aswell to be fair) while I have spent the day with the 3dc, going out shopping and finding an outfit, buying a card for the wedding we are going to tomorrow, getting currency for the present, oh ffs I could go on but you get the picture, it’s been an equal split.
He’s now letting me know all the things we still have left to do before we leave the house at 7am. I’m sitting having a drink after being busy all evening.
Maybe we haven’t really grown up in all these years after all Grin
Take me back to 2002!!

Janderson · 09/08/2019 22:00

My firstborn was exactly 3 months old on this day in 2002. So I suppose I would still have been staring at my PFB in complete awe Grin. The subsequent ones never merited this degree of attention/devotion. Grin
