Why would you choose to change your name to husband's if it was...

Cock. Sitting in the doctor's surgery earlier, Mrs (first name) Cock appeared on the board and I couldn't help wondering why you would willingly change your name to it or similar when you have the choice to keep your own name. Would you?

@PannacottaLotta don't you realise that you should never change to your husband's name? No matter the circumstances, you must keep a name you are unhappy with (even if it provokes dreadful feelings for you), to prove that you are not under your husband's control. Because, apparently, making the decision for yourself isn't quite enough.

BenWillbondsPants · 06/08/2019 08:58

You certain did @hopewardrobe.Grin

We knee a guy called Dick Bell. He really suited his name.

SilverySurfer · 06/08/2019 09:19

I used to know a De'ath - always pronounced Dee ath.

I know a Dr De'ath. His wife and children have her surname.

LowbrowVictoriana · 06/08/2019 10:04

Cockburn is pronounced “Coburn”, though.

I knew a Mrs Smellie!
Also someone who married a man whose surname was the same as her first name, and she still changed her name!
She became (something like) Clare Clare.

carrotsandchocolate · 06/08/2019 10:12

Haha this has made me smile, I'd also love to be Mrs Turtle!

I did know a Mr and Mrs Butt - worked in a school, and a Mrs and Mrs Jolly which I thought was cute.

The mayor of Cardiff is called Dan De'Ath - seems to be more common than I thought!

MorrisZapp · 06/08/2019 10:14

Dick, Smellie and Hoare are fairly regular Scottish surnames. Dick doesn't raise much of a titter round here, in fact we had a Mr and a Mrs Dick at our school - not related - and I don't remember making a joke of it.

Lol at the anglicisation of women's names though. Ooh, my foreign surname is a pain to spell out to people so I'll change it to my partner's name, said no man on the face of the earth.

amusedbush · 06/08/2019 10:15

Cockburn is pronounced “Coburn”, though.

Yep, there is a "co-burn street" (Cockburn Street) in Edinburgh, and I've only ever heard it pronounced "co-burn".

Although I know a Mrs Smellie who insists her name is pronounced "smily" Grin

StarlingsInSummer · 06/08/2019 10:24

I double-barrelled. DS was born before we got married and we gave him DP's (now DH) last name because at that time, I fully intended to change my name when we married (we were already engaged). But the closer it came to the wedding, the more I thought I'd prefer to keep my own name - but I didn't want a different last name to my DS. So double-barrelling was a good compromise.

bumblingbovine49 · 06/08/2019 10:24

Inkpen is my favourite unusual surname

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/08/2019 10:30

Just remembered that my primary school head teacher was Mr Jelley!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 06/08/2019 10:59

@Tartyflette I know a Mrs Warnke, who is a teacher. Dutch, apparently.

Damntheman · 06/08/2019 11:43

I know a guy here whose name directly translate to 'stiff cock' in the local language. He refuses to change his name, much as his wife begs him to take hers :D

Gojojogogogo · 06/08/2019 11:58

I had a customer called Willy Touchet the other week Grin

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/08/2019 12:09

Yes to Cockburn always being pronounced Coburn.

Years ago I worked in a supermarket, this was when people paid by cheque and you had to check their signature against the one on their card. One day a customer handed me a cheque, having signed it Jane Bastard. I remember staring at it in disbelief for several seconds before looking at the printed name and seeing to my relief that it was actually Basford.

carrotsandchocolate · 07/08/2019 09:12

Oh, also, my brother's housemate in uni. He's Chinese, and his name is Yu Wang. Fine in Chinese, hilarious in English! Poor guy didn't have too easy a time of it in uni...

Sole is not the best surname if your first name begins with a R. A former neighbour had than problem. Mrs. R. Sole.
