What's your favourite UK seaside town?

Looking for somewhere for a traditional seaside holiday.

I'd like a nice, safe, sandy beach.
Water warm enough to swim (or at least wade) in.
A few shops, cafes, fish and chips and ice cream within walking distance.
Don't really want nightlife, arcades etc.
What's your favourite?

Ballycastle Grin Lovely independent shops, amazing fish and chips, beautiful beach, great kids area, fantastic scenery, friendly people and some great pubs with live traditional music. I love it.

As a local, the best thing about Barry Island (even though Whitmore Bay is cracking) are all the other bits of coast around that people don't know about. You can park by the local rubbish tip and not know there's a flat beach in front that runs for miles in either direction. We have some amazing beaches around us that can be completely deserted. We also have some of the best parks around.

Gorleston-on-Sea - I swim in the sea there and it's the beach featured in the film Yesterday...

Ursaminor · 03/08/2019 20:13

I see Cullen and Findhorn get a mention - I raise you Hopeman (also on the Moray coast). Has two lovely beaches, a couple of shops, ice cream, a couple of take aways and a lovely caravan park:

@BigSandyBalls2015 has Bognor changed for the better or worse? I haven't been there in years...

Flashesofrage · 03/08/2019 20:24

Honestly, do a day visit to Tenby but actually stay in Amroth or Saundersfoot.

IceniSky · 03/08/2019 20:24

How I miss Southwold. Went every year for 12 years, but alas last year was the last after a family death.

Best times of my life there. We would arrive and I'd feel the stress lift. I preferred the end near the harbour. Glorious.

Freaking0ut · 03/08/2019 20:26

No one has mentioned my seaside town, not too far from Tenby Grin

I adore St Ives (happy memories of loved up times with my husband pre kids), but we went last summer and it was so so sooooo busy. The beaches were rammed and antisocial (everyone putting up wind breaks, blocking others off), the restaurants were full and we didn’t even bother trying to walk down the Main Street as it was so chocca. Go in the Autumn or Winter and it’s 👌

PancakeAndKeith · 03/08/2019 20:28

I lived in Scarborough for a while.
I loved it. You’ve got the South Bay for the arcades and sticks of rock and the north bay for just sea.

AdaColeman · 03/08/2019 20:31

Barmouth or Aberystwyth

Tynemouth is tops though! Grin

Pipandmum · 03/08/2019 20:34

Ryde on the Isle if Wight. Vast beach, couple nice cafes/ice cream places on it, plenty of restaurants/cafes/shops in town, parks, little amusement park (dodge ems, penny arcade, pirate ship, Helter skelter), trampolines, free live music Monday nights...

HairyToity · 03/08/2019 20:35

We had a lovely holiday once in North Berwick.

Bloodycats · 03/08/2019 20:42

Another vote for saltburn! It does get busy but it has a big stretch of sand, or you can hire a hut if you get in early. The arcade is a small building and not overpowering.
It’s a gorgeous town.
