Why would you choose to change your name to husband's if it was...

Cock. Sitting in the doctor's surgery earlier, Mrs (first name) Cock appeared on the board and I couldn't help wondering why you would willingly change your name to it or similar when you have the choice to keep your own name. Would you?

My great uncle changed his name for his wife's when they married. His surname was OK but he was obviously conscious that it was also an illness

I went to primary school with a family of Dicks. Once during assembly the headteacher was handing out prizes and called up Jane Dick to collect hers- a ripple of laughter sounded out from the 200 8-11 year olds as she walked up towards him.

Headteacher was very angry on Jane’s behalf and started a red faced rant on being respectful towards others and their names.

Then he realised that we weren’t laughing at the Dicks- we’d been at school with them for years, we were used to their name- there was a small boy behind him who had put his hymn book on his head and was doing the dance to Saturday Night (it was the 90s).

The Head was mortified and poor Jane stood there fuming that he’d just reminded half the school that she had a really embarassing surname.

I was more than happy to get rid of my abusive, narcissistic, alcoholic step fathers surname when I married my wonderful, kind and loving husband. I don't see why thats so difficult for some women to comprehend.

Many years ago when I first started teaching in the 70’s I came across a health professional involved in giving talks to young teenagers about contraception. Her name was Mrs Stiff

Knittingnanny · 06/08/2019 00:23

Also worked with a young teacher called Miss Crapper

Almost certainly apocryphal, but a couple in my town allegedly; Everard and Ophelia Dick.

And how about the union between Gerald Fitzherbert and Herbert Fitzgerald?

PickAChew · 06/08/2019 00:33

Probably because she thought it was rather hilarious.

I despair that Cockfield was out of our house hunting area. Would have been great on a postal address.

Koch is German for Cook.

I always wonder about Cressida Dick and Ed Balls (why would anyone in the public eye keep those names?)

FlotSHAMnJetson · 06/08/2019 08:06

Because it was better for Miss Sucker not to hyphenate.

LeslieYep · 06/08/2019 08:13

My friends dsis changed her surname to Kunk when she married, which we thought a little close to the bone...

I also briefly dated a guy whose Surname was Drane.

RustyBear · 06/08/2019 08:23

My dad once had to introduce Mr Dippy to Mr Batty.

One thing about the tradition of changing your name on marriage having existed for so long is that it does make it much easier to trace your family tree.

seeyounexttime · 06/08/2019 08:26

The worst surname I've come across was Raper. I couldn't understand an adult having that name and not having changed it.
