Why would you choose to change your name to husband's if it was...

Cock. Sitting in the doctor's surgery earlier, Mrs (first name) Cock appeared on the board and I couldn't help wondering why you would willingly change your name to it or similar when you have the choice to keep your own name. Would you?

Oh that’s horrible SomethingAboutNothing - it’s an awful name anyway (really up there with the worst names I think) but in that profession too?

I like to think most men would be happy to get rid of that name by giving their children the mother’s name... but I guess not.
How does a name like that even come into being anyway?

SilverySurfer · 05/08/2019 17:20

Some of these are amazing. Grin

A woman taking her husband's name presumably came about in the olden days when it was effectively the father handing over ownership of his daughter to the husband. Lots of women now keep their own name and their children have a double-barrelled name. I wonder what happens when one of them marries someone who also has a double barrel? Do they each drop one name, if so I can see it causing some upset for the parent whose name has been dropped.

This thread has really made me laugh, thanks op! Not as funny as these but I know a family of Loonys, they called their dog nutty!

I know a lady whose name is Mrs A Payne - and she really is! 😂 She’s a bit like Hyacinth Bucket... 🤣

longearedbat · 05/08/2019 18:33

I didn't want my husbands surname - I kept my own, and told him why. I really didn't want to be known as Mrs Thatcher.

BenWillbondsPants · 05/08/2019 18:40

I don't really know why it would piss anyone else off of I chose to change my surname to my husband's or not. I didn't, incidentally, I kept my own, but it's got fuck all to do with anyone else.

To be honest, my DH having a comedy surname is about only thing that might've induced me to take it. I'd take a perverse pleasure in going through life as Ms Cockhead.

CanoeDoYouThinkYouAre · 05/08/2019 20:03

My brother once went out with a girl who's surname was Brownsword.

She was adamant that she would change it on marriage. Things didn't work out with my brother but I later found out that she married a Mr Smith. I can't help but wonder if his name was the main attraction!

I came across a Ms Sithole today which I thought is quite unfortunate ...

Sorry for the double post!

Hmm, I think I’d be tempted to ask DH to change his name too (maybe to cook or something like that) - otherwise I wouldn’t!

NaToth · 05/08/2019 21:50

I can confirm the existence of Mrs Kill the Nurse!

One of our local tradesmen is Mr Smallcock!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/08/2019 21:52

I love a comedy surname. It was one of the many things that attracted me to DH Grin

CanoeDoYouThinkYouAre · 05/08/2019 22:18

DH worked with a woman who married a Mr Turtle. I was incredibly disappointed that she kept her (far less comedy) maiden name.
I'd have loved to be Mrs Turtle.

OMGshefoundmeout · 05/08/2019 22:24

I took my husband’s name because his family is much nicer than mine and I would rather be associated with them than my own relations.

SilverySurfer · 05/08/2019 22:26

Don't suppose you want to share LadyMonicaBaddingham? Grin

Some of these names are amazing.

Having read several threads from women whose MiLs were horrified at them keeping their own name and refusing to address them as such, I've often wondered if it would be a good idea for both bride and groom to choose a new last name when they get married.

It wouldn't bother me. I think unusual names are quirky and if you can carry them off even better. I have known a few people who told me they hated their surnames but I really didn't get it. The names were Pratt and Alcock. To me they were just names, not that bad! And I know one girl, a teacher, who married a man with a fab surname but chose to keep her family name of Higginbottom. She loved her name. I always said I would change my name only for an upgrade. My married name is really nice, but I have nothing against most of the ones mentioned on this thread.
I wouldn't take Thatcher or Stillborn though.

LatteLove · 05/08/2019 22:28

No I wouldn’t become Mrs Cock! That’s awful.

My sister once had a client called Mrs De’Ath. Written across her file in massive letters was “DO NOT CALL HER MRS DEATH”

BizzzzyBee · 05/08/2019 22:30

I once met a Cockburn. I was calling people in to interview and I got as far as Mr Cock... before the guy leapt up and went “It’s Co-burn”. Nope, he can pretend all he wants but it’s clearly spelled Cock.

Echobelly · 05/08/2019 22:31

My cousin (ordinary, pleasant surname) got married to a women with a surname that sounds like a rather insulting adjective, and I'll be she couldn't wait to take his surname!
